URGENT ALERT – LONG GROVE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT SEEKS REFERENDUM
Why is the Fire District placing a bond referendum on the ballot?
Demand for service and emergency response times in the Long Grove Fire District are increasing due to more people living in the district and increasing traffic congestion. To better meet the demand and keep emergency response times from increasing beyond the point which there will be greater risks to residents and property, the existing fire station should be relocated so that there is better access to the road network servicing the district.
thanks Bill

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
On August 30, Christian Flores called 911 because his mother, Amy, was unconscious and unresponsive, wasn’t breathing, and she didn’t have a pulse.
While sending Wheeling and Long Grove crews to the scene, Regional Emergency Dispatch alarm operator Jacqueline Miller began instructing Flores how to perform CPR. He did so for more than eight minutes until Wheeling firefighters arrived and took over CPR. They also used a defibrillator to shock Flores’ heart into a proper rhythm. A Long Grove FPD ambulance arrived and took Flores to the hospital. Working together, they saved Amy Flores’ life.
Christian Flores, Miller, and the firefighters who responded to the emergency were publicly lauded during Monday’s Wheeling village board meeting for their heroic efforts. Amy Flores was in the audience and received hearty applause from the crowd when Wheeling Fire Chief Mike McGreal introduced her.
Miller was called to the dais to receive a Life Saving Award. Christian Flores was unable to attend the presentation but also received a Life Saving Award.
Company Citation Awards were given to Wheeling Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Menzel, Lt. Jason Macauley, Firefighter/Paramedic Jeff Goolish, and Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician Joe Dina. Company Citation Awards also went to Long Grove firefighter/paramedics Mike Gallagher and Nick McDowell.

Excerpts from the dailyherald.com:
Congratulations to Fire Chief Robert Turpel on his retirement from the Long Grove Fire Protection District after 30 years of service.
Turpel came up through the ranks to become fire chief in 2001. During his 20-year tenure as chief, the LGFPD witnessed extraordinary growth in its formation, business operations and in its heightened service and contribution to the surrounding communities.
Under Turpel’s direction, the fire district became a full-time fire department. Through his leadership and strong financial and business acumen, he was able to update and increase the ranks of firefighters while creating a well-balanced fiscal policy and balance sheet for the department, resulting in the hiring of full-time and part-time firefighters, further needed departmental investments, and the creation of a pension plan for firefighters.
In further service to the community, he initiated the publication of the LGFPD newsletter for the Village of Long Grove, was an active member of the Regional Emergency Dispatch Center, helped create CERT (County Emergency Response Team) for the area of southern Lake County, and was active in updating the regional training center, CAFT (Combined Area Fire Training), that serves many of the fire districts in the area.

Excerpts from the Dailyherald.com:
The Long Grove Fire Protection District is pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Segalla as fire chief, effective Nov. 15.
Chief Segalla brings experience from an extensive fire service career and was selected after a comprehensive nationwide search.
Segalla’s fire career includes serving in Illinois for the Downers Grove Fire Department, Aurora Fire Department and Lockport Township Fire District and, in more recent years, serving as fire chief in the Los Angeles area for the City of West Covina, the Chino Valley Fire District, and the Upland-Montclair Fire Department.
Segalla earned a bachelor’s degree in fire administration from Western Illinois University and a master’s degree in public administration from Northern Illinois University. He has also completed the rigorous Executive Fire Officer course through the National Fire Academy.
Recruitment for the fire chief position was conducted by the Illinois Fire Chief’s Association Professional Evaluation and Assessment Service and yielded 24 applicants. The search and evaluation process was complex and collaborative, encompassing interviews by phone, video conferencing and in person; a comprehensive Assessment Center; and presentations by the top five applicants.
At the conclusion of this process, Chief Segalla was identified as the unanimous choice by the Long Grove Fire Protection District board of trustees.
The LGFPD has been operating under Interim Fire Chief David Riddle since March 2021.
The Long Grove Fire Protection District covers approximately 14 square miles with 12,000 residents in southern Lake and northern Cook Counties of Illinois. The area covered includes portions of five villages and three townships. The department is a combination of full-time sworn members and permanent paid-on-premise members.

Excerpts from the Dailyherald.com:
As a Long Grove Fire Protection District crew participated in continuing education for cardiac arrest protocols, a man sounded his truck’s horn at the station’s garage doors seeking help last month.
Chief Robert Turpel issued commendations Monday night to his firefighters and the registered nurse who was providing the cardiac arrest training for saving the life of Christopher Loeber, 58, of Long Grove.
Loeber was heading to work on July 16 when he began having breathing problems. After finding his rescue inhaler empty and unable to speak, he decided against calling 911 and figured the firehouse was his best shot for help. He pulled his truck in front of the fire station’s doors at about 10:10 a.m.
CPR and advanced life support were provided to Loeber, who was without a pulse for possibly up to three minutes. His pulse returned with adequate cardiac output on the way to Good Shepherd,
