Libertyville 2nd Alarm fire, 3-15-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

The Libertyville Fire Department received a call around 10:15PM on Saturday reporting a barn fire on Bradley Road in Mettawa. Units were dispatched from Libertyville, Lake Forest, and Knollwood. Upon arrival they found fire in one building on the property of a large stable at 855 N. Bradley Road.  Libertyville Quint 462, Engine 463, Engine 461, and the Libertyville tender entered the north driveway and the Lake Forest engine came in the south driveway. Lake Forest had a hydrant at the street and Knollwood tapped another hydrant near the north driveway to supply the Libertyville companies. Prior to the establishment of secure water sources, the Libertyville tender and the two engines nursed the quint.

Within minutes the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm for additional units including water tenders. They made a good stop and did not put the mutual aid water tenders to work.  A second alarm was requested for manpower to assist the companies with extensive overhaul.

Buffalo Grove water rescues 6-26-13

The heavy storms that went through the area Tuesday night and Wednesday morning dumping a huge amount of water in many suburbs caused widespread road closures and flooding. Area fire departments were called to help motorists stranded in standing water as well as residents that could not leave their homes.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department requested a MABAS Box Alarm from within divisions 1 and 4 for swift water rescue techs and boats to help residents on St. Mary’s Parkway between Raupp Boulevard and Lincoln Terrace. Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville and Mount Prospect responded with techs and boats in addition to techs from a handful of other neighboring departments.

Larry Shapiro submitted images and a video (forthcoming) from the Buffalo Grove incident.

Libertyville 2nd Alarm Fire 3-27-13 (pt 1)

The Libertyville Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the Jamaican Gardens North located at 14595 W. Rockland Road (Route 176). First companies found heavy smoke obscuring visibility on Route 176 and had a significant fire burning on the east end of the property near what was the retail store entrance. An attack was initiated and the fire was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm.

The business had closed to the public several years ago and was reportedly vacant. Libertyville Tower 461 and Engine 463 were deployed on the eastern side of the property. The fast moving fire quickly spread to additional buildings on the west side, where access was limited. Lake Forest Tower Ladder 421 was positioned on the northern driveway and Countryside Engine 412 was at the northwest corner. As the fire grew in intensity, the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm bringing additional units to the scene.

A special request was made for the Division 1 MVU out of Wheeling, but the unit was not deployed and subsequently released before the box was struck out.

The two tower ladders deployed master streams in addition to multiple hand lines and two multi-versals. Along with Libertyville Engine 463 and the Countryside engine, Lake Bluff Engine 517 and Knollwood Engine 44 were also pumping. The fire was struck out after roughly three hours.

Other fire departments with companies at the scene were Mundelein, North Chicago, and Lake Zurich with ambulances, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Gurnee with rescue squads, Highland Park with a truck, plus Waukegan, Deerfield, and Newport Township with engines.  Chief officers came from Countryside, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Bluff, and Lake Forest.

Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro were at the scene.

This is the first in a three part series covering this fire.

New dispatch center in Lake County

The Vernon Hills Review has an article which states that:

A new joint dispatching center at the Vernon Hills Police Department will …, the Vernon Hills emergency communications center, will provide dispatching services for Libertyville police and fire… in addition to Vernon Hills police and the Countryside Fire  Protection District. Libertyville will no longer operate a police and fire dispatch center at the Libertyville Police Department.

“We’re going to be able to reduce our costs and improve our service at the same time,”  said [Libertyville Fire Chief Rich Carani]. “It’s a win-win situation for the residents. It’s eventually going to improve service because we’re going to be able to have better training and better equipment by sharing the cost.”

Libertyville officials have estimated that the village could save as much as $1.5 million over five years by combining dispatching services with Vernon Hills.

Libertyville had seven dispatchers … two were hired by Vernon Hills … at the new communications center, three were reassigned to other positions in the Libertyville Police Department [while] two others were not retained and are leaving the department.

The Countryside Fire Protection District, which provides services to Vernon Hills, Long Grove, Hawthorn Woods, Kildeer, and unincorporated areas of Lake County, consolidated its fire dispatch services with Vernon Hills in September 2010.

Countryside Fire Chief Jeff Steingart said the merger of Countryside’s dispatching services with Vernon Hills two years ago was a “great move” and he thinks the addition of Libertyville will provide even more efficiency and cooperation between departments.

“We were already working very closely with the Libertyville Police Department,” he said. “This is just a great partnership that will aid in response to emergencies by bringing everybody together in an efficient manner.”

In addition to Vernon Hills hiring two emergency dispatchers from Libertyville to handle police calls, Countryside Fire will add two new dispatchers at the Vernon Hills communications center to cover the increased volume of fire calls from Libertyville. Libertyville will pay an annual assessment to cover its portion of the cost of staffing, operations and equipment at the Vernon Hills communications center.

The entire article can be found HERE.
