Chicago 3-11 Alarm Fire 6-24-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Hey guys,
Took in this job at 2450 S Central Park Ave. We saw the header from Roosevelt and Kedzie and arrived just after the Still companies. Fire was in an “E” shaped, 3-story apartment building. It appeared that the fire was in the cockloft above the 3rd floor, and it was knocked pretty good by the time the 2-11 companies staged. The fire was then rekindled and Commissioner Santiago requested the 3-11. Here are a couple shots I got, including one of the rescues, Squad 1A working in Sector 1, and Truck 32’s guys climbing the main to the roof.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm at 1433 S Kenneth 5-23-13 (pt 2)

This from Dan McInerney:

Some photos from this morning’s 2-11 at 1433 S. Kenneth. I got there late after the fire had been pretty much put out. Fire was in a 3sty, vacant apartment building, marked with the ominous red “X”. Fire was mostly throughout the 3rd floor. A tower ladder, 5-5-2’s Snorkel, a mulitversal and a few handlines were used. Both TL14 and E99 had mechanical issues – E117 coming in on the 2-11 was tasked with replacing E99, and TL5 was sent for TL14. Attached are a couple of scene shots and a few rig shots.
The first 3 show the Snorkel and multiversal on the north side of the fire building

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 5-23-13

This from Drew Gresik:

Hey guys,
I took in the 2-11 this morning at 1433 S Kenneth. I arrived roughly 50 minutes into the incident, and at the time, the incident was a Still and Box. After being on scene for about 10 minutes, 2-2-1 requested a 2-11 Alarm for the heavy fire pushing throughout. A lot of commissioners took this one in too, including 2-1-3, Commissioner Jose Santiago. This fire also occurred during shift change so there were a lot of firefighters switching into gear and moving rigs around. Another interesting note is that there was a LOT of spare rigs at this incident, companies with spares include: Towers 5 and 14, Trucks 26 and 36, and another Truck and Engine (I think Engine 109 and Truck 29). Thanks, enjoy the pics!

PS Tower 5 was using E252 and Tower 14 was using E248. (Tower 5 backed into the vacant lot in Sector 4 and took over master stream ops for Tower 14…Squad 2’s Snorkel was also used as a master stream). E279 was being used by Truck 26 and was also in the lot next to the towers.

A look at several old and new CFD firehouses

Steve Redick took advantage of some mild weather two weeks ago to visit some old and new firehouses in Chicago. He describes his journey:

… after leaving downtown I visited Eng 109’s old house. Not a bad shot considering the time of day.

I then ventured to the new house at 2343 S Kedzie where the companies exit the north doors. This place seems to have a hose tower mid structure and like the others is very sprawling.  All things considered I sure like the old house better but this is a much improved location for egress.

More information about the construction of and opening of this house and similar houses can be found HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE.

My last stop was old Engine 38…they really did a number on this place..Nice to see it taken care of but sad.

Chicago Still & Box Alarm 12-13-11

Hank Sajovic took in a fire yesterday in Chicago and provided several images and the following description:

On December 13, 2011 companies in the 14th Battalion responded to a still alarm for a fire at 4018 W. Cermak Rd.  Engine 38 arrived to find a fire in a 2-story brick apartment building measuring 25 x 60.  Truck 32, the second due truck, arrived and went to their assignment in the rear where they found the back of the structure heavily involved.  The captain notified the 14th battalion and with that report he requested a Box alarm.  Three lines were used to control the fire. The building was reportedly vacant and the fire was suspicious. The Office of Fire Investigations was requested to the scene.
