Fire service news
Feb 29
Excerpts from news.wttw.com:
“The Black Fire Brigade is the first of its kind in this country,” said co-founder Quention Curtis, a 32-year veteran of the Fire Department. “It was built around getting young people off the street away from gun violence, and things of that nature, and so our motto became: ‘If you teach a kid to save a life they’ll be less likely to take a life.’”
The Chicago-based nonprofit is also working to increase the ranks of African American firefighters, EMTs and paramedics. The Chicago Fire Department has long been overwhelmingly white – and has paid out millions in racial discrimination lawsuits. Today the force is still just 17% black and 16% Hispanic.
All of the students in the program are between the ages of 18 and 30. They get their primary EMT training at area schools or ambulance companies, but the Black Fire Brigade helps them every step of the way, with tuition for those programs if needed, additional training like the gunshot scenario we described, test prep, and job placement. Most EMT students plan to become paramedics and firefighters, and the Black Fire Brigade offers similar support and training for those careers.
The Black Fire Brigade started in June 2018 and in the first 18 months put more than 250 people through the program, including 60 single moms and three homeless students. They are 100% volunteer run and supported by donations.
Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
Elk Grove Village Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations and Administration Lance Harris will replace retiring West Dundee Chief Randy Freise, who has held the post since 2012. Harris’ first day will be April 20, two weeks before Freise’s official retirement. The overlap is intended to facilitate a solid and seamless transition. Harris will be the fourth chief in the West Dundee Fire Department’s 40-year history.
Harris started as an Elk Grove firefighter and paramedic more than 24 years ago and worked his way through the ranks to lieutenant, battalion chief, and then deputy chief in 2014.
When Freise initially announced his retirement in August 2018, West Dundee began pursuing a deal that would have Rutland-Dundee Fire Chief Richard Thomas take over the leadership of both departments. Freise agreed to stay on until negotiations were finalized, but before a joint fire management services agreement was reached, Rutland-Dundee officials informed West Dundee last September that they were no longer interested in the shared chief option, primarily out of concern that Thomas would be spread too thin.

Rubbish fire in Chicago

This from Tim Olk:
Chicago FD rubbish at Arthington and Cicero
Excerpts from the rrstar.com:
Five people were rescued from their burning home early Wednesday morning on Rockford’s south side after firefighters responded at about 1 a.m. to 1724 Lyran Ave. Firefighters rescued a 49-year-old woman who was unable to evacuate. She was transported with serious injuries.
A man who lives at the home grabbed a ladder from the garage and rescued his wife and three children from the burning home before firefighters arrived. The woman and three children were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
More from the wifr.com:
According to the Rockford Fire Department Donovin G. Fluaitt, 29, faces five counts of aggravated arson, a Class X Felony stemming from a house fire in his own home.
At 1 a.m. February 26 the Rockford Fire Department went to a home on 1725 Lyran Avenue for a fire. Several people were trapped inside. Initial reports were that Fluaitt grabbed a ladder and rescued his family members trapped on the second floor. Another person inside needed to be rescued by firefighters
Investigators determined the fire was intentionally started.
As seen around … Mundelein

This is something of interest. The location of this new museum is Truck 33’s old firehouse on Marshfield.
Excerpts from meetup.com:
For the past few years, a group of Chicago history enthusiasts have been working on creating a museum to commemorate the heritage of the Chicago Stockyards area in a former packinghouse. The Packingtown Museum will host its official grand opening on March 28th from 3-6PM. The Packingtown Museum is housed at The Plant, a former meatpacking facility that is being repurposed as a collaborative community of food businesses committed to material re-use and closed-loop systems.
This facility is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and presenting the industrial history and cultural heritage of Chicago’s Union Stock Yard and its surrounding neighborhoods. Through a combination of exhibits and educational programming, the museum strives to connect Chicago’s industrial past to its future and inform contemporary conversations about labor, immigration, food production, community development, and the economy.
The story of the development of the Union Stock Yards, the people who worked in them, and the neighborhoods that grew up around it includes chapters on organized labor, the role of immigration in fueling the growth of city and economy, and the changing relationship between people, machines, and food. All of these historical themes are relevant to the political and social dynamics of Chicago and the United States today. Through a better understanding of and appreciation for this 150-year history, we can be more engaged and thoughtful participants in the present and future that is unfolding right in front of us at The Plant.
