A visit to Engine 87’s old house

This from Dan McInerney:

With the announcements recently of the city selling old firehouses, here is an example of the unusual – an old firehouse that became a private residence many years ago. There are but a handful of old firehouses that have been converted into residential occupancies.
This is Engine 87’s old house located on 87th street at Escanaba (SE corner). It was built in 1907 and was in service until 1980. It looks to be in pretty good shape for a 106 year old building. It still has red apparatus doors and the “Fire Department” stone inscription is still very much intact. The neighborhood has declined over the years and is not a great place to be after dark, and many of the neighboring buildings haven’t fared as well….

MABAS Division 11 fire trucks

This from Dan McInerney:

Last week MABAS Division 11 conducted a division wide Blue Card drill at the Cicero FD training tower. Departments from Division 11 performed basic fireground activities with an emphasis on radio protocol. The rain and clouds didn’t make for great pictures but I managed to grab a few.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm at 1433 S Kenneth 5-23-13 (pt 2)

This from Dan McInerney:

Some photos from this morning’s 2-11 at 1433 S. Kenneth. I got there late after the fire had been pretty much put out. Fire was in a 3sty, vacant apartment building, marked with the ominous red “X”. Fire was mostly throughout the 3rd floor. A tower ladder, 5-5-2’s Snorkel, a mulitversal and a few handlines were used. Both TL14 and E99 had mechanical issues – E117 coming in on the 2-11 was tasked with replacing E99, and TL5 was sent for TL14. Attached are a couple of scene shots and a few rig shots.
The first 3 show the Snorkel and multiversal on the north side of the fire building

Still & Box at 12300 S. Michigan Ave. 2-21-2013

This from Dennis McGuire, Jr.

This afternoon Engine Co. 62 pulled up to a 1 sty ord occupied auto repair shop with flames thru the roof. After crews gained entry the 22 Battalion requested a Still and Box alarm. A lot of overhaul and salvage after the fire was struck out.

More from Dan McInerney:

Here are some pictures from the still and box at 12300 S. Michigan Thursday afternoon.
They had a fire in a 1 story vacant autobody shop. It looks like it may have been an auto fire in the garage that ended up getting into the cockloft and going through the roof. Squad 5 was on a still in the high rise on 41st St. and the 22nd wanted an elevated stream which he didn’t have on the still, so he boxed it to get a tower ladder. E115 and E75 had a 2.5” each led out and made quick work of the fire. Neither TL34 or Squad 5 (who eventually made it there from 41st St.) worked their platforms. There was a lot of overhaul afterwards, and the 22nd Battalion asked to EFAO to notify the Building Department that this was a vacant and open building.

Chicago working fire 2-6-13

This from Dan McInerney:

Working fire on the second floor of a 2 sty vacant rowhouse at 3554 S. Prairie. Companies- E16, T15, E19, T11, Bn 2, 5-5-1, 2-7-3. RIT Bn 15 and T4. I got there late but it was too nice a day not to shoot some rigs. This area has a large concentration of row house construction extending well to the east and south of here. Some really beautiful 2 story greystones with designs and styles you don’t see elsewhere in the city. It’s a shame to see a lot of them boarded up and vacant.

E65 is seen pumping to E26. E65 is shown connected to the hydrant using the lightweight suction hose. There are two types of lightweight suction hose – the first is hose that is to be used for suction only (negative pressure) and not to be connected to a pressurized hydrant (positive pressure). The type of lightweight suction hose the CFD now issues to rigs is reinforced internally to be able to withstand positive pressure. Dan McInerney photo

CTA Emergency Response Unit

CTA emergency unit 202. This unit respond citywide for any emergency involing the EL tracks or CTA property. In this case they responded to the scene due to the fire’s proximity to the Pink Line, which was shut down early on in the fire. Dan McInerney photo

People's Gas Company crew working at fire scene

Peoples Gas was requested to shut down the gas to the building. To do so, they had to dig a hole in the street, which is visible here underneath the sheets of plywood and cones. It was later requested they use their front end loader to clear the street of bricks from the collapse so TL54 could be moved west down 21st St. to better wash down the ruins. Dan McInerney photo

Chicago Fire Department engine working at fire scene

E23 (still engine) took a postion underneath the railroad viaduct directly to the west of the fire building. This spot left the rest of 21st St. open for responding truck companies, and also provided them some protection from falling debris should the building collapse. The viadust later flooded due to the fire streams being used on the building. At it’s height there were at least 11 master streams being employed. At a slightly conservative 500gpm each, a minimum of around 6000gpm for 2 plus hours will flood any viaduct, and they usually do flood. Dan McInerney photo

This from Dan McInerney:

Happened across a drill with members of the 13th Battalion on the 4000 blk of West End, just west of 95’s house. Present were E95 and 113, T26 and 14 drilling under the supervision of the 13th on roof operations. T26 had its main raised and T14 deployed a 40 ladder on the west side of the house. In the background are members of T26 on the roof.

This from Martin Nowak:

Today was the day Roberts Park drove Santa around Justice. I managed to get two videos and two pictures before going to work. The videos will be uploaded tonight or tomorrow, but here is a picture. Don’t forget, tomorrow is the day for Hickory Hills. This tradition was started by the Justice Fire Department.
