Schererville Indiana (MABAS 207) 4th Alarm May 30, 2013, Departments from both Indiana and Illinois (MABAS 24) responded. The fire was located in a 3-story apartment building. Fire was throughout the 3rd floor and extended down to the 2nd floor. Crews made an initial interior attack and found the fire in the attic space extending rapidly. Fire operations soon switched to a defensive mode with 2 tower ladders, 1 ladder pipe, and numerous exterior handlines operating. After the bulk of fire was extinguished, an interior attack was mounted again. Crews continued in the offensive mode through the rest of the operation.

Shortly before 11AM this morning, the Park Ridge Fire Department received an automatic fire alarm in a four-story apartment building at 500 Thames Parkway. While in route, they received a phone call reporting a fire on the top floor. The alarm was immediately upgraded to a working fire, and upon arrival to a MABAS Box Alarm when Battalion 35 saw the fire blowing out of the top floor unit in the rear. The building has three floors with 10 units per floor. A 2nd Alarm was requested within minutes of the Box Alarm and an EMS Box Alarm was struck as a precaution due to the number of occupants.
The building is without a stand-pipe system, and Park Ridge companies took a 2 1/2-inch high-rise pack in to the building which was fed to the basket of Tower 36 through a top floor window. They made entry into the fire unit with this line and darkened the bulk of the fire.
DesPlaines Engine 62 was in the rear and was instructed to put their deck-gun to work to knock down exterior fire on the mansard roof.
Morton Grove Engine (Quint) 4 was used as the first aerial device in the rear.
The fire was contained to the unit of origin with minor damage to the neighboring apartments.
Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro took in the fire and have submitted images from the scene.

Additionally, Steve created a video from the scene.

The Schaumburg Fire Department received an automatic fire alarm before 6AM on Saturday which was follow by several 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke in the building at 1234 Valley Lake Drive. Engine 54 was first on the scene and connected to the standpipe system. Firefighters found residents in the lobby area and on upper floor balconies of the 7-story building. When they made the fire floor, they encountered heavy smoke and had to locate the unit that was on fire.
The 85-year old resident of the apartment that was on fire received burns to to her chest and was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates before being transferred to the burn center at Loyola University Hospital.
Two lines were deployed and companies were able to confine the fire to the unit of origin. The alarm went to a 2-11 with a special call four five additional ambulances as a precaution. Schaumburg firefighters retrieved multiple residents that took refuge on their balconies to escape the smoke.
Larry Shapiro went to the scene and submitted several images.
Mutual aid companies with trucks were Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Itasca, and Mount Prospect. Engines came from Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Palatine Rural, Buffalo Grove, Barrington, and Bloomingdale. Carol Stream was due with their two-piece squad company and ambulances on the scene were from Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Roselle, Bensenville, Wheeling, and Glenside. Chief officers responded from Arlington Heights, Palatine Rural, and Itasca.
The Chicago Tribune has an article HERE.
One woman who suffered second-degree burns on her chest was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates from the apartment where the fire started, Anderson said. The woman, age 85, was considered in critical condition and later transferred toLoyola University Medical Center for further treatment because of the severity of her injuries, said Schaumburg Battalion Chief John Steele.
Firefighters found heavy smoke on the fourth floor, but were able to keep the fire from spreading to the fifth floor, Anderson said. The fire started in the bedroom of to the injured woman’s apartment, and was largely confined to the apartment, but the fourth floor was damaged enough that residents in the 15 apartments there would not be able to return today, and were being helped with housing by the Red Cross, Anderson said.

The Evanston Fire Department received multiple calls for smoke in the area of Callan Avenue and Howard Street around 7PM on Thursday. The dispatchers upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 after receiving numerous calls reporting heavy fire in a building in the 100 block of Callan Avenue with people trapped. Evanston Engine 22 was the first to arrive at the three-story, brick, courtyard building and found heavy fire occupying the rear porches from the ground floor to the top. The officer upgraded the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm immediately.
Searches for trapped occupants were negative and the fire was contained quickly, but not before it extended into second and third floor units.
Evanston Now has an article HERE which states:
Sixteen residents were left homeless after fire broke out about 7 p.m. Thursday in a apartment building at 116 Callan Ave. in Evanston.
Fire Chief Greg Klaiber says the first fire companies to arrive found flames coming from second and third floor balconies at the rear of the building.
He says a mutual aid box alarm was sounded, bringing all Evanston fire units and a ladder truck from Skokie to the scene.
Klaiber says all residents of the five occupied apartments in the building managed to escape the building on their own. But the fire spread to second and third floor units in the building, causing extensive damage.
One elderly female occupant was treated on the scene for shortness of breath but was not transported. No firefighters were injured.
The fire was extinguished and struck at about 8 p.m. The chief says the cause is still under investigation.
Police victim’s assistance and American Red Cross workers were on the scene to find temporary housing for the building’s residents.
Tim Olk arrived after a quick knock down by Evanston companies and submitted several images from the scene.
Tim has more photos in a gallery HERE.

The Glenview 9-1-1 center received calls for a fire at 2700 Summit Drive during a heavy storm after 10PM Sunday evening. The initial response included Glenview Engines 6 and 13, Battalion 6, Ambulance 6, Glenview Truck 14 which was using Engine 8R, and Northfield Truck 29. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 upon arrival which brought Glenview Engine 8, Glenview Ambulance 7, Northbrook Truck 12, and Morton Grove Squad 4. Northbrook Truck 12 was returning from a Code 4 fire in their district when this alarm came in.
Both trucks put their main aerial to the roof and the fire was quickly contained to the area of origin.
Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro went to the scene although there wasn’t much to see after the quick knock-down. Larry has a small gallery HERE.

Steve Redick took in a Still & Box Alarm last night at 3636 Grenshaw. The fire originated on the back porches of a three-story 6 flat unit which appeared to be vacant. Engine 107 was the second engine in and was ordered to the rear where they opened up with their deck gun to knock done the bulk of the fire before taking a hydrant at the end of the alley.
Steve has a small gallery HERE.
