Barrington Box Alarm 1-8-13

The Barrington & Countryside FPD received a call reporting a barn fire this afternoon at 544 Penny Road in Barrington Hills. The vacant barn is on the Cook County Forest Preserve property behind a vacant house which used to be occupied by a caretaker. The structure was fully involved when the first Barrington companies arrived, and the alarm was upgraded immediately to a box alarm for water tankers and additional personnel.

The structure went down quickly and no exposures were threatened. Five tankers shuttled water to the scene. Departments with tankers were Long Grove, Palatine Rural, East Dundee, Wauconda, and Bartlett. Engines came from Carpentersville, Lake Zurich, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Hoffman Estates, and Fox River Grove. Palatine responded with Quint 81 in addition to Cary Squad 255, Buffalo Grove Ambulance 26, and Arlington Heights Ambulance 1.

Tim Olk, Scott Peterson, and Larry Shapiro all went to the scene and will have images to share.

East Dundee FPD wants new station

The Daily Herald has an article about the East Dundee Fire District‘s desire for a new station:

East Dundee fire district trustees will hold a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, to discuss an ordinance that would place a referendum on the Nov. 6 ballot to sell general obligations bonds to build a new fire station.

Trustees will not only decide whether to pose the question to voters, but they will decide how much money they will need to raise through the bond sale.

If voters approve the request for funds, the fire station will be constructed along Route 25, north of Route 72 on three acres of land village trustees donated to the fire district. It will be next to the River Haven multifamily subdivision now under construction.

Trustees and the fire chief contend the new station is needed because fast access to many of their ambulance and fire calls is no longer easy.

“Our current station (on Third Street) was built in 1950, the west most part of the village. That was good for then, but we’ve expanded to the east,” the chief said. “Our district goes out to South Barrington where Goebberts (farm) is. Now, to get out of our station, if we get up (Barrington Avenue) hill, we’re good. Before we do that, we have to make turns, cross the bike path and get through the older part of the village.”

Elgin & East Dundee departments work on mutual aid agreement

The Daily Herald has an article that discusses Elgin and East Dundee Fire Departments working on a mutual aid agreement along their common border.

The agreement would allow Elgin to call on the East Dundee Fire Protection District for another fire engine when it comes to fires at the three buildings within Elgin’s jurisdiction on Route 25, just north of I-90, said Elgin Fire Chief John Fahy. Those buildings are the Days Inn, the Brandt Drive Office Park and the now-shuttered Fox River Country Day School.

Likewise, East Dundee would ask the Elgin Fire Department to help them with fires at the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, the Milk Pail banquet hall and properties across the street from it.

It came out of a desire to work with East Dundee. Elgin already has mutual aid agreements with South Elgin, Pingree Grove and with the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District. East Dundee, meanwhile, has similar agreements with West Dundee, Carpentersville, Sleepy Hollow, South Barrington and with the Rutland-Dundee Township Fire Protection District.

Barrington 2-11 5-10-11

Barrington Fire Department house fire Flynn Creek 5-10-11 2-11

Firefighters encountered heavy fire upon arrival and had to shuttle water to the scene. The fire which reportedly began in the garage spread quickly throughout the home which appeared from the front to be a ranch house when in fact there were two-stories in the rear.Larry Shapiro photo

Shortly before 1AM, Barrington received a call reporting fire in an attached garage at 27818 W. Flynn Creek Drive. This is an area without hydrants and the initial alarm included both tankers from Barrington plus mutual aid from Long Grove with Tanker 55 in addition to all Barrington companies and a Lake Zurich engine.  Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the house that sits on a hill with one-story in front and two-stories in the rear. They immediately upgraded to a Box Alarm which brought help from Carpentersville, Hoffman Estates, East Dundee, Cary, Rolling Meadows, Wauconda, Palatine, and the Palatine Rural Fire Department. Flynn Creek is a narrow, one-lane road which barely accommodated the tankers and a handful of other apparatus. As the fire progressed, a 2nd alarm was struck which brought tankers from South Elgin, Bartlett, and Nunda in addition to another truck and two more engines. Most of the 2nd alarm companies were not put to work.

The tanker shuttle brought roughly 42,000 gallons of water to the fire from 8 tankers. There were no injuries reported.

Larry Shapiro was at the fire and submitted a few quick images. The gallery can be viewed HERE, and the video is still in the works.
