South Barrington police say a mother and her two young children are safe after lightning struck their home this afternoon, starting a fire.
The incident took place around noon in the 0-100 block of Terra Vita Drive in South Barrington, police said—with the family inside—and initially was reported as an explosion.
He said the now-displaced family safely left the two-story, wood-and-brick house without help. No one was hurt but the house appears to be destroyed and has heavy damage to the attic, second floor and parts of the first floor, Deegan said.
Units were called to the scene and found smoke and fire from the roof. Companies initially made an interior attack but were reportedly forced to retreat due to insufficient water. At one point before all of the initial units arrived on-scene, there was some sort of explosion (possibly a smoke explosion) which blew out the front door. Fortunately, no one was injured as companies were preparing to make entry at that time. The alarm was upgraded to a box alarm and the attack went defensive. The house is located on a dead end street with no hydrants, just off Barrington Road.
The Still Alarm and Box Alarm brought: two engines and a 75′ quint from Barrington, a tower ladder from Palatine, tankers/tenders from Palatine Rural, Nunda Rural, Bartlett, Wauconda, and East Dundee. Additional engines came from Lake Zurich, Long Grove, Hoffman Estates, Fox River Grove, and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills. Ambulances came from Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove along with a squad from Cary.
Larry Shapiro was at the scene and submitted several images.
Barrington Engine 2, the first engine on the scene, went into the driveway. Palatine Rural Tanker 36 arrived soon after and backed into the driveway to nurse Engine 2 until the tanker shuttle could be setup. One portable tank was dropped in front of Tanker 36 and two were dropped near Barrington Engine 1 just past the house.
These engines would eventually supply a master stream from the Palatine tower ladder and several hand lines in the rear sector.
The alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm for tenders after it became apparent that more units were needed to maintain a constant water supply. Tankers/tenders came from South Elgin, Crystal Lake, and Fox Lake. With the exception of Palatine Rural Tanker 36 which was stationary, the other tankers each made at least four runs each to refill and dump.
Three portable tanks were dropped and tied together on Barrington Road to provide for a quicker turnaround. Long Grove Engine 55 drafted from these tanks and supplied the palatine Rural tanker through a moderate lay of 5″ LDH.
The fire eventually ran the full length of the attic and burned the entire roof off the large home before the fire was struck out.
Larry Shapiro has a large gallery of images. A video will follow.

This from Tyler Tobolt:
Crystal Lake Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 3217 Carrington Drive around 3:20pm . Engine 341 reported a very large header when responding, and with that information Crystal Lake Battalion Chief 330 requested a 2nd Alarm on Box Card #5-371. Shortly thereafter, Engine 341 arrived to find a 2-story home fully involved in all divisions and they went defensive mode. Within minutes Battalion 330 arrived and requested Tender Box #5-371 to the 5th alarm, and after requesting the tanker box he went on Engine Box #5-341 and upgraded that to the 5th Alarm also. Later they requested a MABAS Division 4 Interdivisional Box alarm for more crews. The main fire building was a 2-story 50 X 50 home which extended to three other houses. They also had a few small brush fires in the area due to embers. The main fire building did collapse. From the Northwest Herald:
CRYSTAL LAKE – Two firefighters are being treated for injuries after four houses caught fire this afternoon in a subdivision near Crystal Lake.
One house is still on fire on the 3200 block of Carrington Drive. Firefighters are proceeding with caution because of a ruptured gas line, Crystal Lake Battalion Chief Chris Olsen said.
Firefighters had not extinguished the fire the because of concerns over fumes from a ruptured gas line, Olsen said.
Nicor has just arrived on the scene to shut off the gas, at which point firefighters will be able to completely put out the fire, Olsen said.
Olsen said he didn’t believe the gas line was the cause of the blaze, and added firefighters have yet to determine why it started.
Residents who were inside the homes when the fires erupted were able to escape without injury. Olsen said the firefighters’ heat-related injuries are believed to be minor. The two firefighters were taken to Centegra Hospital-McHenry.
The affected houses include one that has already burned to the ground. The fire originated at 3217 Carrington Drive sometime after 3:30 p.m. After the blaze started, wind blew embers across the street leading to neighboring houses to catch fire.
Several area fire departments and the Red Cross were called to the scene to assist.
Terra Cotta Avenue and Valley View Road from Park Drive to Crystal Lake Avenue are closed because of the fire.

This from Scott Peterson:
This was a Wauconda FPD Box alarm in the Lake Barrington Shores @ 612 Shoreline Rd on Tuesday morning Feb 19, 2013. This is a gated community. The dispatch was for smoke coming from the structure and a report of a person trapped. While enroute a medical alert alarm was also received indicating an activated smoke detector. Cos arrived, found smoke showing, pulled a line A very quick knock of the fire was made by the first-in Wauconda engine & a Lake Zurich engine that was also on-scene simulatneously on the auto-aid response. These crews knew of a person reported trapped and did an immediate search, quickly locating the victim. The victim was removed to a Nunda Rural ambulance that had been special called by the Wauconda Shift Commander while still enroute to the call, since the Nunda ambulance was very close to the call. Unfortunately, after arrival at the hospital, the victim was pronounced. The fire was held to the unit of origin with no extension to the other occupancies.I arrived just after the FD had found and removed the victim on the primary search and here are a few pics of what the scene was.Scott

MABAS Division 5 encompasses McHenry County. There are 18 departments in the division and several had non-red apparatus over the years. Only three departments had fleets that were lime green and white or yellow; the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District, the Lake in the Hills station of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District, and the Woodstock Rural Fire Protection District (now part of the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District). According to the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District website, in October of 1993, the Woodstock Rural Fire Protection District, Woodstock City Fire Department, and Woodstock Rescue Squad merged together to form the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.
Eight other departments had red fleets, but at one time each had a unit that was painted differently. (Crystal Lake, Hebron, Harvard, the Marengo Rescue Squad, Richmond, Spring Grove, Union, and Woodstock City)
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department purchased a small rescue squad in 1982 that conformed to the Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications, one of which required that it be delivered painted lime green.
The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District had a brush truck which was blue in contrast to the rest of the fleet that was painted red.
The Harvard Fire Protection District and the Harvard Rescue Squad ran out of the same station. The Rescue Squad had an orange and white squad which was the only piece with this paint scheme.
The Richmond Fire Protection District had a rescue squad that was painted white.
The Spring Grove Fire Protection District had a squad unit and a tanker that were painted white.
The Union Fire Protection District ran a white Ford/Darley engine in 19__ which was the only lime green piece in the fleet.
The Woodstock City Fire Department purchased a Seagrave quad in 1967 that was painted white, and they also had a white brush truck, a 1969 Dodge W300/Welch 250/200.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire District had two stations in years past. The apparatus at the Lake in the Hills station was painted yellow. They had a 1968 IHC/Welch squad and there were two additional pumpers at the Lake In the Hills station that were painted chrome yellow; a 1972, IHC Cargostar-Alexis 750/750, and a 1975, IHC Cargostar-Bean 750/1000.
The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District changed their fleet from lime green/white to red/black.
When the Woodstock Rural Fire Protection and the Woodstock City Fire Department were separate entities, the rural apparatus was painted lime green & white.

Thanks to Scott Peterson for the tip on this one.
The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood FPD purchased Engine 1346 from the Nunda Rural FPD sometime last year. The vehicle is now painted Red.
Bill Friedrich adds:
This vehicle, which currently has a Spartan Monarch cab, was originally delivered with a Ford C-8000 cab that was destroyed in an accident in 1994. I believe RPI did the work on this rehab. A photo of the new engine at Hebron will be added when photographed.
