2nd Alarm Fire plus Haz Mat Box Alarm in Cary 3-6-13

An explosion occurred in Cary at 640 Industrial Drive Wednesday.

This is from the Chicago Tribune:

Three people were injured this afternoon after several explosions at a paint manufacturing warehouse in northwest suburban Cary, officials said.

Cary police and firefighters were called to the Fox Valley Services, 640 Industrial Drive, at about 1:15 p.m. after a report of an explosion, said Cary Police Chief Steven Casstevens. The fire was struck out at about 5 p.m., he said.

When emergency crews arrived a second explosion occurred in the 2-story warehouse building, said Casstevens. The combination of the two explosions caused the front of the brick structure to be blown off, he said. The explosions also caused a small hole at the rear of the building, he said.

Three workers at the facility were taken to area hospitals for treatment, Casstevens said. Their conditions were not immediately available but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.

A hazerdous materials response was called the building as a was a unit that dispenses foam to put out the fire at the paint manufacturing facility, he said.

Jim Hursh said sometime around 1 p.m. he heard an explosion come from Fox Valley Services, 640 Industrial Drive, located about a block from his own business, Whitey’s Crane Rentals.

“We walked up to the door (and) holy crap there was … major smoke coming out of the building,” Hursh said.

He then heard a second explosion. Within moments, Hursh saw several fire trucks and ambulances arrive and at least one man who appeared to have been burned on his face.

Veath said two of the three employees injured in the fire were transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, and one was flown by helicopter from Good Shepherd to a burn center. There were no injuries to firefighters, he noted.

More from Scott Peterson:

Several pics of the Cary 2nd alarm & Hazmat Box about 15 mins after FD first arrived on scene. Unfortunately I had to leave and I guess things got real interesting after that point.  This front wall is at one end of the bldg, and looking at Google Maps, looks like almost a seperate bldg attached to the main one. This front wall about 1/2 of the height was blown out the entire length. There was also explosion damage in the rear which had the CN&W RR tracks and Rt 14 (NW Hwy) in back of. In front are Flammable tanks that co’s where greatly concerned about having an incident with them. They had 2-3 large handlines led out as well as their tower ladder flowing. As I was leaving the Algonquin Tower ladder was moved up and used. Channel’s 5 & 7 have some good aerial video. Pics where quick as the entire area was being evacuated for about 2 blocks due to the hazards.

North Aurora & Sugar Grove moving to Tri-Com?

This from a CarmaChicago conversation:

Tri-Com will probably be adding North Aurora Fire and Sugar Grove Fire and Police to their covered agencies in the coming months. (http://www.tri-com911.org/DOCS/Agenda%20Regular%20030613%20(revised).pdf)
Rumor also has it that they will be adding a second fire dispatch channel, but I don’t know what the freq or PL will be for that yet. Sugar Grove PD will take the 5 series unit designators (5-paul-x, etc) when they make the switch.

Illinois LODD – Hudson FF killed and 5 injured

Six members of the Hudson fire department from western McLean County were injured, one fatally, as they worked an accident on a snowy interstate highway near Hudson Tuesday night.

Several articles are available:

This from Pantagraph.com:

The 39-year-old volunteer firefighter for the Hudson Community Fire Protection District who was killed while at the scene of a multi-vehicle accident near Hudson Tuesday night has been identified as Chris Brown.

“Preliminary findings indicate that he died from multiple blunt force injuries (head, chest, pelvis) due to being struck by a semi-tractor trailer truck,” Coroner Beth Kimmerling said in a statement.

“Today we lost a member of our Hudson family,” said Hudson Fire Chief Dan Hite. “We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones, and we must not forget the valuable contributions he made to this community and the impact he has left on the Hudson Fire Department. The Hudson Fire Department is a close-knit family and the loss of one of our own affects us all. A tragedy of this type is felt by each and every member, but together, we can make it through. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Brown, who was full time firefighter with the Bloomington Fire Department, was married and the father of two sons.

This from The News-Gazette:

Six members of the Hudson fire department from western McLean County were injured, one fatally, as they worked an accident on a snowy interstate highway near Hudson Tuesday night.

A release from McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling and the Hudson Community Fire Protection District said firefighters were working a multiple-vehicle accident on Interstate 39 near Hudson at 9:45 p.m. when a southbound semitrailer truck carrying automobiles lost control and struck three emergency vehicles belonging to the Hudson fire department and the Illinois State Police.

Kimmerling’s office said 39-year-old Christopher R. Brown of Hudson was killed in the crash. He was married and a father of two.

The names of the injured firefighters have not been released.

Responsibility or Liability – nurse refuses to perform CPR

Totally off-track for this site and on the other side of the country … but maddening nonetheless;

An event occurred in California at an independent living facility … you be the judge:

CPR refusal case probed in Bakersfield

Police were investigating Monday whether there was any criminal wrongdoing in the handling of a health emergency at an independent living facility where a woman died after a nurse refused to provide CPR.

An official at Glenwood Gardens, a sprawling, gated facility in Bakersfield, defended the nurse, saying she had followed policy in dealing with the 87-year-old woman who collapsed in a dining room.

A police dispatcher who fielded the 911 call was told the woman appeared to have a heart problem and was barely breathing. Police immediately routed the call to the Fire Department, where a dispatcher pleaded with a nurse at the home to perform CPR on the woman.

The nurse refused, saying one of the facility’s policies prevented her from doing CPR, according to an audio recording of the call.

Bakersfield Police spokeswoman Michaela Beard said the department is looking into the incident.

An unidentified woman made the Feb. 26 call, and asked for paramedics to be sent to help the woman. Later, a woman who identified herself as a nurse got on the phone and told dispatcher Tracey Halvorson she was not permitted to do CPR on the woman.

Halvorson urged the nurse to start CPR. “I understand if your boss is telling you, you can’t do it,” the dispatcher said. “But … as a human being … you know, is there anybody that’s willing to help this lady and not let her die?”

“Not at this time,” the nurse answered.

During the 7-minute, 16-second call, Halvorson assured the nurse that Glenwood couldn’t be sued if anything went wrong with CPR.

Halvorson is an experienced dispatcher and has worked for the county center for at least a decade, Kern County Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael Miller said.

Firefighters and ambulance personnel arrived at the facility seven minutes after the call came in, Miller said. The county does not know who made the call, he added.

The woman had no pulse and wasn’t breathing, Fire Department spokesman Anthony Galagaza added. Crews started CPR and loaded her onto a gurney. She was later declared dead at a hospital.
