4-Alarm fire with 2 specials in Northlake, 2-15-14 (part 1)

This is the first in what will be a multi-part posting about Saturday night’s 4-Alarm fire with 2 specials in Northlake. Multiple contributors were at the scene.

Prior to receiving multiple cellphone calls, someone knocked on the door of the Leyden Township FPD station at the corner of Mannheim and Grand just before 6PM to report a fire four blocks down the road. Units found heavy smoke pushing from a one-story, commercial structure with a bow-string truss roof. The building was occupied by a tire business and was currently full of tires.

The fire, at 2200 N. Mannheim Road was in the Northlake Fire Protection District. (opposite sides of the intersection belong to either the Leyden Township FPD or the Northlake FPD). The Still Alarm was filled out and a Box Alarm, then a 2nd Alarm were requested within minutes, followed very shortly be the 3rd and 4th Alarms.

The roof collapsed early and sent flames several hundred feet into the air as companies setup elevated master streams from the Leyden quint, trucks from Northlake and Franklin Park, and then the Schiller Park tower ladder.

Here’s the rundown of companies and alarms:

  • Still Alarm: Northlake Engine & truck; Leyden quint; Melrose Park engine
  • Full Still: Bensenville engine; Leyden ambulance; Elmhurst truck
  • Box Alarm: engines from Hillside & Stone Park; Franklin Park truck; Schiller Park tower ladder; ambulances from Bensdenville & Melrose Park
  • 2nd Alarm: engines from Berkely & Elmwood Park; Rosemont tower ladder; Broadview squad
  • 3rd Alarm: engines from Norwood Park & River Grove; Addison tower ladder
  • 4th Alarm: engine from Park Ridge and Villa Park
  • 1st Special Alarm: Interdivisional request for an engine Task Force from Division 3; North Maine, Niles, Morton Grove, Glenview, & Prospect Heights
  • 2nd Special Alarm: Foam Task Force from Chicago Division 9; Battalion 8, Engine 10, Squad 7, Squad 7A, ARFF 6-5-3
  • Also at the scene were: Bellwood bus, Bellwood command post, Bellwood tower ladder, River Grove ambulance, Schiller Park ambulance, MESS Canteen, Salvation Army Canteen, O’Hare Towing,  numerous ESDA units, multiple chief officers

Still alarm fire in Schiller Park 7-18-19

This from Mike Lopina:

Schiller Park FD - 10511 W United Parkway
Driving north on I-294 and saw a header & heard traffic on fireground that indicated a fire in/on the roof. Bldg at 10511W United Pkwy is a 1sty non combustible 350x150. Looked like it was going to become an extra alarm fire from the tollway, but by the time I made my way there (10 minutes), it was out, companies had made a great knock and contained the fire to a rooftop HVAC unit with some extension to the roof deck. In addition to Schiller Park Eng 5, TL 5, Amb 5 & BN 5; Franklin Park Trk 2, Leyden Qnt 133, Norwood Park Eng 101 & Franklin Park BN 490. Awesome job by the crews working; especially considering the heat.

Schiller Park has been added to the site

Schiller Park Fire Department patchThe Schiller Park Fire Department in MABAS Division 20 has been added to the site. Schiller Park has two stations, though only the headquarters station is staffed. The second station currently houses a reserve engine and ambulance. The suppression fleet consists of Pierce apparatus with a broad range of chassis: Saber, Enforcer, Dash, & Impel. Ambulances are from Wheeled Coach, Road Rescue, and very soon from Medtec as well.

Daily staffing includes an engine, an ambulance, a shift commander, and a jump company for the tower ladder or a second ambulance. Although apparatus is currently black over red, Schiller Park was at one time lime green and also had separate fire and EMS divisions.

Franklin Park 3-11 alarm fire and EMS Box Alarm 8-11-11

Shortly before 2AM on Thursday a motorist made a cellular 9-1-1 call and reported a fire at 3010 Mannheim Road in Franklin Park. First arriving units were met by heavy fire in the front lobby and on the third floor of a large, three-story, vacant motel property that is setup in the shape of an ‘H’ with a banquet hall in the rear. The building has been vacant for several years, and Franklin Park firefighters knew that the structural integrity of the building was suspect and they preplanned to take a defensive stance upon arrival if the building caught fire.

When the first companies found heavy fire, they immediately requested a MABAS Box Alarm from MABAS Division 20. A 2nd alarm was requested roughly 20 minutes later. Six elevated master streams were eventually put to work around the building with the Melrose Park Bronto (working it’s second 3-11 alarm fire in a 12 hour span) setup on the south (‘B’), Leyden Township to the west (‘C’) with an E-ONE HP75, Rosemont to the north (‘D’) with their Pierce tower ladder, and the other three were working on Mannheim Road in front of the building (‘A’). This included another Bronto from Elmwood Park, a Seagrave rear mount from Franklin Park, and another Pierce tower from Schiller Park.

Engines that were due up to the 2nd alarm were two from Franklin Park, and one each from Stone Park, Elmhurst, River Grove, Norwood Park, Northlake, and Bensenville. Chicago Squad 7 from O’Hare was also due on the 2nd alarm.

An EMS Box Alarm was also struck which brought ambulances from Schiller Park, Leyden Township, River Grove, and Bensenville in addition to an ambulance from Northlake. This allowed for multiple ambulances to be on standby for the multiple Rapid Intervention Teams that were part of the preplanning to accommodate the size of the property and the potential for unsafe conditions.

A 3rd alarm fire box was initiated roughly an hour into the fire to provide relief companies for the crews that were working. This brought Maywood Truck 502 along with engines from River Forest, Berkely, and Hillside.

The fire proved to have a hold throughout the main building and required several instances where all lines were shut down to allow the fire to burn through the roof so that firefighters could have access to extinguish the flames. Several hand lines and multi-versals were put to use supplementing the elevated master streams.

Several hours into the fire all of the lines were shut down so the fire could burn freely to allow firefighters better access to it. Larry Shapiro photo

The fire grows in intensity without water being applied. This in turn gave firefighters more access to fight the fire that was burning beneath the intact roof. Larry Shapiro photo

The alarms were finally struck out near 8AM as it appeared that companies finally had gotten the upper hand and were able to reach all of the deep seated fire which proved to be quite stubborn.

Several area photographers, Steve Redick, Tim Olk, Larry Shapiro, and Gordon J. Nord Jr., were at the scene overnight and will have images to post at different times during the day. As the images become available, the posting will be updated. Larry has a gallery HERE, and Steve has a gallery HERE.

3-11 in Schiller Park 1-27-11 update

The Chicago Tribune reports that a second victim has been recovered in the debris of last week’s fatal fire in Schiller Park at the Horse Shoe Inn.

Four days after the owner of a Schiller Park tavern was found beaten to death inside his burned-out business, authorities Monday found the body of a woman there, officials said.

Schiller Park police identified the woman as Wendy Bonder, 61, of Schiller Park. According to Mike Marrazzo of the Schiller Park Police Department, Bonder was a regular patron of the Horseshoe Inn, 9639 Irving Park Road, and may have been a part-time bartender.

Investigators discovered Bonder’s body Monday inside the charred shell of the tavern “after meticulously removing ceiling debris measuring three feet in thickness that fell during the extinguishing of the fire,” according to a news release.

Police believe Bonder died of blunt force trauma.

Bonder was found inside the charred shell of the tavern. She was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
