Niles Fire Department news
Jul 20
Excerpts from the Journal-topics.com:
Niles trustees approved the donation of a 1996 fire engine to Ford Heights at the July 10 village board meeting. The engine was taken out of service in 2015 when the fire department purchased a new one. The last time the village tried to sell a used engine of a similar vintage, a village memo and Fire Chief Marty Feld said it took three years to sell — and sold for scrap for less than $3,000.
Ford Heights has just one working fire engine, meaning if that engine goes out of service, other communities must be called upon to respond to any fire related calls. The Niles engine will become Ford Heights’ second engine. The donation is being coordinated through the state fire marshal’s office.
Another new engine Feld hopes to purchase this fall would cost somewhere between $600,000 and $700,000. It would leave the Niles Fire Dept. with two engines in reserve, one 2013 and one 2001. Those vehicles are used if frontline units are out for repairs, or if off-duty firefighters are called in to respond or fill stations.
Vehicles are generally replaced on a 20-year cycle.

After 18 years of serving the Village of Tinley Park and surrounding communities, this week, we bid farewell to Engine (Shop ID) 0020. This engine was purchased as one of three “triplets” in 2000. The other two of the three triplets are still in service with the TPFD. This engine served as E201 out of station 1, then was moved and served as E202 out of station 2 where it was renumbered to E47 with the MABAS 24 numbering change. Most recently, it was moved back to station 1 as E46 once station 46 began running a dedicated engine company out of it along with the truck company. It will continue to serve now with the Summit Fire Department who purchased it from us.

Excerpts from CommandFireApparatus.com:
The Latrobe Freewill Hose Company 3 & 4 of Latrobe, Pennsylvania was in search of a new unit last year. When the unit they had initially looked at was sold, they turned to Command Fire Apparatus.
“We completely stand behind purchasing our 2001 Seagrave Pumper from Command Fire. Working with Glenn couldn’t have gone better,” said Captain Mike Skapura. “The company was extremely attentive to our needs when we found bits and pieces that we were displeased with,” continued Skapura.
Though the unit came with a handful of problems, the department took advantage of the 90 day warranty.
“The few problems we encountered with our Seagrave were handled with a high sense of efficiency,” expressed Captain Skapura. “We know that if and when we need a new unit, Command Fire Apparatus is where we’ll be purchasing from.”
