Niles FD Acting Chief Richard  Scipione

Acting Niles Fire Chief Robert Greiner notified village officials he was retiring immediately last Friday (Dec. 13), leading to the appointment of District Chief Rich Scipione as acting fire chief.

Greiner spent more than 24 years with the Niles Fire Dept. He has been a firefighter for 30 years.

Niles Mayor George Alpogianis said Greiner did not give a reason for stepping down. He said Greiner submitted his letter of resignation at 4:40 p.m. Dec. 13, to be effective at 5 p.m. that day.

Scipione has been a Niles firefighter since 2002. As district chief, part of Scipione’s duties was overseeing emergency medical service operations.

The village has contacted the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association to assist in the search for a permanent chief.

Greiner’s sudden retirement comes on the heels of the retirement of Chief Marty Feld on Sunday, Nov. 30 after more than 38 years as a Niles firefighter and chief since 2017. When Feld retired, Greiner was named acting chief.

Elwood Fire Protection District news

From the ELWOOD VILLAGE BOARD MEETING MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 4, 2024

An Ordinance Approving a Site Plan, Granting a Special Use and Certain Variances From the Elwood Zoning Ordinance Elwood Fire Protection District applied for a special use permit and associated variations to permit a Fire Training Tower Facility to be located in a side yard, exceed the one (1) thousand square foot size restriction for the total amount of accessory structures, and to exceed height restrictions for accessory structures in a R-1 Single Family Residential District. Per regulations of underlying zone district Police and Fire Stations are permitted use by Special Use review. The proposed structure complies with all code requirements excepting the 1,000 square foot building maximum and the required placement in the rear yard. The request for a variation is necessary to build the approximate 960 square foot building on site, and in the proposed side yard. The proposed height 37’4” of the structure exceeds the maximum allowable height per code. There are no other concerns with the development. The entire site is approximately 5 acres, the building will be located far from any neighboring structures and does not encroach within or near any setbacks.

A motion was made by Trustee Elberson to adopt an Ordinance Approving a Site Plan, Granting a Special Use and Certain Variances From the Elwood Zoning Ordinance. Trustee Maas seconded the motion. A vote was called: Trustee Schmidt – yes, Trustee Maas – yes, Trustee Lab – yes, and Trustee Elberson – yes. The motion carried.
