Several contributors travelled to Division 5 (McHenry County) yesterday and photographed the apparatus and four fire stations of the McHenry Township FPD as well as Richmond and the three stations in Woodstock. As this represents eight stations and just under 50 pieces of apparatus, it will take a few days before the departments are posted to the site. Thanks are in order to Hank Sajovic, Karl Klotz, Bill Friedrich, Larry Shapiro and George Reichardt for braving the heat. Most of all though our thanks go out to the personnel at all three departments for being so helpful, outgoing, and patient to accommodate the group so that everything could be documented.

Niles Ambulance 3
Jul 15
The site has been missing a few images from Niles (Division 3) and Karl Klotz has submitted one of these; Ambulance 3’s rig. It is a 2007 IHC 4400/Medtec Type I MICU.
Frankfort updates
Jul 14
Karl Klotz has provided two updated photos representing Frankfort FPD Battalion 7 and Brush 4. Both are new rigs. The battalion runs out of station one and as you might guess, the brush unit is in station 4. Frankfort is in Division 19.
Hinsdale is now on the site
Jul 10
Another addition to Division 10 is the Hinsdale Fire Department. They are a single station department with 26 career personnel serving the town of Hinsdale which covers roughly 4.64 square miles in DuPage County. They run two ambulances, three engines, and a tower ladder. Hinsdale has always had a rather unique color scheme shared in this area by only Carol Stream which is also in DuPage County. They both had bright yellow apparatus with black roofs. While Carol Stream changed to black over red several years ago, Hinsdale still maintained their entire fleet of suppression vehicles in the black over yellow colors until recently. In 2008, they received their newest unit, a Spartan/Rosenbauer/Metz Raptor tower ladder which was painted black over red. There is one other department locally with this unique aerial device, and that’s the Countryside Fire Protection District in Division 4 (Lake County). While both of these towers are on short, single axle chassis, the Countryside unit is on an HME chassis and has a white roof.
Thanks to Karl Klotz for providing all of the Hinsdale images.
Orland is on the site
Jul 9
The Orland Fire Protection District which covers the towns or Orland Park and Orland Hills has been added to the site thanks to Karl Klotz. All six stations can be viewed along with the in-service and reserve apparatus. Karl has one ambulance (#1) yet to photograph before the listings are complete. Orland runs Pierce aerials and the engines are either Pierce or Darley. All of the ambulances were built by Road Rescue and are Type III units on Ford E450 chassis. The newest engines and ambulances were delivered in 2008.
Orland has several specialty units as well. They have a haz mat unit, small squad, TRT, dive, communications and a fire investigation unit. A favorite unit for many native Chicagoans is the 55′ Snorkel which is no longer in active service. It is reportedly used for public relations activities and lives at Station 6.
Another department in Division 24 has been added to the site thanks to Karl Klotz. Minus the brush rig, the entire Flossmoor fleet is now available to view HERE. Flossmoor was one of the first area departments to embrace the maximum height cab extensions beginning in 1990 with an early Pierce Lance followed in 1994 by an even larger cab from HME on a unit built by Luverne. Both of these units featured fully enclosed top mounted pump modules. Their newest engine also features a raised roof cab from HME although it is shorter and lower than the earlier model. This 2000 model year Central States engine also features a top mount pump panel but it is not enclosed within the cab. Rounding out their suppression fleet is a 1996 custom Sutphen 70′ mid-ship tower ladder. All of their apparatus are painted black over red.

updates coming soon!
Jun 22
It’s been several days since there has been a new posting to the site, but travel and other duties have grabbed all of the available time. Within the next few days though, several updates will be completed. Contributors have been busy photographing apparatus and it takes a bit of time to collate everything and place all the images into the proper spots. Here though is some of what is coming:
- Jack Connors has submitted several CFD updates as well as the Mundelein Fire Department apparatus
- Karl Klotz has sent some updated CFD apparatus images plus he has updated photos of several CFD houses
- Hank, Karl, Bill and Larry (along with George Reichardt and Jeff Schielke) visited all 10 Naperville stations last week and the entire department will be updated and completed by the end of this week
- Larry has several Palatine and Rolling Meadows apparatus shots that are missing from the site. These were taken on-scene at a large commercial fire last Friday
Bedford Park is on the site
Jun 13
The Bedford Park Fire Department in Division 21 has three stations. They have a Pierce department with three engines including a brand new 2010 Impel. They also have a tower ladder and a Snorkel. Bedford Park was home to one of the first Pittman Snorkel units on a GMC chassis for the fire service. The first Snorkel was in Chicago, retrofitted by the shops on a truck that was bought by and built for the streets department and then ‘obtained’ by the fire department. Bedford Park’s original Snorkel is stored in town and evidently in need of restoration. They have since had several Snorkel aerials including the most recent which was built by Pierce in 1997. All three Bedford Park Snorkels can be seen in the header of the department website HERE. They have a well written and very informative history on their site that’s worth a read. Bedford Park also has the regional Haz Mat Unit which uses a 1991 Pierce Lance with the early series Lance cab. Thanks to Karl Klotz for supplying the images.
