Oak Brook Terrace is on the site

Oak Brook Terrace FPD patchAnother department in MABAS Division 12 has been added to the web site. The Oak Brook Terrace Fire District operates out of one station and covers a district of 2.5 square miles with a combination of full-time and part-time personnel. This station is packed with apparatus. They have two engines, a tower ladder, two ambulances, a TRT trailer, and a pickup. As mentioned in previous posts, they just put a brand new Spartan/Marion engine into service. This unit represents a transition for the department to black over red rigs from white over red. The other engine and tower ladder are both E-ONE units and the ambulances were built by Medtec.

Chicago is well known as the birthplace for the Snorkel’s use in the fire service, and the entire Chicago metropolitan area was a mecca for Snorkels. Units could be found with every boom length that was offered and built by several different body builders. Prior to purchasing the 95′ tower ladder from E-ONE in 1991, this department had an unusual 85′ Snorkel on a conventional GMC 7000 chassis. This was one of the only Snorkels in the area that was not built on a C-Series chassis from Ford, a cab-over International, or on a custom fire truck chassis.

This 1964, 85' Pitman Snorkel preceded the the E-ONE tower ladder in Oak Brook Terrace. Shown here at their old stations, the body was built by Pierce on a GMC 7000 chassis with a V-12 engine. Snorkel 86, as it was known at the time, had a 1,000-GPM pump and carried 200 gallons of water. Larry Shapiro collection

Oak Lawn 2-11

updated with more photos at 11:45PM

Oak Lawn pulled a 2-11 late this afternoon for fire in a strip mall on 95th Street. Hank Sajovic was on the scene within minutes and submitted several terrific images of the buildings before companies got water to the front. The shots depict firefighters in the rear where the fire was discovered at Eva’s Bridal Shop and then the progression of heavy smoke and fire out the front on 95th Street as the fire spread to the Radio Shack next door.

Darien-Woodridge has been added to the site

Darien-Woodridge Fire District patchIn MABAS Division 10, the Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District has three stations. This is an E-ONE department dating back many years. They currently have an E-ONE quint, three E-ONE engines, and two E-ONE ambulances. This department used to have lime green apparatus with white roofs and has transitioned to replace the green with red over the past several years. There are two vehicles left with the original color scheme.

Their district includes parts of Darien and Woodridge as well as the unincorporated areas of Downers Grove and some of unincorporated Westmont. They are staffed with both full-time and part-time personnel, and in 2009, they ran 2,450 total runs.

Chicago 2-11 alarm fire in Rogers Park

Fire broke out in a three-story apartment building this afternoon around 1PM in Rogers Park. First arriving units reported flames through the roof. Shortly thereafter the 9th Battalion requested a Box Alarm  and then a 2-11 as fire involved units on the second and third floors of the building at the corner of Newgard Avenue and Northshore Avenue. Tower 21, Truck 47, and Truck 25 had their aerials deployed in addition to multiple ground ladders. Engines 59, 70, 71, and 102 (running with a spare #D546) were all pumping.

Truck 47 was setup on the corner of sectors 1 and 2. This is one of the oldest Pierce ladder trucks in the city. It was purchased along with Truck 52, and both were delivered in 2000. There were no orders for additional Pierce units at the time. Chicago also received nine E-ONE ladders and an American LaFrance/LTI tower ladder that year. Trucks 47 and 52 have the only Pierce ladders that were painted white. All of the subsequent purchases including the tower ladders were painted gray. Larry Shapiro photo

Engine 59 was also in sector 1. They run with a 1998 HME SFO/Luverne engine. This series of engines are unique to Chicago in that their water tanks actually hold 535 gallons instead of the customary 500 gallons. Larry Shapiro photo

Glenview Fire at Park District Facility

Flames were reported to be 40 feet in the air by police units when they arrived at the Glenview Park District Facility at 1100 Roosevelt Avenue just after midnight this morning. When Glenview Fire Department companies arrived  they initiated a defensive attack prior to requesting a MABAS Box Alarm for additional units. The building incorporated offices on one end and equipment storage throughout the rest. Several vehicles were destroyed along with the building. Several hand lines operated as well as elevated master streams from Northfield Truck 29 (E-ONE) and Glenview Truck 14 (Pierce).  Three engines from Glenview and one from Wilmette were pumping at this fire.

Waukegan 2-11 on 11-5-10

Jeff Rudolph took in the 2nd alarm tender box yesterday in Waukegan and submitted several photos. The fire on 11/05/10 came in at 1400hrs. and was at 5666 W. Victor Lane in the far southwest corner of their district. It is a non-hydranted area. Fire was in the attached garage of a 1-story frame.  Knollwood E44 was used to draft water supplied by the tenders.

Chicago apparatus on-scene

Oak Park firefighter Dan McInerney submitted several recent images of CFD apparatus at two different incidents.

  • The first images show T29 and E113 at a still alarm at 5148 W. Madison on 11/4/10. The fire was in the grease chute of a one story 75×35 restaurant. One line off E113 was used.

The medium duty Pierce aerials which are in Chicago's fleet require only one set of outriggers. The tip load is rated at 500 pounds. Aerials with heavier tip load capacities require additional jacks. Dan McInerney photo

  • The next images are of CFD T28 at a still at 2015 N. Elston. Fire was in a rooftop ventilation unit of a large factory complex. Two lines off E30 were used.

CFD Truck 28 is deployed to the roof of an industrial building at 2015 N. Elston Avenue. An interesting note about the CFD E-ONE aerials for historians or those interested in trivia is that for each of the nine units made in 2000, the three-digit shop id# (E287 for Truck 28) is the same as the last three digits of the E-ONE shop order number (so121287 for Truck 28). Gurnee is on the site

Gurnee Fire Department patch

Fire departments in Lake County, MABAS Division 4, continue to be added to the site. The Gurnee Fire Department is now the latest to be posted. They have two stations covering 33 square miles which includes the Six Flags Great America amusement park and Gurnee Mills, an enormous outlet mall. The Gurnee suppression fleet is made up entirely of E-ONE apparatus and currently all four of their ambulances are Type I models from Road Rescue on IHC 4700 or IHC 4300 series’ chassis. A new Type I ambulance is presently on order from Wheeled Coach.

Gurnee also houses some specialty MABAS assets. They store an interesting 1991 Mack/Volvo roll-off chassis which is used to transport metal storage containers which contain equipment and supplies for MABAS Divisions 4&5. One container is for the Technical Rescue Team (TRT) with tools and lumber and the other is for the Wildland Task Force which carries, among other things, an ATV.

An interesting note about the E-ONE apparatus is the wide range of chassis and cab styles that are represented.

In 1998 when Gurnee received their new E-ONE tower ladder, they arranged to have the unit photographed with one of the main town attractions. At that time, Gurnee Mills was billed as the largest outlet mall in the country. Planet Hollywood was one of the anchor restaurants at the mall. Larry Shapiro collection

Gurnee Fire Department E-ONE Sentry HDR

Gurnee Squad 1352 was ordered with a four-door Sentry cab and a vista roof. The Sentry is distinguishable by the straight, non-contoured door line of the driver's door. The vista roof was a raised roof that E-ONE offered without full height rear doors. This photo was taken inside Six Flags Great America when the squad was delivered. The graphics are no longer representative of how the squad looks today. Larry Shapiro collection
