Wauconda Box Alarm 1-22-11

The Wauconda Fire Department in MABAS Division 4 was called to the scene of a single-family house fire shortly after 1PM today at 1116 Madison Avenue. Companies found heavy fire in the garage of the structure that was communicating to the house and attic area. They upgraded the response to a MABAS Box Alarm bringing mutual aid from several departments. There was no one home at the time of the fire and though the garage sustained heavy damage to the roof and the vehicle parked inside was destroyed, damage to the main house was limited to the area directly behind the two-story garage.

Companies assisting at the fire were from Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Nunda, Barrington, Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove.

Larry Shapiro took in the fire, but arrived after it was knocked down. Here are several images from the scene.

Also, there was no second floor above the garage floor even though there was a fair sized window installed in the wall as is visible in this street image from Google Maps.

Buffalo Grove house fire 12-21

Buffalo Grove received a call about a house fire this morning as firefighters were preparing to change shifts. When they arrived at 971 Belmar Lane, they had heavy smoke pushing out of the attached garage. Long Grove, Palatine, Arlington Heights and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods responded to assist Buffalo Grove. The fire was held to the garage.

back-to-back fires caught early

Within two hours of each other, neighboring Buffalo Grove and Long Grove fire departments responded to fires within their districts. Both fires could have destroyed the homes had they occurred just a few hours later when the residents were asleep. Buffalo Grove was the first to respond after 11PM to what was a fire in a dryer vent in the crawl space of a small house on St. Marys Parkway. Then, shortly after the still company returned to quarters, they were due to assist the Long Grove Fire Department.

The Long Grove fire was contained to one bedroom after a resident ran across the street to the fire station after midnight and notified staff that there was a fire in his house. When the battalion chief pulled out of quarters, he saw fire in one room. The first company was able to extinguish the fire quickly. There were no hydrants at the scene and a tanker was used to supplement the engine’s tank water.

Buffalo Grove house fire 12/7

Buffalo Grove initially received a call for a smoking outdoor light fixture before an additional call came in reporting a possible house fire last night on Buckthorn Terrace. When the first engine arrived, they reported smoke and then the incident was upgraded to a working fire response (Code 4). The homeowner had arrived home shortly before the fire department arrived. The house was charged with smoke and there was a small amount of visible fire in the rear. Upon making entry, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and then fire in the ‘C-D’ corner of the house. The fire eventually vented itself through a second story  window as interior crews advanced their lines. There was one minor injury to a firefighter who was transported to the hospital and then released shortly thereafter. Arlington Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Long Grove, assisted Buffalo Grove. Barrington provided an ambulance for rehab and a Wauconda ambulance transported the injured firefighter.

At the height of the morning storm yesterday and within a ½ hour of shift change, four calls for service came into Northwest Central Dispatch for the Buffalo Grove Fire Department within minutes of each other. There were two ambulance calls, a reported transformer fire with extension to a shed, and a working fire in a townhouse. As companies scrambled to each call, the transformer fire was just that and had not extended to the shed, but smoke met firefighters on arrival at a center unit in a four-unit townhouse. The fire was upgraded immediately and companies that were already en-route to the shed fire were rerouted providing quick back-up to first-due units.

Buffalo Grove’s 2010 Ferrara Inferno tower ladder was the first fire suppression unit on the scene and was deployed for the first time at a Buffalo Grove fire.

MABAS Division 7 is added to the site

Just when we thought we had a large enough project to undertake … listing each department, each station and every piece of rolling stock in 19 MABAS Divisions … Karl Klotz begins submitting department profiles from a 20th Division, MABAS Division 7 in Kankakee County!

So, we welcome the departments of Division 7 and have posted three of them to get things started.

  • The Grant Park Fire Protection District covers 62 square miles from two stations with 32 paid-on-call firefighters and officers. They have three E-ONE rigs, an engine from American LaFrance, plus ambulances from Horton and Road Rescue. They recently opened a new headquarters station which we mentioned HERE.

The Limestone Township Fire Protection District covers a mere 36 square miles from one station with 40 part-time firefighters and officers. They are running with Pierce, Quality, and Ferrara apparatus and Road Rescue ambulances.   • In Momence, the fire department covers a whopping 92 square miles with a roster of 35 paid-on-call personnel from one station. They have three engines, a brush rig, two tankers, and a rescue squad. The apparatus was built by E-ONE, Pierce, and 4-Guys, plus one tanker that was built in 1964 by W.S.Darley and re-chassisied in 1989 on a Ford C8000 by Quality Manufacturing. Quality was purchased in 2003 by Spartan and now (with what was Luverne Fire Apparatus) have become what is known as Crimson.

Buffalo Grove updates

Buffalo Grove put their new Ferrara engine in service early this summer and the tower ladder went into service several weeks ago. This required some shuffling of apparatus among the stations and the site now reflects the moves.

Station 25 houses both the new Ferrara tower ladder 25 (235) and the reserve E-ONE tower ladder (236) along with an ambulance and Utility 26. The utility goes into service if daily manning is sufficient to staff the unit with two firefighters. The utility responds on ambulance calls to save wear and tear on the tower ladder and also responds on MVAs and fire calls as well.

Station 26 is where the new Ferrara engine (217) is located plus the reserve E-ONE engine (213). There is an in-service ambulance and a reserve ambulance, the squad, the battalion, the dive trailer, the new Polaris ATV, and several staff vehicles.

At Station 27 is the KME quint, the KME reserve engine (218), an ambulance, and a boat.

There is speculation that in the months to come, the tower ladder may move to Station 26 in the center of town. If this happens, then the KME quint would move to Station 25 and the new Ferrara engine would go to Station 27.

Bob Altwasser submitted this image of the new Ferrara Inferno tower ladder that has recently gone into service for the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Department. Tower 181 has a 1500-GPM pump, 300-gallons of water, and a 100′ rear mounted tower ladder.

Ferrara updates

On the Ferrara Fire site there are updated photos of the new Ember engine being built for the Nunda Rural FPD in McHenry County. The pictures can be seen HERE with the body mounted to the cab and chassis.

Also on the Ferrara site HERE are finished photos of the Algonquin Igniter MVP rescue pumper that was on display at the IAFC trade show last week. You’l have to scroll down to see the photos listed alphabetically under Lake in the Hills. Similarly, the new Inferno tower ladder can be seen HERE by scrolling down as well.
