Rockdale is added to MABAS Division 15

We have added yet another department in MABAS Division 15. The Rockdale Fire Protection District has one station with a three square mile district. They have two engines, a tanker, a squad, a brush truck, and two support vehicles. The newest engine is a 2008 custom Sutphen top-mount which is backed up by a 1994 FMC Omega pumper on a Sentinel chassis. The cab and chassis were built by Spartan and basically represent the Spartan RS style (round-steel) but there was a custom set of trim packages and options that were unique to the FMC private label.

IAFC Fire Rescue International Trade Show Final Installment!

Chicago Fire Department Spartan Crimson aerial ladder

The first Spartan/Gladiator Crimson 103' rear mount aerial ladder. The assignment for this piece has not yet been released. Larry Shapiro

There have been several previous postings which referenced the IAFC Fire Rescue International Trade Show in Chicago several weeks ago. A gallery is available by scrolling to the bottom of the page HERE which fittingly shows many of the trucks as they were leaving McCormick Place and lining up to receive a few gallons of fuel so that they could make their way to a gas station. As with any trade show, the fuel is siphoned out of the tanks before they enter the convention center as a safety measure to reduce the hazards of fires and leaks.

Although the units featured in the gallery are a hodgepodge sampling of the display pieces, there are images of several local units which are better shots than what was available inside the convention center. These images include the Freightliner/Medtec MICU from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, the Pierce Impel quint from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago, the Spartan/Super Vac (SVI) HDR from Cherry Valley, the Pierce Velocity PUC tower ladder from South Holland, the custom Sutphen SP112 industrial tower ladder for the Exxon Mobile Joliet Refinery and the Spartan/Crimson rear mount aerial ladder for Chicago.

Flossmoor is added to Division 24 departments

Another department in Division 24 has been added to the site thanks to Karl Klotz. Minus the brush rig, the entire Flossmoor fleet is now available to view HERE. Flossmoor was one of the first area departments to embrace the maximum height cab extensions beginning in 1990 with an early Pierce Lance followed in 1994 by an even larger cab from HME on a unit built by Luverne. Both of these units featured fully enclosed top mounted pump modules. Their newest engine also features a raised roof cab from HME although it is shorter and lower than the earlier model. This 2000 model year Central States engine also features a top mount pump panel but it is not enclosed within the cab. Rounding out their suppression fleet is a 1996 custom Sutphen 70′ mid-ship tower ladder. All of their apparatus are painted black over red.
