Fox Lake 2nd Alarm house fire 4-8-13

This from Jeff Rudolph:

… some shots from Fox Lake … 04/08/13 Fox Lake responded to a fire in the 38000 blk. of Hillandale in un-incorporated Spring Grove . Engine 223 arrived and found an elevated 1-story house well involved. Command called for an Antioch engine and a Spring Grove tender before pulling box 22-14 to the 2nd alarm for tenders and chiefs, as well as a special for squads from McHenry and Newport. Steep terain and limited access proved difficult for both firefighters and apparatus, as tenders had to back down several blocks of narrow winding gravel roads. Initial thoughts that the resident was still inside the burning house proved wrong, as he arrived from a trip to the store to find firefighters attempting to save his home. Crews worked into the night to extinguish and overhaul the remains. No injuries reported.

New engine in Antioch – update

Jeff rudolph submitted an image of the new UST engine in Antioch with some updates:

The new Antioch engine will run out of sta. 1, the ALF will go to sta. 3, and the ’73 Pirsch is gone.

Antioch Fire District Engine 1 Spartan UST

The Daily Herald reports that Antioch will have a “wet-down” for the new engine on May 29th.

Two years after it originally received a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is gearing up to welcome its newest fire engine with a ceremony from the time of horse-drawn wagons. … the department will host an event featuring the century-old rituals of “wetting down” the new truck, pushing out the old truck and pushing in the new truck.

The ceremony is set for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 835 Holbek Drive. It is open to the public.

“In days gone by, when the horses were pulling the fire engines, the tradition was to wet down the wheels and wipe them off and then push the fire pump into the station,” fire Chief John Nixon said. “They wet down the wheels because they wanted to maintain the wooden spokes, so they wouldn’t come into disrepair.”

The truck may look a bit different from the others. The department’s apparatus committee decided the new truck will feature a traditional black roof and red body, as opposed to most of Antioch’s trucks that have a white roof.

“The committee felt this was an opportunity to move ahead as the Antioch Fire Department turns 100 years old next March … (and) adopt a new tradition,” Nixon said. “Black over red is very popular in Chicagoland.”

The truck will also display a newly designed Antioch Fire Department [scramble].

thanks Chris

Local apparatus at FDIC 2012

There were four area units on display this year in the FDIC Exhibits. New engines for Carol Stream, Fermilab, and Northlake were shown in separate booths and the MABAS 10 MVU was also in the exhibit hall.

A bit of “retro” in the Pierce booth.

Most have probably seen the newest Pierce cab and chassis that was unveiled last year – the Dash CF. It featured a grille that matched the Velocity, the Impel, and the Arrow XT.

As it turns out, the engine sits in the back of the cab and the grille is for aesthetics only. This year, Pierce displayed a 105′ rear-mount, PUC, quint on the Dash CF chassis without a grille. If one looks beyond the one-piece windshield and the cab-tilt cutouts, the unit has the appearance of an early Pierce Arrow or a Javelin.

Lisle house fire 7/1/11

Stephen Wilcox submitted yet another recent house fire from Dupage County, this time in Lisle. Stephen submitted several images and commentary;

This box alarm was in an unhydranted area in the north end of Lisle’s district. Typically, the weather was hot and humid. No one home at the time of the fire (1115 hours on 7/1/11) may have contributed to a response delay. Structure was one story “L” shaped, about 40″X80″ ordinary, located on Red Oak. Command also called a box for tankers.

Barrington 2-11 5-10-11

Barrington Fire Department house fire Flynn Creek 5-10-11 2-11

Firefighters encountered heavy fire upon arrival and had to shuttle water to the scene. The fire which reportedly began in the garage spread quickly throughout the home which appeared from the front to be a ranch house when in fact there were two-stories in the rear.Larry Shapiro photo

Shortly before 1AM, Barrington received a call reporting fire in an attached garage at 27818 W. Flynn Creek Drive. This is an area without hydrants and the initial alarm included both tankers from Barrington plus mutual aid from Long Grove with Tanker 55 in addition to all Barrington companies and a Lake Zurich engine.  Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the house that sits on a hill with one-story in front and two-stories in the rear. They immediately upgraded to a Box Alarm which brought help from Carpentersville, Hoffman Estates, East Dundee, Cary, Rolling Meadows, Wauconda, Palatine, and the Palatine Rural Fire Department. Flynn Creek is a narrow, one-lane road which barely accommodated the tankers and a handful of other apparatus. As the fire progressed, a 2nd alarm was struck which brought tankers from South Elgin, Bartlett, and Nunda in addition to another truck and two more engines. Most of the 2nd alarm companies were not put to work.

The tanker shuttle brought roughly 42,000 gallons of water to the fire from 8 tankers. There were no injuries reported.

Larry Shapiro was at the fire and submitted a few quick images. The gallery can be viewed HERE, and the video is still in the works.

Jeff Rudolph reports that Antioch had a fire yesterday at 208 Birchwood. The fire came in at 1430 hours and companies found a 2-car detached garage which was fully involved. Fire  extended to a camper and a boat in the driveway. All was a total loss. Mutual aid to the scene was from Fox Lake, Lake Villa, and Round Lake. The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical.

US Tanker or US Tank?

After adding several units recently to the site and finding both US Tank and US Tanker on various nameplates, a call was placed to the manufacturer to determine the story. So, for those interested in the difference, the company, which is now called US Tanker, says that between the years of 1989 through 1996 they went by the name US Tank. Since then, they are known as US Tanker. The confusion was renewed recently with Tanker 72 in Woodstock which was manufactured in 1993 and is branded with the name of US Tank. (although it is currently labeled incorrectly on the site as US Tanker and will be updated.)
