Chicago had a working still at 2833 N. Spaulding. We were on our way home from Skokie and took it in. Engine 106 had heavy smoke O/A. Fire was reported to be on the 1st floor. Truck 13 made the roof and did a lot of work up there. Engine 106 had two lines lead out. Here are my pictures along with the new Explorer for Paramedic Field Chief 4-5-2.

Chicago firefighters responded to a reported fire in a large warehouse complex last night at 4834 S. Halsted. First arriving units found a 200×500, 5-story, fire-resistive structure with heavy smoke pushing out of the first floor. After a brief interior attack, companies were pulled out to initiate defensive operations. The alarm was upgraded to a 2-11 and a special call was made for Engine 81 with Hose Wagon 6-1-1.

The Chicago Tribune reported:

One firefighter was injured at an extra-alarm blaze in an abandoned factory in the Back of the Yards neighborhood that was being brought under control this evening.

The fire started in the abandoned L-shaped building west of 48th Street and Halsted Avenue about 5:45 p.m. The firefighter was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment, where he was alert and comfortable this evening, according to the Fire Department.

The factory building is of concrete construction, so was not as difficult to contain the fire as the recent extra-alarm fire in Bridgeport.

About a dozen fire department vehicles were stationed around the vacant warehouse Monday evening as others blocked off Halsted between 47th and 49th streets.

Firefighters called to the scene were confronted with volumes of “thick black smoke” streaming out of the warehouse’s windows, said deputy fire comissioner John McNicholas.

Tower Ladders and the Snorkel were positioned to be put to work, but the fire was determined to be involving contents and not the building itself. Another special request was made for Engine 106 with 9-2-3, the Mobile Ventilation Unit.

Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro went to the scene, but there was not much to see.

CFD apparatus history – Ward LaFrance (1970)

Bill Friedrich has initiated the first in a series of posts chronicling different types of apparatus that saw service in Chicago. The first post covers the Ward LaFrance engines from 1970.

There were a total of (7) P80’s delivered in 1970, one for each district. Companies that received these were Engine 126 (D-372), Engine 73 (D-373), Engine 8 (D-374), Engine 106 (D-375), Engine 22 (D-376), Engine 113 (D-377) and Engine 49 (D-378). These units had 2,000-GPM pumps.

This unit originally assigned to Engine 22 later went to Engine 99 and then to Engine 46 after a complete refurb. The CFD scramble on the door and the red unit number on the front were not part of the original graphics. This unit, damaged by a wall collapse, was rebuilt. Shown here after the rebuild, the cab is lacking the continuous hand rail at the canopy that extended up the sides and across the top. In 1990 (6) of the original 1970 P80’s were rebuilt by Able Fire Equipment Co. at their Frankfort, IL facility. The rebuild included a Ranger 4-door cab, a new aluminum Emergency One body, a 140-gallon foam tank, and other components of the original apparatus. The following companies received these vehicles; Engine 122 (x-Engine 126), Engine 69 (x-Engine 8), Engine 113 (x-Engine 106), Engine 46 (x-Engine 22), Engine 14 (x-Engine 113) and Engine 34 (x-Engine 49) All these vehicles were equipped with 5″ hose. One was assigned in each district of the city. Two of these, D-374 and D-375, were used in the movie Backdraft.
