New ambulance in Morton Grove

Several months ago, the Morton Grove Fire Department placed a new ambulance into service out of Station 4. It is a 2011 Medtec Type I on an IHC 4300 chassis. This new addition shuffled a few units in the fleet. The previous Ambulance 4, a 1998 IHC 4700/Road Rescue became the reserve (Ambulance 4R) and a 1997 IHC 4700/Road Rescue which had been the reserve was taken out of service.

Ambulance 4 is similar to Ambulance 5 which is a 2006 IHC 4300/Medtec with a different lighting package.

The apparatus at both Morton Grove stations has been updated on the site to reflect the current fleet in its entirety.

Crete Township FPD has been added to the site

Crete Township Fire Protection District Station

The Crete Township Fire Protection in MABAS Division 27has three stations. They have a variety of engines made my Pierce, E-ONE, Luverne, and Alexis. The ambulances are from Medtec and they also have three tankers (tenders), the newest of which was completed in 2011 by Alexis on a Freightliner M2 chassis.

In 1995, Crete Township was one of several south suburban fire departments to order an engine from Luverne on an HME 1871 chassis. Two of these had the largest extended and raised cabs that were offered; one went to Alsip and the other is still on the roster for Crete Township with a fully enclosed pump operator panel.

The newest unit in the Crete Township fleet is a 3,000-gallon tender built by Alexis on a Freightliner chassis. There is a graphic on the porta-tank cover which illustrates a steamer that was refurbished by Gene Morris of Alexis Fire Equipment.

Hillside has been added to the site

In MABAS Division 20, the Hillside Fire Department has been added to the site. Hillside operates out of one station at 523 N. Wolf Road, and they house two ambulances, two engines, a truck company, and a light-duty rescue. Apparatus is a mixture of Road Rescue, Medtec, Pierce, American LaFrance, KME, and Grumman. Any day now the Grumman will be retired and replaced with a new Pierce quint as seen HERE.

Addison listings updated

Several updates have been made to the listings for the Addison Fire District in MABAS Division 12.

For Addison Station 1:

an image of the station has been added
new images with the specifications have been added for Battalion 106, Medic 110, and Engine 111
Engine 112, the 1990 Pierce Arrow reserve unit has been moved to Station1

FDIC 2011 highlights

The 2011 Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) just ended. The convention center was filled with exhibitors who displayed everything from fire apparatus and gear to shirts and trinkets. There were two local area rigs on display this year. A Medtec Type III ambulance for Algonquin-Lake in the Hills was in the Pierce booth and a Cyclone II 95-foot rear mount tower ladder for University Park was in the E-ONE booth.

Other interesting apparatus displayed included four pieces for the FDNY including a Wheeled Coach ambulance on a four-door Ford chassis, an engine in the Seagrave booth, plus Rescue 4 and Ladder 137 in the Ferrara booth.

Crimson had a tandem axle rescue for Elizabeth, NJ, KME had a tiller for Norwalk, CT, American LaFrance had a tiller for Ventura County, CA and HME had a Type III wildland pumper for CALFIRE.

Crimson highlighted their new acquisition of Classic Fire and showed their ‘Transformer’ on a commercial chassis;

American LaFrance announced that they are now offering their Eagle custom chassis to other manufacturers and that the LTI aerials can also be purchased by others;

Western Springs is added to the site

Another department in MABAS Division 10 has been added to the site. The Western Springs Fire Department currently has one station at 4353 Wolf Road. Station 2 is under construction at 5501 Grand Avenue. The apparatus consists of two Medtec ambulances, three engines, a truck, and a command car. Staffing is a combination of full-time, contract, part-time, and POC personnel. Currently the apparatus is painted white over red although past vehicles, which will be displayed in the historic photo gallery, were all white. Images of the current fleet were supplied by Bill Friedrich.

Larry here is some new news. The station faces West and has non drive thru apparatus bays. The station is scheduled to open in the Summer of 2011. I am sure there will be a engine and ambulance assigned to this house. They may also store the two antiques down here. I will be scanning more of the historical Western Springs apparatus negatives.

East Dundee FPD is added to the site

In MABAS Division 2 which incorporates Kane County, The East Dundee Fire Protection District has been added to the site. Bill Friedrich submitted the images to create the page for the current department. Their fire suppression apparatus is all by Alexis and their ambulances are from Medtec. Two of their current suppression units are on HME 1871 series chassis and the pumper/squad was built on an American LaFrance Eagle chassis.

In addition, Bill also submitted his images representing East Dundee’s past apparatus. These were combined with submissions from Larry Shapiro to build the East Dundee historic gallery that features several images including a 1934 antique.

Libertyville orders new ambulance

An article from the Trib Local last month mentions a new ambulance purchase for Libertyville. According to the article, they have ordered a Type III unit from Medtec to match the others that are in the Libertyville fleet.

Lake Zurich has been added to the site

Lake Zurich has now been added to the departments in MABAS Division 4. They have four stations of which one is in Deer Park and another is in North Barrington. This is a 100% Pierce department for suppression apparatus with four Saber engines, a Dash tower ladder, and a squad with a commercial IHC 4400 chassis. The ambulances are a mixture of Road Rescue and Medtec Type I units on IHC chassis.

The four engines are virtually identical though they span being built between 1997-2002. All but one carry 1,000 gallons of water and have foam tanks. The downtown engine has 750 gallons of water on board.

Grayslake has been added to MABAS Division 4

The Grayslake Fire Protection District covers 25 square miles in the heart of Lake County. They currently run out of two stations and expect to break ground for Station 3 in the spring of 2011. The new station will be on Peterson Road just east of Route 60. Grayslake has a combination of full-time, part-time and contract personnel. Although their truck and two engines are from Pierce, the newest engine is a 2009 Seagrave Maurauder II top-mount which has been featured HERE, and HERE.

Ambulances in Grayslake are a mixture of Road Rescue and Medtec and they have a tanker on an R-Model Mack chassis which was featured at a fire in Waukegan HERE.
