Lake Zurich FD received a call at 4:34AM reporting a house fire at 23722 S. Lakewood Lane in unincorporated Lake County. FIrst in companies found a well-involved frame house. The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm and then a 2nd Alarm for additional tankers as the neighborhood has no hydrants. The house, which was reportedly vacant, was completely destroyed.

Companies on the alarm include four engines from Lake Zurich plus mutual aid engines from Mundelein, Palatine, Arlington Heights, and Fox River Grove. Trucks were from Wauconda and Buffalo Grove. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Libertyville sent ambulances, and tankers were from Long Grove, Cary, Fox Lake, Round Lake, Countryside, Palatine Rural, and Nunda. The Mess Canteen provided support services and chief officers were due from Wauconda, Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Palatine.

Homeowners at 14 Carnoustie Lane in Inverness called the Palatine Rural FPD and reported fire in the attic of their house shortly before 5PM on Tuesday. The large home is located in an area without hydrants roughly 1/2 mile from the fire station. First arriving companies attempted an interior attack and were forced to retreat and change to a defensive strategy. Heavy fire took hold of the attic and self vented through the roof as the alarm was escalated for additional units and water tankers. Two Palatine Rural firefighters from the initial attack company were subsequently transported to an area hospital.

A tanker shuttle was initiated as Palatine Tower 85 was put to work with an elevated master stream. The temperature as companies arrived was 94 degrees with a heat index near 100 degrees. A 2nd alarm was struck for additional tankers and then a 3rd alarm was requested when all companies in the staging area had been depleted.

Companies included engines from Palatine Rural, Palatine, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, Barrington, Lake Zurich, Carpentersville, Roselle, Elk Grove Village, Elk Grove Township, and Mount Prospect. Trucks came from Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Hoffman Estates, Wheeling, and Des Plaines. Tankers working included Palatine Rural, Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Roselle, Cary, Fox River Grove, Rutland-Dundee, Wauconda, and Crystal Lake. Departments with ambulances included Palatine, East Dundee, Crystal Lake, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Bartlett, and Arlington Heights.

South Barrington police say a mother and her two young children are safe after lightning struck their home this afternoon, starting a fire.
The incident took place around noon in the 0-100 block of Terra Vita Drive in South Barrington, police said—with the family inside—and initially was reported as an explosion.
He said the now-displaced family safely left the two-story, wood-and-brick house without help. No one was hurt but the house appears to be destroyed and has heavy damage to the attic, second floor and parts of the first floor, Deegan said.
Units were called to the scene and found smoke and fire from the roof. Companies initially made an interior attack but were reportedly forced to retreat due to insufficient water. At one point before all of the initial units arrived on-scene, there was some sort of explosion (possibly a smoke explosion) which blew out the front door. Fortunately, no one was injured as companies were preparing to make entry at that time. The alarm was upgraded to a box alarm and the attack went defensive. The house is located on a dead end street with no hydrants, just off Barrington Road.
The Still Alarm and Box Alarm brought: two engines and a 75′ quint from Barrington, a tower ladder from Palatine, tankers/tenders from Palatine Rural, Nunda Rural, Bartlett, Wauconda, and East Dundee. Additional engines came from Lake Zurich, Long Grove, Hoffman Estates, Fox River Grove, and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills. Ambulances came from Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove along with a squad from Cary.

Barrington Engine 2, the first engine on the scene, went into the driveway. Palatine Rural Tanker 36 arrived soon after and backed into the driveway to nurse Engine 2 until the tanker shuttle could be setup. One portable tank was dropped in front of Tanker 36 and two were dropped near Barrington Engine 1 just past the house.
These engines would eventually supply a master stream from the Palatine tower ladder and several hand lines in the rear sector.

The alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm for tenders after it became apparent that more units were needed to maintain a constant water supply. Tankers/tenders came from South Elgin, Crystal Lake, and Fox Lake. With the exception of Palatine Rural Tanker 36 which was stationary, the other tankers each made at least four runs each to refill and dump.

