House fire in Wilmette, 7-30-16

This from Larry Shapiro:

Wilmette firefighters were called to 1826 Elmwood Avenue Saturday afternoon for a reported house fire. Police officers arrived first and advised that there was smoke showing. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire before fire companies arrived on scene. The first engine reported that the residents had exited the building and took a line to the second floor where they found drapes burning and a small fire though the entire house was charged with smoke. Winnetka firefighters rescued a cat that was in distress. The cat was given oxygen and taken to a local vet by Wilmette police officers.

One of the elderly residents suffered a burn to the hand and both were transported to Skokie Hospital. The fire was out quickly and before long some mutual aid companies were returned.

Units at the scene included Wilmette Battalion 26, Tower 26, Engine 27, plus Ambulances 26 and 27. Winnetka Engine 28, Glenview Engine 13, Skokie Squad 18, Northfield Truck 29, Evanston Truck 23, and Glencoe Ambulance 30 were the auto and mutual aid companies.

3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 5)

This from Steve Redick at the 3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows:

A distant northwest suburb of Chicago (Rolling Meadows). Fire in a large apartment complex … poor access to 3 sides of the building and difficult water supply. Extreme cold, heavy snow and ice cover. A resident jumped from the 3rd floor and did not survive. Fire destroyed a large portion of the building but was apparently held at a fire wall. Two elevated master streams, a deck gun, and several handlines were used. The aerial view gives an idea of the size and limited access to the fire building. Interesting to note the daylight photo is from a major fire within this same complex several years ago with a similar outcome, but in much better weather conditions. Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire, 1-26-14

Steve Redick took in a 2-11 Alarm fire last night at 5601 W Irving Park, having to contend with blowing snow and blistering cold conditions.

From the Chicago Tribune:

n extra-alarm fire in Portage Park left two people injured Sunday night.

The fire started after 8 p.m. in a restaurant on the first floor of a two-story building that has apartments on the second floor. Crews remained at the scene until after 11 p.m.

The two people injured suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital from the fire, at the corner of Central Avenue and Irving Park Road.

Police said the building was a total loss and everyone who lived there went to stay with relatives.

No firefighters were injured.

Prospect Heights Box Alarm, 11-21-13 (pt2)

Lengthy video from Thursday night’s house fire in Prospect Heights.

A gallery of photos is HERE.

This from Prospect Heights Deputy Chief Drew Smith (901) who worked as the interior chief at the fire:

Fire confined to second floor bedroom walk-in closet and office area. Closet was large enough to be its own room and office area was attached to walk-in closet. Multiple peaks of roof and vaulted and cathedral ceilings required extensive overhaul to check for fire spread. A total of five 1&3/4 hose lines were deployed:

Line 1 fire area inside closet

Line 2 fire area outside closet

Line 3 cover balance of second floor while ceiling opened to check for fire spread

Line 4 covered base of stair

Line 5 was used exterior

Terrain and a small stream to the west of this area made access to nearby Wheeling hydrants impractical. Long-distance LDH relay used. Normally, E9 would be attack pumper and E39 would start relay with a mutual-aid company extending the lay if necessary. Since AH E4 arrived first Squad 9 dropped its full bed then E39 finished the lay and pumped. We have a procedure for this, have used it many times, and it allowed us to obtain an ISO Class 3 even in our non-hydranted areas.

Due to the location of the house in relationship to the cul-de-sac (which has an island) and that the first engine and tankers could only get so far out of the way, Tower 12 could only access the roof at the A-B corner. Had there been much fire in the attic and roof areas we may have had a hard time with suppression.
