McHenry FPD updates

Karl Klotz, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro visited all five stations of the McHenry Township FPD last week to update the site. In addition to new units, this is one of many area departments that is in the process of renumbering apparatus.

Among the new and updated units photographed;  there were three ambulances, two engines, two tenders, and a new boat.

  • McHenry went from a one tender department to a three tender department with a tender in all but the downtown station. The new twin 3,500-gallon tenders were built by US Tanker on IHC 7500 chassis with extended cabs.
  • Tender 1272 is at Station 2, and Tender 1274 is at Station 4.

Two Pierce engines have been put into service since our last update and one was moved. The new engines are on the Impel XM chassis instead of the Velocity.

  • These are assigned as Engine 41 at Station 1 and Engine 43 at Station 3.
  • Engine 44 at Station 4 was formerly Engine 10 at Station 1.
  • There are two more engines on order, each coming in six month intervals.

The ambulance fleet has changed for the most part since our last visit.

  • Another new ambulance is a 2012 Type I AEV at Station 1, running as Ambulance 51.
  • Ambulance 52 at Station 2 is a 2010 Osage Type I that has also been added since our last update.

Fatal house fire in Tinley Park 7-5-13

The Chicago Tribune reports that a house fire in Tinley Park today claimed the life of an elderly woman:

An elderly Tinley Park woman died in a fatal fire Friday morning at a condo-complex on the 6200 block of Pine Trail Lane in Tinley Park, officials confirmed.

The fire started inside the woman’s second-floor bedroom, according to Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Slepski. Its cause remains under investigation, according to a Tinley Park Fire Department news release.

At last check, village officials did not know the woman’s name, according to village spokesman Jason Freeman, but did describe her as “elderly.” Another woman in the next door condo unit was successfully evacuated from the second floor, officials said, but she sustained no injuries.

A neighbor who lived downstairs from the woman told the Tribune he called 911 after a landscaper rang the doorbell because he saw smoke filtering through the upstairs window.

The landscaper, Luis Calderon with Nogas Landscaping, said he was passing by and saw the smoke this morning. He informed a different homeowner, who he said rang the doorbell. The woman who lived upstairs didn’t answer, he said.

Village officials said this afternoon that the woman died at the scene.

Down memory lane …

From Steve Redick:

Since it seems I’ll never see a fire again as they have been virtually eliminated here in Chicago I got sentimental and wanted to share some classic old images I came across….
  • The first is a rare shot of a smoke ejector working .. this is way before the recent rebuilds … you can see the smoke issuing from the top of the unit where the fan discharge is …
  • Next one is squad 2 … (not FMS 2) but they were reusing the old squad rigs when we had a squad in each district and they only had a few of the Ford Welch units
  • A shot of truck 25 setting up a ladder pipe … can’t recall the location but I seem to remember it being a Chinese restaurant of some kind
  • Niles Truck 440 … this was in the 6300 block of Touhy, and ironically enough I took this photo standing on the front lawn of the house I would eventually buy …
  • Elk Grove Village, classic tiller .. gotta love a Mack Pirsch anything!!
  • Niles, IL buggy … I always liked the two Borealis lights, but these were the newer model, not the old classics we are all thinking of … cool none the less
  • Not sure if I took this last one .. (might be Gordon Nord’s photo) … old Brookfield Seagrave engine