Three portable tanks were dropped and tied together on Barrington Road to provide for a quicker turnaround. Long Grove Engine 55 drafted from these tanks and supplied the palatine Rural tanker through a moderate lay of 5″ LDH.

After midnight on Sunday, the Lake Zurich Fire Department was notified of a fire that was burning on the back deck of a house at 11 Rosewood Drive in Hawthorn Woods. First arriving companies found a fire on the back deck that had communicated to the house, and that all of the residents had evacuated. This area of Hawthorn Wood is without hydrants and the fire was upgraded to a box alarm and then quickly to a 2nd alarm which brought a total of seven water tankers to the scene.
Wauconda’s tower ladder initially setup for an elevated master stream as the fire spread to the attic, but the water supply was insufficient and the defensive attack was conducted with hand lines.
Two portable tanks were dropped and a tanker shuttle was initiated to support the operations through a Lake Zurich engine. The fire consumed the entire rear section of the attic and roof with damage to several second floor rooms.

A large fire broke out just after 6PM last night at the Echo Lake Foods facility at 33102 South Honey Lake Road in Burlington, WI.
The fire building was one of a series of six buildings inter-connected at the facility that processes the following according to the company website:

As such, the facility has large amount of ammonia and liquid oxygen. As of 5AM Friday, (11 hours into the incident), NBC TMJ4 reported the following:
BURLINGTON – An eight-alarm fire has gone into its 13th hour of burning out of control Thursday morning at the Echo Lake Foods processing plant in Burlington.
“There still is active fire. It is not contained at this point,” said Fire Chief Richard Lodle during a 5 a.m. news conference Thursday which aired live on TODAY’S TMJ4.
More than 80 fire departments and 200 firefighters have given their assistance to the Burlington Fire Department.
The Burlington Police Department evacuated 10 homes and an apartment building, assisting about 50 people.
The fire broke out just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, and is at 33102 N. Honey Lake Road in Burlington, the site of Echo Lake Foods.
“The fire department discovered a significant fire upon arrival,” said Miller.
“The plant was successfully evacuated. There were no injuries to employees or, so far, to any firefighters.”
Hazardous materials teams came on scene because of ammonia and liquid oxygen tanks.
Meanwhile, Burlington’s fire chief is rotating in hundreds of firefighters from around southeastern Wisconsin, as far away as Milwaukee County.
“That’s why the large number of departments that we have called in, the large number of personnel that we’ve had…We’re not rotating out and rotating back in. When you rotate out, you go home.”
He also said they have not have much opportunity to enter the building and fight the fire from inside.
“The majority has been on a defensive mode. At this point, we’re attempting to do an interior attack, if we can get crews in.”
The company, founded in 1941, produces eggs and egg products, as well as other breakfast products. The factory has a long history in the Burlington area.
“This will affect the city greatly. We will attempt to help them rebuild and re-open the plant as soon as possible,” said Miller during the news conference.
“One of the largest employers…it’s going to be a loss of 300 jobs for a while.”

The fire went to a 5th Alarm (as high as MABAS Alarms are rated) and then 8 separate inter-divisional alarms were requested with strike teams or task forces requested from other MABAS Divisions in Wisconsin and Illinois. (some of the MABAS Divisions that responded include 101, 102, 106, 4, 5)
Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro went to the incident roughly four hours after the initial alarm and have a video and images from the scene that will be posted later. The size of the scene, the bitter cold weather, and the hazardous smoke restricted their access to two of the four sectors.
The incident is located in an area that required tankers to shuttle water to portable tanks, where engines drafted to feed the multiple master streams. Some of the streams had to shutdown fairly often as the three or four portable tanks that were inter-connected would be depleted before they could be refilled. There were at least three such water supply sectors being managed at the fire scene. Eventually, a drafting operation was setup from Echo Lake along Milwaukee Avenue. Two engines and a quint worked to complete this task for engines supplying a master stream in Sector D.
