Naperville’s new Engine 4

Lt. Andy Hilk from Naperville has informed us that the new 2010 Spartan Gladiator/Crimson engine is having equipment mounted before it is put into service at Engine 4, probably within the next week. The engine has a 1,500-GPM Hale pump, carries 750 gallons of water and 50 gallons of Class B foam. It features ROM Roll-up doors and has an 8KW Smartpower generator.

The 1991 E-ONE Hush pumper which was in reserve has been sold to the Rockford Fire Department.

Naperville reassignments …. requires a scorecard

Several months ago we posted the Naperville Fire Department to the site. Several photographers visited the department on separate occasions to document the new equipment and the placement of companies in each station. Several of the rigs had been moved and reassigned since they were photographed a year or so ago but everything was brought up-to-date for the posting with the help of Naperville Lt. Andy Hilk.

Well, we had received information that the Naperville FD was not yet done moving companies and that changes were coming. Bill Friedrich submitted the following information regarding reassignments throughout the stations.

Medic 9 is out of service
Medic 1 is now using the 2007 IHC/Medtec that was previously Medic 9
Squad 1 (1997 E-ONE) has moved back to Station 8 and is now Squad 8 … again
Engine 8’s 2008 Crimson rig is back at Station 1 as Engine 1
The 2009 Crimson quint from Truck 10 is now running as Truck 5
The 2005 E-ONE tower ladder which was Truck 5 is now a spare
The 1994 E-ONE tower ladder without a pump that was in reserve has now been decommissioned and will likely be sold
Engine 10 is now using a 2005 E-ONE Typhoon
The TRT trailer is moving to Station 10

Squad 8 when it was moved to Station 1 ... prior to being renumbered.

Plainfield and Naperville updates

Lt. Andy Hilk of Naperville provided the following information:

Plainfield FPD has a new St.2 and Admin campus under construction on 135th St. just east of Rt.59, behind the Menards. They also have 2 new rigs at St.2. (Not a good place for rig photos right now with all the construction going on.)
Naperville’s new E-4 is still at the dealer for prep work but hopefully we will get it next week.
Earlier this month Naperville shuffled some rigs around again. I will let you know … where everything ends up.

Editors note: We can hardly wait to rearrange the apparatus that we have posted throughout the 10 Naperville stations!

Pink Heals Tour with Buffalo Grove Fire Department

The Pink Heals Tour 2010 has visited Rockford, the IAFC trade show in Chicago, Matteson, Naperville, and now Buffalo Grove during it’s time in Illinois. Last night in Buffalo Grove, the three pink fire engines were joined by a Mount Prospect police car with pink graphics and the Buffalo Grove IAFF Honor Guard. The three trucks (two EONE Hush engines and a Spartan FMC Sentinel) served in Bangor, ME; Tyler, TX; and Henry, Va.

On the Pink Heals Tour Facebook page, they describe themselves as:

We are the “Cares Enough to Wear Pink”: Guardians of the Ribbon”
An organization that drives PINK Fire Trucks across the United States to support women in their fight against cancer and inspire men to get involved. It was started in Phoenix, Arizona by firefighter Dave Graybill. We are making our way across the country and it is our job to also spread the word worldwide. Guardians of The Ribbons is a group of firefighters, police officers and leaders in the community; our purpose is raising awareness for the fight against cancer and inspire men to support the women of their community. On October 25, 26 and 27 we would like to have the public safety, local leaders and citizens of the community wear something pink to show support for those women battling cancer. It is in our nature to fight for those who have lost the ability to fight for themselves and we are asking the public for support. It will not only bring us together, but also give those who are battling this disease an overwhelming feeling of HOPE.

Crimson updates Naperville engine

Big fire in Naperville

The Naperville Fire Department had a 3-11 alarm fire on Sunday which originated in a downtown restaurant. The Daily Herald has an article on the fire HERE. The fire originated in a grease chute inside the Rosebud Restaurant at 48 W. Chicago Avenue and proceeded to travel in the void spaces of the older building. All 10 Naperville houses were involved at the scene. The extra alarms brought mutual aid companies to the scene and to cover Naperville firehouses. Truck 1, one of the brand new twin Spartan/Crimson 103′ quints went to work in front of the building during the early stages of the incident. It was later moved down the street where it was photographed by Larry Shapiro. Mutual aid was provided by Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Plainfield, Lisle-Woodridge, Darien Woodridge, Wheaton, Warrenville, Aurora, Glen Ellyn, Tristate, Aurora, Lockport, North Aurora and Westmont.

Both of Naperville’s tower ladders were working and Squad 1, Engine 2 and two spare engines were pumping at the scene.

Division 16 is complete

Station 2 is home to a medic unit, an engine, and the special teams which includes haz mat, the dive team, and a mobile unit for the fire investigation team. Larry Shapiro photo

Division 16 encompasses only three fire departments but it represents roughly 100 square miles of area and includes 19 fire stations. The departments are Downers Grove, Lisle Woodridge, and Naperville. Previously, Downers Grove and recently Naperville have been added to the site with their combined 14 stations. As of today, the five stations of the Lisle Woodridge Fire District are on the site as well.

MABAS Division 16 Special Operations Unit

Three of the Lisle Woodridge stations are in the Village of Lisle and two are in the Village of Woodridge. They staff four engines, two trucks, a battalion chief and four medic units. One of the medic units is only staffed for 12 hours a day. Neither of their truck companies (one ladder and one platform) carries water or has a pump. Lisle Woodridge used to maintain a suppression fleet that was 100% E-ONE and a medic fleet of Freightliner/Life Line ambulances. Today, though several E-ONE units remain in the fleet, they are being phased out by Pierce units. Currently both trucks and two of the engines are Pierce. The medic units are still from Life Line although the Freightliner FL60 chassis are being replaced with IHC 4300 chassis.

Lisle Woodridge 1984 Spartan Gladiator EONE rescue unit

This unit which has no official assigned duties was one of the first super-command-cab units built by Spartan back in 1984. Spartan introduced these enormous cabs to the fire service and the first few units were built for suburban Chicago departments including this EONE rescue, a Frontline rescue for North Palos, and an FMC pumper for Fox Lake. The square cab design was not popular and made way for a contoured cab after a short period of time.

All 10 stations in Naperville have been photographed and added to the site with the apparatus as it is currently assigned. This includes the two new Spartan/Crimson quints and the reassigned engine 8 and squad 1. A return trip will be necessary when the next Spartan Crimson engine comes in to replace the Freightliner/EONE currently running out of station 4. Our thanks to Lt. Andy Hilk for making the arrangements for the group to get the photos around town and to the personnel who were very accommodating to a bunch of photographers.

It’s been several days since there has been a new posting to the site, but travel and other duties have grabbed all of the available time. Within the next few days though, several updates will be completed. Contributors have been busy photographing apparatus and it takes a bit of time to collate everything and place all the images into the proper spots. Here though is some of what is coming:
