This is the first of what will be several posts covering the massive fire in Cicero Tuesday night.
Here’s a quick synopsis: The fire originated at 1829 54th Avenue and communicated to 1843 54th Avenue. Over the period of less than an hour, it was upgraded to 4 alarms and then there was a special call for assistance from Chicago and a Task Force from MABAS Division 20.
Here are a few images from Eric Haak … more to follow from Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro … be patient.
This from Eric:
Just for reference, the first photo is the first one I took. Shots 4 and 5 are the heavy fire conditions blowing out the sector 4 side of the building about 10 minutes after that first picture was taken. Pictures 6, 7 and 8 are all Oak Park’s tower working the sector 2/3 corner. Picture 3 shows Cicero engine 1 working it’s deck gun which they only did for a few minutes.
Cicero working fire, 1-17-14

This from Josh Boyajian:
Cicero Companies were dispatched to a reported structure fire @ 5742 w. 24th Street this afternoon. While En-route the chief confirmed he had a fire. First in companies reported fire blowing out of the 2nd floor on arrival. Engine 2 dropped a 2-1/2 to the rear while Truck 2 laddered the front of the building. Here are some of my pictures.
One parting post on last weeks commercial fire in Evanston, some interesting apparatus shots from Steve Redick.
- Perhaps someone can comment on this, but the webmaster can’t remember another time (certainly in recent years) that all five Evanston engines were pumping at the same fire
- Steve has the first shot we’ve seen of the Glenview/Northfield Truck 14/29 in service and labeled as Truck 29
- Wilmette and Winnetka engines were also pumping at the scene, though Steve tells us that they were each substituted for Evanston engines that required fuel
- an interesting note, with the inclusion of the Wilmette and Winnetka engines, this fire utilized Engines 21, 22, 23, 24 25, 26, & 28 … almost a complete sequence of numerical units …
Riverside Box Alarm 6-20-13
Jun 21
This from Drew Gresik:
Here are a couple of photos from Riverside’s Box Alarm at 73 Northgate Road. Fire was in the basement upon arrival, with heavy smoke pushing from the chimney. Command had Engine 1621 lead a line into the home to knock the fire while Truck 1629 had the roof for ventilation. Fire was knocked in about 20 minutes. No shots of flames at this fire, but some cool shots of the smoke patterns before crews made entry. Attached are photos of several rigs and the structure. Forest View is currently using the Darien-Woodridge reserve engine that says “Southwest United Fire Districts” since both of their rigs are out of service with water damage to the electrical systems after that record flood a month or so ago. LaGrange has re-numbered their old Pierce and still runs it on M/A calls.
