Since it seems I’ll never see a fire again as they have been virtually eliminated here in Chicago I got sentimental and wanted to share some classic old images I came across….

The first is a rare shot of a smoke ejector working .. this is way before the recent rebuilds … you can see the smoke issuing from the top of the unit where the fan discharge is …

Next one is squad 2 … (not FMS 2) but they were reusing the old squad rigs when we had a squad in each district and they only had a few of the Ford Welch units

A shot of truck 25 setting up a ladder pipe … can’t recall the location but I seem to remember it being a Chinese restaurant of some kind

Niles Truck 440 … this was in the 6300 block of Touhy, and ironically enough I took this photo standing on the front lawn of the house I would eventually buy …

Elk Grove Village, classic tiller .. gotta love a Mack Pirsch anything!!

Niles, IL buggy … I always liked the two Borealis lights, but these were the newer model, not the old classics we are all thinking of … cool none the less

The 6600 Bl of Monticello today…looks like a good coupla rooms on the 2nd floor…but was way past out when I arrived….a good operation all around from what I could see…I did see a member get moved into the Skokie ambo…didn’t appear serious but I don’t know if he was transported or not. Finally got some shots of the new Evanston truck, and some shots of the Skokie tower post rebuild. The Skokie truck had a real good spot at the mouth of the alley…rig positioned very well for ladder and equipment access.

Cicero Fire Department Dollar Store fire 7-31-12

The Cicero Fire Department requested a Box Alarm in the overnight hours of Tuesday, July 31st. Steve Redick took in the fire and submitted images with the following information:

1800 S Cicero Ave..early am..Dollar Store

This fire was held in check by sprinklers…high humidity kept the smoke conditions very low and as a result good photos were very difficult to get. I’m told a wall was breached in the large vacant commercial that made up sector 4 attached..I believe it was for inspection purposes..

The division 10 MVU was requested but as fate would have it it was oos..

New area apparatus orders

Several fire departments in the area have placed orders for new apparatus.

From Marion:

Elk Grove Township – rescue pumper; Spartan Metro Star chassis with a 10-inch raised roof, extrication reels in the front bumper, a 1,500-GPM pump, 750 gallons of water and 50 gallons of foam (due February 2012)

From Pierce:

Bristol-Kendal FPD – Contender engine on a Saber chassis
Chicago Ridge – Saber engine
Evanston – Arrow XT 100′ TDA
Homewood – Arrow XT 105′ rear mount aerial ladder
Lincolnshire Riverwoods FPD – Arrow XT 105′ rear mount aerial ladder quint
Lincolnwood – Arrow XT 100′ rear mount platform aerial
West Chicago FPD – Impel engine

New apparatus coming to Evanston

It’s been several years since the Evanston Fire Department has replaced apparatus and now with the help of a grant and a donation from Northwestern University they are getting a new engine and a new tractor-drawn aerial (TDA). The engine was ordered from Pierce on an Arrow XT chassis with a 1500 GPM 2-stage pump a 500-gallon water tank. This will go to Engine 23 on Central Avenue. Engine 23’s rig will replace Engine 325 as a reserve piece. The new engine which is due in early September is a donation from the university. In recognition of the donation, there will be a plaque on the pump panel and a ‘Wildcat’ (the NU mascot) painted on the grille.

Evanston received a grant for a new TDA and they are in the process of going to bid on a 100′ TDA with independent suspension for both the tractor and trailer. This will replace Truck 22. The fire department is also hoping to get the go-ahead from the city to purchase a new tractor for their other TDA, Truck 23.

The last of the new apparatus orders is for a new ambulance. Reported to be on an International chassis, the new ambulance will be built by Medtec.
