Zion 3rd Alarm Fire & Haz Mat Box 6-17-12 (update)

More on the fire in Zion on Sunday at Maine Plastics.

The was in the outside yard of a recycling facility that bands various paper goods and material into large bundles for reuse by others. According to the company web site:

Maine Plastics is a buyer, seller, and recycler of plastics, metals, paper scrap, and uncommon materials. We also offer baling, grinding, material seperation, metal detection and removal services at our plants nationwide.

First arriving companies were on the scene around 7AM, and the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. They also requested the Quad 2 Foam Unit (a 1992 Oshkosh T-3000) out of Round Lake. Approximately an hour later, a 2nd Alarm was struck for additional companies. The Winthrop Harbor and Zion trucks were deployed with elevated master streams on the north side of the facility, and the Antioch tower ladder was setup to the south. When the ARFF arrived, the Zion truck was repositioned and the water supply for Winthrop harbor was re-directed to the ARFF.

The Zion Fire Department along with mutual aid companies responded to a fire early this morning at 1817 Kenosha Road. Upon arrival, they found a substantial fire behind the large manufacturing facility located at that address. Fox Lake responded with a squad on the fire box and a tanker on the tanker box. Libertyville also sent a squad on one of the fire box alarms.

Since the local water main was not sufficient to supply the amount of water being deployed at the fire, a tanker shuttle was initiated where up to three tankers could simultaneously dump into a series of four portable tanks that were tied together. Here, tankers from Antioch, Fox Lake, and Beach Park discharge water into the free-standing tanks that are being used by a Newport Township engine and a Lake Bluff engine who are supplying two of the master streams. Larry Shapiro photo

Eight tankers were shuttling water including Antioch, Beach Park, Bristol (WI), Fox Lake, Grayslake, Lake Villa, Newport Township, and Round Lake.

Newport Township’s new squad ready for service

Newport Township FPD Mack MR Saulsbury heavy rescue with crane

Newport Township is nearing completion of the work required to place this 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue into service. Lt. Rob Schreiner photo

The Newport Township FPD purchased a used 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue with an 8-ton, 33-foot, National Crane from the Lutherville VFC in Maryland in March. The previous post is HERE with photos of the original black and white color scheme. Newport Lt. Rob Schreiner has supplied us with photos and information about the new Squad 1455.

It will be housed at Station 2 on Delaney Road, as it is too tall for the headquarters station. The new squad will replace both of the R-Model Mack units at Station 2, Squad 1455 and 1456, and will be utilized as a second rig for extrications, fires, and SRT responses.  Squad 1455 will provide additional support  to their structure fire responses which the previous units could not fulfill.  The new unit has air-packs and appropriate squad items for fires, plus the 30-KW generator, and an extensive amount of ground lights.

Newport Squad 1455 was purchased from the Lutherville VFD in Baltimore County Maryland who retired this unit in 2008. Lt. Rob Schreiner photo

Along with the new paint scheme, Squad 1455 had some minor mechanical issues which were corrected,  corrosion was repaired, radios and an opticom were installed, and work is underway to outfit the tools from the existing rigs.  Some additional striping and decal work needs to be completed as  well. The trench box that was stored on the old squad will be moving to a small trailer and will be pulled by a pickup truck. The new squad, including paint, lettering, and repairs to present, has been donated to the department by two generous people, with no cost to the department for this upgrade.

Both of the R-Model Mack squads will be declared surplus and sold.
