Calumet City Fire Department history

This from Wayne Stuart for #tbt:

The Calumet City Fire Department operated this 1974 Mack pumper. It had a 1250 GPM pump and a 500 gallon tank. It ran for many years as Engine Co. 306  from Fire Station #1. It is the one and only lime green colored apparatus that the department operated.

Chicago Fire Department history

This from Steve Redick:

These are some great shots taken in the 70s. I would guess 73 or so … gotta love the “monument” in the background of the engine shot. 54’s Seagrave engine was a great rig, and how could ‘ya not like the traditional Seagrave aerials as well. This was a real ghetto fire company during the years of heavy activity. I believe my dad took these images when he was in the “real” 12th battalion.

The other photos are the kind of stuff SS3 ran with most of the time. 1956 IH former pressure wagons with stuff just thrown in the hosebed. Not sure who took these images but they are dated August 1969. The scenery is typical of their district. All the fires they went to and the primitive tools they used.

This was Oak Forest Engine 91, a 1973 FWD/Pierce 1250/750.  Built on FWD’s 4 wheel drive “Tractioneer” chassis.  On a side note, all Oak Forest apparatus purchased in the 1970’s had manual transmission.

5-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-26-72

This from Eric Haak:

Just after 6:00pm Saturday evening, February 26, 1972. The address was 2825 N. Central Avenue with a fire in the 2-story Polk Brothers carpet store. It would be elevated to a 5-11 before the work was done. Tremendous smoke conditions as you would expect with that fire load. I thought the CTA bus image was interesting as customer’s faces can be seen peering out the windows. No way they would allow passengers to stay on the bus today.

The final image was an addition to last week’s post as I found this one after I submitted the others. Since there was discussion on the buggies in the last post, I figured I would send this in as it shows a different view of both the 1956 Chevrolet and the 1961 Ford. Enjoy!
