Lake County Indiana Snorkel History

This from Wayne Stuart for #TBT:

Lake County Indiana fire departments had many Snorkels in service over the years. Gary had two in service but not at the same time, with the ALF coming from South Holland. The Griffith rig came from New Albany, Indiana, The Mattoon ALF also served in St. John and Shelby Indiana. Hammond ran two Snorkel companies at the same time, Snorkel 1, and Snorkel 2. Munster is located in Lake County but is in Mabas Div 24. The Crown Point rig came from Snohomish County, Washington who purchased it as a demo.

Prospect Heights Fire District history

This from Drew Smith:

Assuming this photo was taken in 1946: Pumper on the left is thought to be a 1926 purchased used in 1945. The original firehouse was built by volunteers in 1948 and in 1948 took delivery of a Ford/Darley which isn’t in the photo. Prior to having a firehouse, the rigs were stored in or behind a gas station (now gone – burned down in late 1970s) at the northwest corner of Elmhurst Rd (IL route 83) and Camp McDonald Road.

Garden Homes FPD history

This from Mike Summa:

Hello,
Here are some old pictures of Garden Homes Fire Department units.  They are from the 1970s.  One is a Dodge ambulance and the other is a 1970s Ford (X-Alsip squad truck) of unknown specifications.  Question– in the 1970s, Dodge ambulances were everywhere.  Now they are a rarity.  What happened?
Enjoy,
Mike S.

Historic 5-11 Alarm fire at the Ford City Shopping Center in Chicago, 4-2-68

This from Steve Redick:

April 2, 1968, just days before the riots erupted. A 5-11 and 3 or 4 specials for a fire in a massive building. The press coverage with the spectacular large format cover photo is sadly a thing of the past now. I have enclosed one of Dave Fornell’s images from that day.

A historical look at EMA/ESDA vehicle

This from Brian Murphy:

The following pictures were taken in the early and mid-1990s, and show various EMA and ESDA support vehicles. Most were either ‘home built’ by volunteers using part or whole former fire apparatus, or were donated former fire apparatus.  Many of these rigs had long second lives supporting FD and PD operations (and some are most likely still in service).  All pictures were taken with various small 35mm cameras (no digital, just old-fashioned photographs).

Comments and details on missing info are welcomed- enjoy!

A historical review …

From Steve Redick:

I cranked up the wayback machine for a long overdue session….Here’s a shot I believe I may have gotten from Chuck Madderom. A very rare image of the famous Snorkel Squad 3 operating with a Snorkel. I have no info on this location or date, but I LOVE this shot. This is the same rig, the original Snorkel, that was restored by ALF back in the 90’s. As many of you already know my dad was the captain of this company, and I did ride on one of the foam pressures a coupla times when I lived on Erie Street. That house is now gone too.

Classic Chicago fire scene photo with old Snorke

Here’s a good old fire fan photo. A still alarm 59th & Lafayette or Lasalle maybe even Perry … not sure now … mid 70’s … fire venting out the side and a truckman holding the door shut after forcing it while the engine leads out. My dad is visible in the white helmet on the right side of the photo. I rode in the 12th battalion buggy to this job. Typical fire in the old 12th battalion in those days.

Don’t remember the date for this next one, but I was coming home from some tavern and took this in. Probably about 0300 or so, I’m thinking the late 80s. This was a pretty well known restaurant if I remember right..can anyone add more info?

Let’s look at one more. Detroit lost 3 members in a major warehouse fire back in March 1987. This cartoon appeared in the paper the next day. I thought so much of it I bought a lithograph of it from the paper. This has always been a touching image for me.
