2-Alarm commercial fire in Evanston, 12-29-13 (final)

One parting post on last weeks commercial fire in Evanston, some interesting apparatus shots from Steve Redick.

  • Perhaps someone can comment on this, but the webmaster can’t remember another time (certainly in recent years) that all five Evanston engines were pumping at the same fire
  • Steve has the first shot we’ve seen of the Glenview/Northfield Truck 14/29 in service and labeled as Truck 29
  • Wilmette and Winnetka engines were also pumping at the scene, though Steve tells us that they were each substituted for Evanston engines that required fuel
  • an interesting note, with the inclusion of the Wilmette and Winnetka engines, this fire utilized Engines 21, 22, 23, 24 25, 26, & 28 … almost a complete sequence of numerical units …

Libertyville 2nd Alarm Fire 3-27-13 (pt 1)

The Libertyville Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the Jamaican Gardens North located at 14595 W. Rockland Road (Route 176). First companies found heavy smoke obscuring visibility on Route 176 and had a significant fire burning on the east end of the property near what was the retail store entrance. An attack was initiated and the fire was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm.

The business had closed to the public several years ago and was reportedly vacant. Libertyville Tower 461 and Engine 463 were deployed on the eastern side of the property. The fast moving fire quickly spread to additional buildings on the west side, where access was limited. Lake Forest Tower Ladder 421 was positioned on the northern driveway and Countryside Engine 412 was at the northwest corner. As the fire grew in intensity, the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm bringing additional units to the scene.

A special request was made for the Division 1 MVU out of Wheeling, but the unit was not deployed and subsequently released before the box was struck out.

The two tower ladders deployed master streams in addition to multiple hand lines and two multi-versals. Along with Libertyville Engine 463 and the Countryside engine, Lake Bluff Engine 517 and Knollwood Engine 44 were also pumping. The fire was struck out after roughly three hours.

Other fire departments with companies at the scene were Mundelein, North Chicago, and Lake Zurich with ambulances, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Gurnee with rescue squads, Highland Park with a truck, plus Waukegan, Deerfield, and Newport Township with engines.  Chief officers came from Countryside, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Bluff, and Lake Forest.

Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro were at the scene.

This is the first in a three part series covering this fire.

Glenview Box Alarm 11-3-12

The Glenview Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building in unincorporated Cook County at 3521 Central Road just before 10PM. Additional calls reported a fire in a third floor unit of the three-story apartment building and that a resident on the balcony might jump. Glenview Engine 7 was the first fire unit on the scene and found heavy fire pushing out of a third floor unit with a frantic tenant on the balcony. They upgraded the alarm to a box alarm.

As firefighters prepared for a rescue, they urged the occupant not to jump. Subsequently the resident escaped by climbing to the adjacent balcony and then dropping down one floor as firefighters were able to get a ground ladder in place.

The fire was knocked down quickly with some extension to the neighboring unit. Three Glenview engines were pumping at the scene and Truck 14 had their main to the roof. Mutual aid companies included Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1, Niles Engine, Ambulance, and Battalion 2, Morton Grove Engine 5 and Squad 4, Northbrook Truck 12, Wilmette Tower 26, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro went to the scene but both arrived after the fire had been knocked down. A few images have been posted from the scene.
