Towns discuss sharing fire station

The Niles Herald Spector has an article about discussions between Niles and Morton Grove to share a fire station:

The mayors of the villages of Niles and Morton Grove are discussing the possibility of combining resources to build a shared firehouse.

Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo says it might be cheaper for the two villages to build one new facility than to repair their existing structures. The fire departments would still operate separately. Przybylo said the discussions with Morton Grove Mayor Dan DiMaria are still in the very preliminary stages and nothing has been decided.

The Morton Grove Fire Department currently has two stations. Its headquarters are at the intersection of Lincoln and Callie avenues, with the second facility at 8954 Shermer Road. Niles has one [two] fire station[s, one] at Dempster Street and Cumberland Avenue, [and the other at 6611 Jarvis].

Przybylo said the headquarters of both fire departments are due for major repairs. Given the expenses involved, he argued, combining resources would make sense.

“If the village of Niles has to spend several million dollars to refurbish our house on Dempster, and Morton Grove has to refurbish its firehouse, maybe it would be better to build a new firehouse,” Przybylo said in an interview. “It would be better for the villages to take millions of dollars and build one firehouse that’s less expensive than two.”

He also argued because Niles and Morton Grove are close together, sending fire trucks from the same location makes sense. He noted the villages’ fire trucks already get dispatched into each other’s territory.

Among the issues to be resolved if the plan is to proceed would be choosing a site and figuring out how to fund the project. So far, Przybylo said, there hasn’t been much progress on the idea but he remains hopeful. Ryan Horne, the Morton Grove village administrator, said his community wouldn’t necessarily be averse to the idea

Working fire in Morton Grove, 8-28-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

While returning from the 3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, I was on the Edens Expressway when Morton Grove was dispatched to a reported house fire at  5845 W. Keeney. The response was upgraded to the Code 4 working fire before units arrived based on a report by police that there was a confirmed fire.

I arrived shortly after the first companies that had already made entry. The fire had burned through the first floor roof of the small split-level house but was extinguished quickly. Here are a few images from the scene.

House fire in Lincolnwood 1-19-13 (pt 2)

This from Steve Redick:

Took in a code 4 on the way home from the fao today…I arrived way late but got some nice rig shots. Fire building appeared to have a lot of stuff piled up inside..doesn’t look they were able to make much of an interior attack because of it. The location was the corner of Albion and Kilpatrick. It was nice to see the Evanston tiller set up..the Lincolnwood tower looks like it was positioned to be used, but not sure if it ever was utilized.

Glenview Box Alarm 11-3-12

The Glenview Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building in unincorporated Cook County at 3521 Central Road just before 10PM. Additional calls reported a fire in a third floor unit of the three-story apartment building and that a resident on the balcony might jump. Glenview Engine 7 was the first fire unit on the scene and found heavy fire pushing out of a third floor unit with a frantic tenant on the balcony. They upgraded the alarm to a box alarm.

As firefighters prepared for a rescue, they urged the occupant not to jump. Subsequently the resident escaped by climbing to the adjacent balcony and then dropping down one floor as firefighters were able to get a ground ladder in place.

The fire was knocked down quickly with some extension to the neighboring unit. Three Glenview engines were pumping at the scene and Truck 14 had their main to the roof. Mutual aid companies included Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1, Niles Engine, Ambulance, and Battalion 2, Morton Grove Engine 5 and Squad 4, Northbrook Truck 12, Wilmette Tower 26, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro went to the scene but both arrived after the fire had been knocked down. A few images have been posted from the scene.

Two suburban garage fires 2-16-12

The Rolling Meadows Fire Department …

responded to 2019 Martin Lane this morning and companies found a fully involved detached garage. They were able to get water on the fire and knock it down within minutes. Rolling Meadows Engines 15 and 16 were on the scene along with both ambulances, the 15th Battalion, and Squad 15. Mutual aid engines came from Palatine and the Palatine Rural Fire District, Arlington Heights came with an ambulance and a tower ladder, and the 7th Battalion from Palatine Rural was also on-scene.

The Glenview Fire Department

received multiple calls reporting a fire in an attached garage at 1755 Monterey Court this afternoon. Engine 7 was the first unit on the scene and had heavy smoke filling the entire driveway plus coming out the front door. They took a line in the front door to hit the fire from inside the house while a second exterior line went up the driveway. All four Glenview engines, two ambulances, the truck, and Battalion 6 were on the scene with Morton Grove Engine 5, Prospect Heights Squad 9, and Northbrook Tower 12 mutual aid. Glenview companies made a quick stop and the mutual aid companies were released shortly after they arrived.

Park Ridge 2-11 & EMS Box Alarm 2-12-12

Park Ridge apartment fire Thames Parkway 2-12-12

Park Ridge Engine 35 and Tower 36 were in front of the building. The tower was used as a stand-pip for the attack line. Larry Shapiro photo

Shortly before 11AM this morning, the Park Ridge Fire Department received an automatic fire alarm in a four-story apartment building at 500 Thames Parkway. While in route, they received a phone call reporting a fire on the top floor. The alarm was immediately upgraded to a working fire, and upon arrival to a MABAS Box Alarm when Battalion 35 saw the fire blowing out of the top floor unit in the rear.  The building has three floors with 10 units per floor. A 2nd Alarm was requested within minutes of the Box Alarm and an EMS Box Alarm was struck as a precaution due to the number of occupants.

The building is without a stand-pipe system, and Park Ridge companies took a 2 1/2-inch high-rise pack in to the building which was fed to the basket of Tower 36 through a top floor window. They made entry into the fire unit with this line and darkened the bulk of the fire.

The fire was contained to the unit of origin with minor damage to the neighboring apartments.

After the fire had been extinguished, hot spots lingered in several areas of the mansard roof before companies had a chance to tear it apart and get at everything inside. Larry Shapiro photo

Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro took in the fire and have submitted images from the scene.
