Chicago Still & Box Alarm 11-24-13

This from Eric Haak:

At 1412hrs on Sunday, November 24th, companies on Chicago’s south side were dispatched to a report of a structure fire on the 8000 block of South May Street.  Three minutes later, Engine 129 reported they had a fire in the basement of a 30×125, 3.5-story ordinary, occupied apartment building.  At 1420hrs, Battalion 18 reported that he had heavy fire in the basement and 1st floor of the building and he called for a Still & Box which is about the same time the first picture shown in this gallery was taken.  The fire eventually made its way to the second floor.  Besides the apparatus shown in the photos, Engine 54 took a hydrant on Aberdeen Street which is one block to the east and stretched a line through the gangway to sector 3.  The box was struck at 1514hrs and the Red Cross was assisting 11 occupants who were displaced by this fire.

Chicago house fire 7-28-13

This from Eric Haak:

At approximately 8:15 Sunday morning, a fire broke out in this 25×50 1.5 story brick on the 900 block of north Harding in Chicago’s 13th Battalion.  Engine 95 was first due and reported the home to be fully involved on arrival.  There was a enclosed wood frame porch at the rear of the structure where it appeared the fire originated.  The home had been vacant for a while and had several break-ins.  The fire eventually communicated to the home to the north and caused damage to the frame dormer of a 1.5 story ordinary.  Companies working on the scene were Engines 95 and 76, Trucks 35 and 26, Truck 36 was RIT with the 12th Battalion.

Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 7-24-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Hey guys,
I took a quick ride to the West Side today for a Still and Box at 742 N Pine. Engine 96 reported to Main FAO “we got a worker, Office” as they pulled out of quarters. Engine 117 arrived first-in with the tower and reported a Red X 2.5-story going on the 2nd floor and attic in the rear. By the time I arrived on scene, about 20 minutes later, heavy fire was showing from throughout the top floors. Engines 96, 117, and 113 were pumping while Tower 14 had a master stream. Trucks 26 and 29 were on scene as well. Engine 23 and Trucks 35 and 53 were in staging, but I don’t think they were used. Interesting note, Engine 95, Truck 7 and Battalion 4 had a small fire on Kostner just south of Madison right as companies were stretching at this job. Here’s some of my shots.
Thanks,
Drew Gresik

Restaurant fire in Lincolnwood 5-8-13

The Lincolnwood Fire Department fought a fire at Myron & Phil‘s restaurant at 3990 Devon Avenue in the overnight hours on May 8th. Steve Redick was at the scene and has this short video.

From CBS Chicago:

LINCOLNWOOD, Ill. (CBS) – The founder of an award-winning steakhouse in Lincolnwood has died, around the same time a fire damaged the restaurant on Wednesday.

WBBM Newsradio’s Regine Schlesinger reports, around 2:30 a.m., Myron Freedman died at the age of 95.

A short time later, a fire broke out in the storeroom of Myron & Phil’s, the steakhouse and seafood restaurant he and his brother founded 43 years ago at 3900 W. Devon Ave.

Lincolnwood Fire Battalion Chief John Jaeger said the worst of the damage was confined to the back of the restaurant, and he believes the restaurant can reopen soon.

“I wouldn’t see a reason why he wouldn’t reopen again,” Jaeger said. “It’s more cosmetic … there’s no real structural damage, so it shouldn’t take that long.”

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Box Alarm 4-3-13

Shortly after 8PM Wednesday evening, a caller reported a basement fire at 884 Swan Boulevard in unincorporated Lake County. The area off of Inverrary Road west of Milwaukee Avenue is covered by the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD, and there is only one point of access into and out of the subdivision.

First arriving units were greeted by the homeowner outside the unit with severed burns to both feet. They reported heavy smoke pushing out of the center unit and upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 (working fire) and then immediately to a Box Alarm. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods had two engines, a quint, three ambulances and two chief officers on the scene. Mutual aid with engines came from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Northbrook. Squads came from Prospect Heights (RIT) and then from Loncolnshire-Riverwoods Station 51. Deerfield was at the scene with a truck, and additional ambulances came from Lake Zurich and Wheeling. Chief officers came from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Deerfield, and Mundelein.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods paramedics transferred patient care of the homeowner to the Wheeling ambulance, which transported to Condell Hospital. Two lines went into the fire unit and an additional line was pulled to an exposure unit, while Buffalo Grove firefighters went to the roof to ventilate. The fire was stopped quickly and contained to the unit of origin, but not before burning through the first floor ceiling to create a hole on the second floor. A dog perished in the fire.

The Mess Canteen was at the scene and setup near Lincolnshire-Riverwoods’ new dive/rehab unit.

Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were both at the scene. Images and a video from Larry are in this post and images from Tim are forthcoming.
