Chicago FD Turret Wagon History (pt7)

More on the history of turret wagons in the Chicago Fire Department.

This from Steve Redick

I was surfing through my collection..kinda bored cause I haven’t shot any fire photos in a while. I found this shot and thought I would share it because it’s relevant to our recent turret wagon photos. I am not sure of the source of this photo..might be a CFD negative..I do know it is not one I took. A few interesting things to see…truck 2 is using an old Mack magirus and you can see how they had to use a ground ladder to ascend to the main ladder…really gotta wonder what the designers were thinking there…and ya gotta wonder even more why the heck did CFD buy these??!!!!??? Prominently in the photo is the original “Big Mo”..turret wagon with lots of lines hooked up and sporting the CD paint job of white over blue. This thing changed paint schemes like a chameleon changes colors. The other detail I could pick out was what I remember as snorkel 4…it had a stripping ladder mounted on the boom, easily accessible from the basket. Snorkels weren’t just elevated master streams..before tower ladders they did lots of regular truck work too. The fire is downtown somewhere and I estimate the time frame as the mid 70s..anyone recognize this location??
This stuff is way cool…any comments will be shared!!
Steve

Palatine LODD Anniversary

Today marks the anniversary of the 1973 fire in Palatine that claimed the lives of three firefighters.

The Daily Herald has an article about the tragic event with photos from John Tobin and a short video with John.

Once the burning Ben Franklin five-and-dime store in downtown Palatine began to breathe in and out — the intensifying pressure preparing to blow out the windows and cave in the roof — that was the unmistakable sign for everyone to pull out.

But word quickly spread among the firemen that three of their brothers were unaware how dangerous the situation had grown.

Volunteer firefighters Warren Ahlgrim, Richard Freeman and John Wilson died in the Feb. 23, 1973, fire, their emptied air packs no match against a seemingly innocuous basement filled with few flames but plenty of carbon monoxide.

“Everyone wanted to save Johnny’s store, and nobody realized what kind of danger they were in,” former Palatine firefighter George Palmer said. “They were good at eating smoke, but had they not had their air packs, they probably would have come out sooner. It was the brave thing to do. But in retrospect, they shouldn’t have gone in.”

The main floor was smokey but clear of flames. Firefighter John Wilson, 40, owned the store and figured the furnace was the likely culprit.

He led Richard “Dick” Freeman, 25, and Warren “Auggie” Ahlgrim, 32, through the building he knew so well. To access the basement, they had to make their way through the long, narrow structure to a set of interior stairs.

Each man was equipped with an air pack. Based on the atmosphere, lung capacity and exertion, their oxygen might last anywhere from about 10 to 20 minutes.

At one point, Wilson came upstairs and got another line from Tobin’s dad, saying the fire was pretty much snuffed. That was the last time anyone saw him alive, as the fire, in fact, had spread.

Tobin and high school classmate Rick Cartwright both had their cameras at the scene and captured gut-wrenching shots of firefighter Howie Freeman working to put out the blaze, and later being held back from trying to rescue his son.

Crews eventually removed the bodies once the structure was safe enough to enter.

“We all stood there silently and respectfully while each of them were loaded into the ambulances,” said Tobin, who recently wrote a book about the fire. “The whole town was affected. I know I’ve never been the same.”

Wauconda Fatal Fire 2-19-13

This from Scott Peterson:

This was a Wauconda FPD Box alarm in the Lake Barrington Shores @ 612 Shoreline Rd on Tuesday morning Feb 19, 2013. This is a gated community. The dispatch was for smoke coming from the structure and a report of a person trapped. While enroute a medical alert alarm was also received indicating an activated smoke detector. Cos arrived, found smoke showing, pulled a line A very quick knock of the fire was made by the first-in Wauconda engine & a Lake Zurich engine that was also on-scene simulatneously on the auto-aid response. These crews knew of a person reported trapped and did an immediate search, quickly locating the victim. The victim was removed to a Nunda Rural ambulance that had been special called by the Wauconda Shift Commander while still enroute to the call, since the Nunda ambulance was very close to the call. Unfortunately, after arrival at the hospital, the victim was pronounced. The fire was held to the unit of origin with no extension to the other occupancies.
I arrived just after the FD had found and removed the victim on the primary search and here are a few pics of what the scene was.

This from Dennis McGuire, Jr.

This afternoon Engine Co. 62 pulled up to a 1 sty ord occupied auto repair shop with flames thru the roof. After crews gained entry the 22 Battalion requested a Still and Box alarm. A lot of overhaul and salvage after the fire was struck out.

More from Dan McInerney:

Here are some pictures from the still and box at 12300 S. Michigan Thursday afternoon.
They had a fire in a 1 story vacant autobody shop. It looks like it may have been an auto fire in the garage that ended up getting into the cockloft and going through the roof. Squad 5 was on a still in the high rise on 41st St. and the 22nd wanted an elevated stream which he didn’t have on the still, so he boxed it to get a tower ladder. E115 and E75 had a 2.5” each led out and made quick work of the fire. Neither TL34 or Squad 5 (who eventually made it there from 41st St.) worked their platforms. There was a lot of overhaul afterwards, and the 22nd Battalion asked to EFAO to notify the Building Department that this was a vacant and open building.
