Inverness house fire goes to 3 alarms for Palatine Rural FPD

This from Larry Shapiro:

Homeowners at 14 Carnoustie Lane in Inverness called the Palatine Rural FPD and reported fire in the attic of their house shortly before 5PM on Tuesday. The large home is located in an area without hydrants roughly 1/2 mile from the fire station. First arriving companies attempted an interior attack and were forced to retreat and change to a defensive strategy. Heavy fire took hold of the attic and self vented through the roof as the alarm was escalated for additional units and water tankers. Two Palatine Rural firefighters from the initial attack company were subsequently transported to an area hospital.

A tanker shuttle was initiated as Palatine Tower 85 was put to work with an elevated master stream. The temperature as companies arrived was 94 degrees with a heat index near 100 degrees. A 2nd alarm was struck for additional tankers and then a 3rd alarm was requested when all companies in the staging area had been depleted.

Barrington 2nd & 4th Alarm fire 10-10-12

The Barrington Fire Department received a call near shift change this morning for a barn on fire at 21089 Ridge Road in Barrington Hills. First arriving companies found light smoke visible from the road and proceeded down the private drive with Quint 362, Tanker 362, and Engine 363. Engine 361 dropped 1,000′ feet of large diameter hose back to the street where two 3,000-gallon portable tanks were setup for a water supply. This area of Barrington Hills has no hydrants.

The three units in the driveway provided 3,500 gallons of water plus another 960 gallons from Engine 1 prior to the establishment of the tanker shuttle. A MABAS Box Alarm was requested immediately and the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm within minutes. Tankers from Long Grove, Palatine Rural, Round Lake, and Wauconda were due along with squads from Cary and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, trucks from Palatine, Elgin, and Mundelein, ambulances from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Deerfield, plus engines from Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich, Carpentersville, West Dundee, and Hoffman Estates.

The barn/garage structure that was burning contained hay, a boat, a fork lift, and several other mechanical devices in addition to various equipment and supplies. Several horses were safely evacuated to an adjacent pasture.

The alarm was upgraded to a 4th Alarm for tankers only which added Fox Lake, Prospect Heights, Bartlett, Nunda Rural, and Crystal Lake.

Tim Olk arrived at the scene shortly after the Box Alarm was requested, and Larry Shapiro arrived roughly 30 minutes later. Both have images which will post plus a video as they become available.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital with an ankle injury.

Countryside shows off new engine … and entertains many

The Countryside Fire Protection District has been conducting various training scenarios for several weeks now at 27693 Chevy Chase Road, in Mundelein. The homeowner donated the house for fire training in return for having it burned to the ground making way for the construction of a new home. We posted images from Dan McInerney HERE showing the new Rosenbauer engine and tender from US Tanker working.

As fire consumes the detached garage, the structure finally collapses. Larry Shapiro photo

Countryside invited local residents, neighboring fire departments and their families, CERT, and anyone else fascinated by big fires, to come and watch them burn the house and detached garage to the ground this past Sunday.

Larry Shapiro was one of those who attended and took the opportunity to work with the fire department to get some nice images of the new Rosenbauer Centurion engine with fire in the background. There is a gallery HERE with images and there will be an accompanying video as well.

Wauconda, Long Grove, and Libertyville sent tankers so that there was a continuous water supply at the scene. The tanker from Libertyville was the 1988, Pierce Dash, 1250/2500 which Countryside recently gave them. It has been re-lettered for Libertyville.

New tanker for Barrington last year

The Barrington and Countryside Fire Department took delivery of a Freightliner/US Tanker unit in 2009 that we have not yet featured. The chassis is a short, 2 door, M2106 Business Class model from Freightliner with a single rear axle. The Heritage model fire apparatus features a 750-GPM Darley pump and carries 2,000 gallons of water. Delivery photos can be seen HERE.

This fire department is not yet represented on the website but with any luck, that will be achieved by the fall of this year.
