Algonquin Box Alarm 9-29-12

From the Northwest Herald.

Cole Ryals was working at Algonquin Sub Shop when a frantic man ran into the store Saturday and asked him to call 911.

The home at 5 Filip St. was engulfed in flames that produced heavy smoke.

“It’s the first time I ever had to call the police; I didn’t know what was happening,” Ryals, 18, said.

The two-story house was fully engulfed when firefighters from the Algonquin Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District arrived at 6:36 p.m. Flames were shooting through the roof, neighbors said.

Firefighters first went inside but were pulled out when crews feared the roof would collapse. They extinguished the blaze from the outside and were on the scene until about 9:30 p.m.

No one was home when the fire broke out. Two cats were found to be safe and were turned over to the residents when they arrived home.

There were no injuries.

Emergency crews from Crystal Lake, Cary, Huntley, Carpentersville, Huntley and McHenry County Animal Control assisted with the incident.

9/11 Memorial in Algonquin Features Trade Center Steel

The Daily Herald has an article describing a firefighter memorial being built by the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Firefighters Association:

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Firefighters Association is building the memorial on the north end of Riverfront Park. The location is particularly significant because the old firehouse used to be across the street until about eight years ago, firefighter/paramedic Dan Teson said.

Construction started last week, right after agreements were approved by the village of Algonquin and the fire protection district, and is on track to be finished in time for a Sept. 11 dedication, Teson said.

The memorial will consist of a brick paver circle 40 feet in diameter with the World Trade Center steel beam in the middle, and landscaping all around it, Teson said.

The firefighters association got the beam, which weighs more than 5,000 pounds, as a donation from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Teson said. He and two other firefighters flew to New York City in November to accept the donation, and were met there by one of the firefighters’ father, who drove his truck, Teson said. The foursome picked up the beam at a hangar outside LaGuardia Airport, and father and son drove it back to Illinois.

“It absolutely does have an effect on you, when you sit there and physically touch a piece of something that was a major part of our history, probably one of the worst days that we’ve ever had in the U.S. To be able to be part of something like that in a positive manner, and pay tribute to all the people who died that day, it’s very meaningful,” he said.

The color of fire trucks (part 7)

MABAS Division 5 encompasses McHenry County. There are 18 departments in the division and several had non-red apparatus over the years. Only three departments had fleets that were lime green and white or yellow; the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District, the Lake in the Hills station of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District, and the Woodstock Rural Fire Protection District (now part of the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District). According to the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District website, in October of 1993, the Woodstock Rural Fire Protection District, Woodstock City Fire Department, and Woodstock Rescue Squad merged together to form the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.

Eight other departments had red fleets, but at one time each had a unit that was painted differently. (Crystal Lake, Hebron, Harvard, the Marengo Rescue Squad, Richmond, Spring Grove, Union, and Woodstock City)

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department  purchased a small rescue squad in 1982 that conformed to the Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications, one of which required that it be delivered painted lime green.

The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District had a brush truck which was blue in contrast to the rest of the fleet that was painted red.

The Harvard Fire Protection District and the Harvard Rescue Squad ran out of the same station. The Rescue Squad had an orange and white squad which was the only piece with this paint scheme.

The Richmond Fire Protection District had a rescue squad that was painted white.

The Woodstock City Fire Department purchased a Seagrave quad in 1967 that was painted white, and  they also had a white brush truck, a 1969 Dodge W300/Welch 250/200.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire District had two stations in years past. The apparatus at the Lake in the Hills station was painted yellow. They had a 1968 IHC/Welch squad and there were two additional pumpers at the Lake In the Hills station that were painted chrome yellow;  a 1972, IHC Cargostar-Alexis  750/750, and a 1975, IHC Cargostar-Bean  750/1000.

Algonquin to build firefighter memorial

The Daily Herald has an article about the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Firefighters Association preparing to create a firefighter’s memorial

The memorial would be in honor of fallen firefighters within the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Lt. Matt Berg said during a committee of the whole meeting Tuesday night. The memorial would be built on a 60 foot by 60 foot area on the north end of Riverfront Park, east of Harrison Street where it meets Edward Street, and across from where the old firehouse — now demolished — was located until about eight years ago.

Two Algonquin-Lake in the Hills firefighters have died in the line of duty since the department was first formed in 1895: Edwin Benson, who died in 1967, and G.D. “Mac” McIntyre, who died in 1976, firefighter/paramedic Dan Teson said.

The association began working on the plan about four years ago, when the original idea was to build a 9-foot bronze statue that would have cost $50,000. “That was our initial plan, but that changed with the economic climate,” Teson said.
