Josh Boyajian spotted this photo on the Pierce Flickr site of the new engine for Bristol-Kendall. Bill Freidrich mentioned this unit to us last week when it was posted HERE. It is a Custom Contender CAFS unit that was originally built as a stock piece.

New engine for Huntley
Mar 25
Martin Nowak spotted a new engine in production on the Ferrara website for the Huntley Fire Protection District. The site only lists an Ember chassis and no other specifications. The black over red cab is painted and the body is mounted, but not painted.
Palatine dive rescue 3-24-11
Mar 24
The Palatine Fire Department was called shortly after noon this afternoon for a reported car in a pond on the Harper College campus. Companies arrived to find only the roof visible of a submerged car with the passenger door open. Divers entered the water and found a woman in the car. She was removed and transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where she was later pronounced dead. The Chicago Tribune has an article HERE and the Daily Herald has one HERE.
Fire department divers from Palatine, Hoffman Estates, and Schaumburg searched the area for over an hour in the event that there were additional occupants in the car when it entered the water. Elk Grove, Arlington Heights, and Mt. Prospect divers were also on-scene in the event that more personnel were needed. After assisting the police with measurements for their investigation, divers hooked the car so that it could be winched from the water.
This is from the Harper College website:
News Alert: Shortly before noon on Thursday, March 24, 2011 a car was discovered submerged in a pond next to Parking Lot 12 on the Harper College campus in Palatine, IL. Divers recovered one female occupant of the car who was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights and pronounced dead.
The victim has not been identified. The investigation is being handled jointly by the Harper College Police Department, the Palatine Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Officer.
Larry Shapiro was at the scene and submitted several images plus a video of the winch out. A large gallery of images from the scene can be found HERE.
CFD fire boat construction
Mar 24
There is a very interesting site HERE with a year’s worth of photos documenting the construction of the new fire boat for Chicago. The drawing below illustrates the design. Previous posts about the boat can be found HERE and HERE.
There’s also an article HERE with more photos from the Chatham Daily News, a local paper where the boat is being constructed in Ontario, Canada.
The Winnetka Fire Department in MABAS Division 3 has placed their new quint into service which ushers in a new look for the department. The 2010 Smeal was delivered with a black roof and the department designed a new door seal. The design is a maltese cross in gold and black which incorporates both the Winnetka and Kenilworth names. Engine 28, the 2000 Pierce Saber received a black top, the new decal, and new striping. Ambulance 28 also has the new decal and striping. As of now, Engine 28R and Ambulance 28R both have the original look and the previous door decal.
This is how Truck 28 looked when it was retired. It had their most recent door seal and two-tone striping.
When Winnetka received Truck 28 in 1990, the original graphics were much simpler and the door seal featured the sun rising on at the lake.
Before Winnetka changed their numbering to Station 28 as part of MABAS Division 3, their rigs carried unit numbers in the ’70s’. Truck 70, shown here, preceded Truck 28 as one of Winnetka’s two aerial devices. They also had a 55-foot Snorkel in the house.
Winnetka Engine 28 now sports a black roof plus a triple stripe with the new door seal.
The previous design for Engine 28 had lettering on the rear door listing both Winnetka and Kenilworth. These names were included in the new door seal leaving more room for a nice graphic showing the unit number.
When Engine 28 was purchased, it had the rising sun door decal matching the truck shown above.
Huntley Fire Station 4
Mar 22
Scott Peterson submitted photos of Huntley’s new fire station #4 which is under construction one block west of Square Barn Road and 1/2 block south of Algonquin Road. It is slated to open in the spring. Scott tells us that the station resides in the Village of Algonquin.
The Summit Fire Department responded to a fire at 6135 S. Archer Ave. early yesterday morning and encountered fire through the roof of a commercial occupancy. Hank Sajovic took in the fire and submitted several images. The Sun-Times has a brief article HERE and CBS Chicago has an article HERE and the Tribune has a more extensive article HERE.
The Norwood Park Fire Department in MABAS Division 20 recently received a new 2011 Type III ambulance from Medtec on a Ford E450 chassis.
Thanks to Martin Nowak for spotting this on the Foster Coach website.
The new Pierce tower ladder for Tower 15 in Lincolnwood is being outfitted to go into service with a target date of April 1. As mentioned in several previous comments, the Lincolnwood house is currently overflowing with apparatus. One of the three ambulances has been relegated to sit outside and Engine 15R is being stored at the public works facility while the new Tower 15 and the current Truck 15 consume space in the apparatus bays. The disposition of the 1989 Pierce Arrow 105′ rear mount is unclear.
Larry Shapiro stopped by Lincolnwood on Saturday and took photos of the new tower ladder.
Truck 15 presumably worked its last fire on the 14th of February at a 2-11 in Lincolnwood.
New CFD units in service

Gordon J. Nord, Jr. took advantage of Saturday’s nice weather to get photos of the new Crimson aerial for Truck 31 (shop #E338) and the new Oshkosh Striker for 6-5-1 at Midway Airport.
The new Striker 3000 is replacing this 2000 TI-3000 unit that was also equipped with a Snozzle.
