Stopped by Niles (IL) Station 2 on Monday and had a great opportunity to see the new tower ladder, and the new ambulance. Many thanks to Jim and the Niles members for allowing us these great shots!
Another new unit is getting ready to be put into service at Niles Station 2. Last week we posted the new Engine 2 for Niles as submitted by Karl Klotz.
Now we have photos from Larry Shapiro of the new Ambulance 2 for Niles along with some additional information.
- The current unit assigned to Ambulance 2 (2008 IHC 4300/2009 Medtec Type I) has already been renumbered as Ambulance 3, where it will be assigned.
- The current Ambulance 3 will become a reserve piece
- The current Ambulance 3R will reportedly be disposed of
Niles is finalizing specs for another new engine to be purchased for Engine 3.
When the new Engine 2 goes into service:
- the current Engine 2 will move to Engine 3
- the current Engine 3 will become a reserve piece
- the current Engine 3R is being disposed of
A correction on the specs for Engine 2 from the previous post:
- there are two 25-gallon foam tanks, A & B
Niles is finalizing specs for a tower ladder for Truck 2. When the new unit is in service:
- the current Truck 2 will become a reserve piece
- Quint 2, the 75′ Pierce Arrow that was formerly owned by the North Maine FPD will reportedly be disposed of
Larry Shapiro submitted the following:
Visited Carol Stream recently and photographed all three front line medic units with the new numbering. All were at Station 28 and I was able to get a group shot as well.
I was told they are expecting a new unit on a Freightliner chassis, a Medtec demo, to replace Medic 29.
Evanston FD updates

Some updated information on the Evanston fleet:
- Here are the current Ambulance 21 (314) and Ambulance 23 (316). (The A23 on the site is gone.)
- There is a new Battalion 21 buggy, a 2013 Chevy Tahoe. It will be outfitted in the next couple weeks and placed into service.
- The fire investigations rig is at station 25.
- The former Engine 25 (1994 Dash) is now numbered E25R.
- The Tele-Squrt is now not numbered, and housed at Station 24 as a spare engine.

The Schiller Park Fire Department is expecting a new ambulance from Medtec to be delivered by early March. This will match the design of their Ambulance 462 and will be one of the last units to be completed before the Medtec shutdown.
*** webmaster query: What other fire departments are expecting the last of the Medtec ambulances to be built?
The Arlington Heights Fire Department has taken delivery of two new IHC 4300/Medtec ambulances. These are the first Type I ambulances in Arlington Heights.

We have more information about new ambulance orders:
One of our readers tells us that:
- Downers Grove just ordered a 2012 Freightliner/Medtec to replace the 2006 Ford/Medtec at station #2
Additionally:
- Arlington Heights has ordered (2) new Type I Medtec ambulances on IHC 4300 chassis similar to their squads. Previously, all of their ambulances were Type III styles on E-Series chassis from Ford.
