Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Cleanup is underway Tuesday, after a natural gas leak led to a house explosion in Woodstock. It’s not clear what can be salvaged in all of the debris.

Woodstock fire officials said the incident started with a call around 12:30 p.m. Monday about a 2-inch gas main that had been struck by a crew inside a sewer line in the area of Tryon Street and Lincoln Avenue.

There was an explosion about two hours later as Nicor and firefighters were on the scene.

The blast leveled one home and damaged at least 10 buildings, including a church and a school. At least 11 people who have been displaced.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but no one was seriously hurt.

From Woodstock Fire/Rescue District on Facebook:

Early Tuesday afternoon, pedestrian traffic had been reopened to both Tryon Street and Lincoln Street. Broken glass may still be in the area and residents are asked to keep dogs and young children away. Firefighters worked throughout the night extinguishing residual hot spots and hidden fires prior to leaving shortly before 12:00PM. Members from the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District spent nearly 24 continuous hours on the scene.

Investigators from the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and the Woodstock Police Department met early Tuesday morning and began documenting all the structures impacted by the blast. Including the origin home, a total of 20 structures sustained varying amounts of damage. Two homes and a detached garage are considered a complete loss, with two additional homes structurally uninhabitable.

A total of 22 individuals have been displaced with many seeking assistance from the American Red Cross. Two family dogs remain in critical condition at a local veterinary clinic. The Fire District has not been able to confirm if any other pets are missing or perished. At this time, we are told many residences remain without power and electric utilities. Both ComEd and Nicor are working to restore services to the area.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, the Woodstock Police Department, and Nicor Gas Company.

Woodstock Fire / Rescue District

On October 9, 2023, at 12:35PM, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded to the area of N. Tryon Street and Lincoln Street for the smell of natural gas in the area. Firefighters arrived a short time later and determined a contract crew working in the area had struck a 2-inch gas main inside a sewer line. Nicor arrived approximately 30 minutes later and began assessing the damage. As a precaution, firefighters evacuated a nearby church and advised homeowners to shelter in place until Nicor could mitigate the leak.

At 2:38PM, while firefighters were still on scene, a two-story home in the 200 block of Lincoln Ave exploded. The home was instantly leveled and fires were ignited in several adjacent structures.
A request through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was quickly made to the 2nd Level for resources to the scene and change-of-quarters companies. A short time later, the incident commander requested the alarm to be upgraded to the 4th level bringing a total of 20 fire agencies to the scene with several others covering our stations.

Fortunately, no major injuries have been reported. All occupants from the homes have been accounted for at this time. Two firefighters were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. All displaced residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross. Several surrounding residences are without power and gas services with restore time estimates undetermined.

While the damage is still being assessed at least 10 structures were damaged in the blast including a church and school. The cause of the explosion is being investigated by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, the Woodstock Police Department, and Nicor Gas Company.
We greatly appreciate the assistance from all the agencies who responded to the scene, those who covered our stations, and our dispatchers.

4-Alarm house fire for Newport Township FPD 10-24-13

Newport Township firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire this morning in the 35000 block of N. Mill Creek Road in Wadsworth. The house sits well off the road and backs up almost directly to I-94 just past the toll booth.

Arriving companies were unable to spot the fire until they made the long driveway off of Mill Creek Road. They found a large, two-story home with a fire in the upper level. Since the area is without hydrants, the alarm was upgraded immediately to a Box Alarm, then to a 2nd Alarm shortly thereafter. One engine and a 75′ quint made it up the driveway and a relay operation was initiated from the street. Three portable tanks were used on the road as two engines supplied 5″ lines to the quint and the engine in the driveway.

As the fire overhead grew, companies had to pull out and resort to a defensive operation. Several hand lines and an aerial pipe were put into operation. Due to the water needs and the route tenders had to take to refill and return, the alarm was upgraded to a 4th Alarm for additional tenders.

Lake Zurich 4th Alarm house fire 4-21-13

Shortly before 8PM on Sunday evening, the Lake Zurich Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at the house across the street. The chief and 1st engine arrived within minutes and reported a 2-1/2 story, wood frame house with heavy fire in the front at 21716 W. Glendale Road. Lake Zurich Engine 3 was the first engine and had water on the fire very quickly. They hit it with a deck gun and knocked down the majority of the fire which was on the exterior of the house consuming cedar shingle siding. As the first company was making their way into the house with a line, they received a report that a resident might still be inside.

The alarm was elevated to a 2nd Alarm which included water tenders since the fire was in an unincorporated subdivision without hydrants. All residents were quickly accounted for at a neighbor’s home. The balance of the fire was knocked within 20 minutes and companies began extensive overhaul.

There were two injuries which required hospital transport. One was a resident and the other was a neighbor who passed out on the lawn. A firefighter injured his arm but after being evaluated at the scene he signed a release. Prior to transporting the second patient, since the ambulances at the scene were committed either to patient care, rehab, or firefighting duties, the alarm was escalated to a 3rd Alarm for ambulances only plus change of quarters companies.

When the firefighter was injured and there was concern that he too would be transported, a 4th Alarm was requested bringing only the ambulances that were due.

There were many departments at the scene including: Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Long Grove, Round Lake, Libertyville, Deerfield, Palatine Rural, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Arlington Heights, Fox Lake, Nunda Rural, Mundelein, Wauconda, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, the Quad 2 Command Unit, Countryside, Schaumburg, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Barrington, and Cary.

Fox Lake 2nd Alarm house fire 4-8-13

This from Jeff Rudolph:

… some shots from Fox Lake … 04/08/13 Fox Lake responded to a fire in the 38000 blk. of Hillandale in un-incorporated Spring Grove . Engine 223 arrived and found an elevated 1-story house well involved. Command called for an Antioch engine and a Spring Grove tender before pulling box 22-14 to the 2nd alarm for tenders and chiefs, as well as a special for squads from McHenry and Newport. Steep terain and limited access proved difficult for both firefighters and apparatus, as tenders had to back down several blocks of narrow winding gravel roads. Initial thoughts that the resident was still inside the burning house proved wrong, as he arrived from a trip to the store to find firefighters attempting to save his home. Crews worked into the night to extinguish and overhaul the remains. No injuries reported.

Fire in Buffalo Grove 4-8-12

Shortly before 11PM on Sunday, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department received several calls reporting flames seen from a house at 275 W. Dundee Road. First arriving units had fire in an outdoor storage area that had communicated to the structure. The alarm was upgraded to a working fire response bringing Long Grove, Palatine, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods companies to assist the Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights units already on the scene.

Long Grove Fire Department controlled burn – update

A video has been posted by Larry Shapiro of the Long Grove burn down of the house on Checker Road. It’s a bit long, but details the operation from start to finish.

Long Grove Fire Department controlled burn

The Long Grove Fire Department conducted a controlled burn-down of a vacant house at 1889 Checker Road Saturday morning. The house had been used by the fire department over the past two weeks for live-fire training evolutions to train Long Grove and eight other area departments. The house was the scene of what is being called a fire of suspicious origin this past Thursday, but the fire was stopped before it got hold of the main structure, and it was burned today for the public. A developer owns the property and will begin preparing the property for three new homes.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were in attendance and submitted several images.
