Lake Forest firefighters responded to a reported basement fire Tuesday afternoon at 180 W. Laurel Avenue. The first arriving unit reported nothing showing from the outside, but found smoke upon entering the large house. Within roughly 9 minutes, the alarm was upgraded to a working still alarm, a MABAS Box Alarm, and then a 2nd Alarm as smoke began escaping from the eaves.
There was a hydrant at the end of the long, curvy driveway. The first-due Lake Forest engine and the Knollwood quint both made the driveway … with some difficulty. Fire was located in the void space beneath the first floor and then in some walls on the second floor.
The alarm was upgraded to a 3rd Alarm for additional companies to standby in the event that the fire got away from the companies working inside. The fire was contained before long without doing extensive damage to the structure of the house. Temperatures were hovering just above 0 with a negative windchill.
Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk took it in.
Companies at the scene were:
- Lake Forest with two engines, an ambulance, a tower ladder, and chief officers

The Waukegan Fire Department has been added to the listings in MABAS Division 4. The last department in the county to be added is the largest. Waukegan has five stations with more than 28 pieces of rolling stock. All houses have an ALS rescue unit, and four run engine companies. Waukegan Station 4 staffs a 105′ Pierce quint alongside Rescue 1644.
Waukegan provides a bomb squad with containment vessel for Lake and McHenry Counties out of an annex building at Station 1. They also have a dive unit, haz mat unit, a large squad, and a 6×6 ARFF at the Waukegan Regional Airport.
They have Seagrave and KME engines, a Pierce and Seagrave aerial, plus Medtec, Wheeled Coach, and Taylor Made ambulances.

Good morning and Happy New Year. Here is x-Highland Park FD Engine 31, now in service in Hamilton Township, NJ. Mike Martinelli shared this with us.
This is the first of many posts in a new series entitled Where are they now ... where we will follow the re-assignment of area fire department apparatus that finds new life in a new home.
From Bill Friedrich:
As it turns out, the whereabouts of this unit are as yet unknown.
The Community Fire Company, of New Ringgold, PA owns a Seagrave engine which was NOT originally from Palatine, IL.
Departments in MABAS Division 10 are featured in this next installment of The Color of Fire Trucks series.
The Clarendon Hills Fire Department runs with apparatus that is painted white over a bright yellow. They currently have a fleet of four units with these colors.
The Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District currently runs with red and white apparatus. Their newest unit is solid red, and with this purchase they will retire one of the last of their lime-green apparatus which dominated their fleet for many years.
Romeoville had a white light-duty rescue by E-ONE. Most of these units were delivered lime green as per the DOT spec.
Many years ago, the McCook Fire Department had red apparatus, then they switched to bright yellow for several years before the fleet was changed again to red and white.
