This from Larry Shapiro:
Two workers from a private contractor were in a sanitary sewer on Route 53 west of Old McHenry Road near noon today when they were overcome by fumes which rendered them unconscious. The Long Grove Fire Department responded to the incident which is less than a mile from their station and found a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy assisting another individual with trying to pull one worker through the manhole.
Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Buffalo Grove responded with suppression companies and technical rescue personnel, Deerfield and Palatine Rural went to the scene with ambulances. Firefighters on air were able to get into the sewer and retrieve the men within minutes. Both were revived and transported to an area hospital. All personnel involved underwent a decon due to the noxious gas and substance in the sewer. The deputy sheriff was also examined on the scene.

Sunday evening at roughly 9:15PM, the Northbrook Fire Department received a call reporting fire in the home at 1337 Walters Avenue. As units went en-route, the police reported a working fire at the scene, and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 (working fire) before the first fire company arrived. In addition to units from Northbrook, Glencoe responded with an engine, Northfield with a truck, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52.
Fire was in a second floor bedroom and communicated into the attic before venting through the roof. A Box Alarm was requested for additional companies to cover the three Northbrook stations. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were at the scene. The fire was contained within 25 minutes. The residents, who were home when the fire broke out, all evacuated safely.
Several images of the apparatus were submitted by Larry, and we expect to see shots showing the fire from Tim, since he arrived right behind the Northbrook companies.
The heavy storms that went through the area Tuesday night and Wednesday morning dumping a huge amount of water in many suburbs caused widespread road closures and flooding. Area fire departments were called to help motorists stranded in standing water as well as residents that could not leave their homes.
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department requested a MABAS Box Alarm from within divisions 1 and 4 for swift water rescue techs and boats to help residents on St. Mary’s Parkway between Raupp Boulevard and Lincoln Terrace. Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville and Mount Prospect responded with techs and boats in addition to techs from a handful of other neighboring departments.
Larry Shapiro submitted images and a video (forthcoming) from the Buffalo Grove incident.

The Daily Herald has an article describing awards receive by Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters at a recent board meeting. The firefighters were honored for rescuing residents from a house fire in Prairie View on March 7, 2013.
While Fernando Meir was patrolling the parking lot at Stevenson High School on March 7 he saw smoke, went to the home in unincorporated Lake County, dropped on his knees to avoid the smoke and reached family members trying to escape.
The Apple Hill Lane home near Lincolnshire, owned by Jim and Renee McClure, had a raging fire that day as they and three others were trapped on a second-floor porch with no staircase. Renee McClure needed everyone’s help since she was unable to move and on a ventilator due to advancing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
While Meir kept talking with first-responders on a cellphone, the firetrucks sped to the scene, providing a dramatic exchange as the fire raced closer to them. During those same moments, another Stevenson employee, Barry Orgeron, also worked to save the family while Dedra Cummins, who lives nearby, was on her knees attempting to save a family dog.
The three rescuers, along with members of the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics who helped the family to safety, were honored Saturday after an emotion-packed presentation that included those frantic calls to 911. The presentation was made at fire station No. 53 in Vernon Hills before the monthly Fire District Board meeting.
Those receiving certificates of honor were Meir, Orgeron and Cummins as well as district firefighters Jason Stockton, Tom Burrs, Matt Bacarrella, Kyle Schrems, John McWilliams, Ryan Shay, Ron Swidler and Scott Rhodes.
thanks Chris
Lincolnshire haz mat 4-23-13

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD received a call just after 9AM on Tuesday from the Lincolnshire Marriott Hotel reporting some type of chemical accident with several employees not feeling well. First arriving units noted a chemical smell and conducted a preliminary investigation as the alarm was upgraded to bring area hazardous materials (haz mat) techs to the scene from Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, and Countryside departments.
No employees were transported to the hospital, and after learning the specific data about what were reported to be various cleaning products, an entry team entered the hotel’s service area and collected the product into two storage containers which were sealed for removal by a licensed waste hauler.
All firefighters and equipment that entered the hot zone were then decontaminated which brought the incident to a close.
Larry Shapiro submitted several images from the scene.

Shortly after 8PM Wednesday evening, a caller reported a basement fire at 884 Swan Boulevard in unincorporated Lake County. The area off of Inverrary Road west of Milwaukee Avenue is covered by the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD, and there is only one point of access into and out of the subdivision.
First arriving units were greeted by the homeowner outside the unit with severed burns to both feet. They reported heavy smoke pushing out of the center unit and upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 (working fire) and then immediately to a Box Alarm. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods had two engines, a quint, three ambulances and two chief officers on the scene. Mutual aid with engines came from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Northbrook. Squads came from Prospect Heights (RIT) and then from Loncolnshire-Riverwoods Station 51. Deerfield was at the scene with a truck, and additional ambulances came from Lake Zurich and Wheeling. Chief officers came from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Deerfield, and Mundelein.
Lincolnshire-Riverwoods paramedics transferred patient care of the homeowner to the Wheeling ambulance, which transported to Condell Hospital. Two lines went into the fire unit and an additional line was pulled to an exposure unit, while Buffalo Grove firefighters went to the roof to ventilate. The fire was stopped quickly and contained to the unit of origin, but not before burning through the first floor ceiling to create a hole on the second floor. A dog perished in the fire.
The Mess Canteen was at the scene and setup near Lincolnshire-Riverwoods’ new dive/rehab unit.
Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were both at the scene. Images and a video from Larry are in this post and images from Tim are forthcoming.
