Buffalo Grove Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

The Buffalo Grove village board approved a new three-year deal with its firefighters Monday that will give the union members a 2 percent raise next year retroactive to May 1. Salary hikes in the last two years of the deal will be negotiated separately.

Fire Chief Mike Baker called the deal a status quo renewal of the village’s contract with International Association of Firefighters, Local 3177 that expired at the end of April. The number of available health plans dropped from three to two, one an HMO and another a PPO.

The minimum and starting annual salary is $61,674. After seven years of employment, firefighters can earn more than $100,500.

Lisle-Woodridge FPD news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Investigators from the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District are probing the cause of a Saturday blaze that sent one firefighter to the hospital and left a house uninhabitable on the 2000 block of Pebble Creek Drive in Lisle.

Authorities said a passer-by reported the fire at 1:37 p.m. Saturday and the first firefighters arrived about four minutes later to find heavy fire in the roof and attic area. No family members were home at the time.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 35 minutes, but crews remained on the scene for several hours to perform salvage and overhaul of the burned areas in the structure.

One firefighter was treated and released from a hospital for unspecified injuries.

Lisle-Woodridge units were assisted on the scene by firefighters from Downers Grove, Darien-Woodridge, Lombard, Naperville, Warrenville and Wheaton.

Crash with extrication in North Aurora, 10-16-17

This from Dave Weaver:

10/16/17 NORTH AURORA, IL – North Aurora FD Box Alarm heavy extrication crash, two vehicles under a semi trailer w/ entrapment and double medevac Orchard Rd. and I-88 – Video by Dave Weaver

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Two men died and three others were taken to hospitals after two cars collided with a semitractor trailer Monday at the Orchard Road Interstate 88 overpass in Kane County.

Investigators are looking into whether the collisions are related to two Aurora shootings reported between 11 a.m. and the time of the crash

Working together, detectives from the county sheriff’s department and Aurora Police Department haven’t ruled out that the shootings and crash are the result of gang violence. The colors of the cars that crashed matched the colors of the cars involved in the Aurora shooting

A Jaguar and a GMC Envoy were northbound on Orchard Road, apparently traveling at high speeds, when both cars struck the semi-trailer that was turning south onto Orchard Road after getting off eastbound I-88.

The GMC driver, identified as Christopher Shaw, 23, of North Aurora, was pronounced dead at the scene. The GMC’s two passengers, one who had been in the front and the other in the back seat, were flown to a hospital. The front seat passenger, Devonte Bouchee, 24, of Aurora, died later in the afternoon, and the back seat passenger, a 23-year-old Aurora man, had injuries that were potentially life-threatening.

The Jaguar driver, a 38-year-old Aurora man; and the truck driver, a 27-year-old from Burbank, were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office and Aurora police are investigating two separate reports involving vehicles chasing each other and exchanging shots in the Aurora area before the crash Monday.

Nothing was apparently hit in the first shooting, which was reported at 11:04 a.m., and the second shooting, at 11:45 a.m. along Nantucket Road and Durham Drive near West Indian Trail Road in Aurora, resulted in gunfire damage to two homes.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on the shootings to call Kane County investigators at 630-444-1103 or Aurora’s at 630-256-5500, or Aurora area crime stoppers at 630-892-1000.

Chicago Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

22 Chicago firefighters have returned from nine days of emergency duty in hurricane-stricken Puerto Rico.

Their work day began before dawn and sometimes lasted into the night, and their job was to get supplies and perform well-being checks in places no one else could reach.

Incident Commander Juan Hernandez says the devastation is several times worse than what youā€™re seeing on TV and the internet.

ā€œBroken bridges, roads disconnected, thereā€™s an area where thereā€™s about 200 individuals that are totally disconnected from civilization.ā€ Hernandez said the other way to get food and medical supplies to them was to use a zip line.

Santiago said 20 of the 22 firefighters are bilingual. The commissioner said another 400 members of the department also volunteered to go, even offering to pay their own way.

The men and women making the trip had to use their vacation time to go to Puerto Rico.

To donate, a list of organizations and charities can be found on the cityā€™s website.
