Fatal fire in Cicero, 8-1-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

Cicero had a fire in a three-story, brick, residential unit in the 5000 block of 30th Street that also apparently had living space in the attic. Somewhere around 1:30Am, companies arrived to find heavy fire out the second-floor rear, with flames extending to the third floor and the attic space. They had reports that all but one resident were accounted for, though it was not known if the unaccounted for resident had been home.

After an interior attack, companies were pulled out of the building as fire vented through the roof. A defensive attack was initiated which included a master stream from Cicero Truck 1. The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm for additional companies around 2AM.

Primary and secondary searches had been completed on the first three floors, but they were unable to search the attic until the bulk of the fire had been knocked down. A victim was later discovered in the attic space.

Chicago 3-11 Alarm Fire 6-24-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Hey guys,
Took in this job at 2450 S Central Park Ave. We saw the header from Roosevelt and Kedzie and arrived just after the Still companies. Fire was in an “E” shaped, 3-story apartment building. It appeared that the fire was in the cockloft above the 3rd floor, and it was knocked pretty good by the time the 2-11 companies staged. The fire was then rekindled and Commissioner Santiago requested the 3-11. Here are a couple shots I got, including one of the rescues, Squad 1A working in Sector 1, and Truck 32’s guys climbing the main to the roof.

4th Alarm house fire in Wadsworth 4-30-13 (pt 2)

Scott Peterson was at Newport Township’s 4th Alarm fire on Monday in Wadsworth and has submitted many images which will incorporate several posts.

On Tuesday April 30,2013 the Newport FPD received calls of a fire @ 14541 Juniper Ct. Co’s arrived, found a very hvy volume of fire from the roof & interior of the home. The Zion ladder truck arrived and was immediately setup for water tower ops. Initially only one porta tank was available with most of the water going to the Zion truck. The alarm was quickly elevated from a the 2nd alarm on arrival to the 4th alarm. This brought numerous Eng’s & Tenders from MABAS Div 4 as well as MABAS Div 101 (Kenosha County WI). It appears Twin Lakes FD was the farthest Dept to respond. Eventually, 3 porta-tanks setup in series with a very successful continous flow of water with no loss. Considering the amount of fire conditions crews had on arrival and porta tanks and excellent job was done for knockdown.  You’ll see in one photo the complete collapse/failure of a large section of the 2nd flr thru the C division window above the back deck.
Pics of the fire today, with apparatus and more overall scene shots to follow.

Broadview Fire Department Training 5-10-12

The Broadview Fire Department conducted live fire training exercises on Thursday at Filmore and 17th. They did room fires in a vacant house for several hours before the house was well involved. Tim Olk was on-hand and submitted several images of the firefighters, the apparatus, and the fires. Other MABAS Division 20  departments were also included in the training evolutions.

Downers Grove 2-11 on 7/16/11

Stephen Wilcox has submitted images and commentary from yet another extra-alarm fire from Dupage County, this time at 5130 Meadow Lane in Downers Grove.

DG fire was notified at 1632 hours on 7/16/11. This single family home in an exclusive area was discovered by a jogger passing by. She noticed the front door belching fire and called 9-1-1. Understand that this area is heavily forested with creeks and steep ravines, narrow roads and few hydrants that are visible from the road. This house was three stories (equiv) 75′ X 125′ ordinary, not protected.

Water was another difficulty. Hydrants were placed down the side of the ravines so that it could not be seen from the road. In this case, the 5" was hand-jacked down, across and up this ravine to the engine. This line fed a tower. Stephen Wilcox photo
