Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
20-year-old Ruben A.O. Cruz has pleaded not guilty to setting a fire last spring that did $70 million worth of damage to a Woodridge warehouse filled with furniture. He entered the plea last Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Chicago, where he is charged with a felony count of intentionally damaging property by fire. U.S. Magistrate Judge Manish S. Shah accepted Cruz’s plea and continued the matter.
Cruz, a forklift operator, is accused of using a disposable lighter on April 21 to set fire to a packing slip. That, in turn, sparked the blaze that destroyed the 325,000-square-foot RoomPlace warehouse on Internationale Parkway in Woodridge.
Sixty-five employees escaped from the fire, which raged for about seven hours and was battled by more than 100 firefighters from Woodridge and 34 other fire agencies.
Investigators have said Cruz set the fire following a work-related argument with his supervisor.
The supervisor told Cruz he would be losing some of his vacation time because he had missed two days of work earlier in the month. Cruz, who had worked for the RoomPlace for about seven months, insisted he had been at work on those days and allegedly became upset during the meeting, with his supervisor telling him he had enough information to fire him, authorities said. The supervisor called another manager into the office because he said he was afraid Cruz would become violent.
Cruz left the meeting to return to work on the warehouse floor. The building’s fire alarms sounded about 15 minutes later. One employee claimed to have seen Cruz running toward him and dropping a lighter as he went. Cruz turned around and picked up the lighter before continuing to the emergency exit, the worker told authorities.
Cruz was reportedly seen playing cards outside the building as the fire burned.

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:
A disgruntled employee intentionally set a massive fire that destroyed a RoomPlace distribution center in southwest suburban Woodridge, federal investigators said Friday.
Ruben Ochoa Cruz, 20, of Joliet, is facing federal arson charges in connection with the blaze that caused around $70 million in damages last week. He had worked at the warehouse as a forklift operator for seven months.
The blaze broke out on April 21 at the RoomPlace’s main distribution center in the 2500-block of Internationale Parkway around 5 p.m. Firefighters said more than 700,000 square feet went up in flames, and more than 100 firefighters from 30 departments were called in to help. About 65 employees who were working at the time were able to escape unharmed, but the building was reduced to ash.
Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said that Cruz had an argument with management over his attendance the day the fire broke out. After returning to his duties, Cruz then allegedly lit a piece of packing slip on fire and dropped it from a forklift that had been raised high above the ground. Investigators said that Cruz has admitted to the crime.
“He was upset with management, with his supervisors, because he had just had a heated argument with them over vacation time. They were going to cut his vacation time because of days missed at work, and he was upset about that. And so he left that meeting and angrily went back to his station where he was working within the warehouse,” ATF spokesperson Tom Ahern said.
ATF investigators said they were able to identify Cruz because of a security card screener that put him in the area of the warehouse where the fire began.
Officials for The RoomPlace responded to the charges in a written statement: “We are deeply disturbed at the news one of our employees has been charged in connection with the fire that destroyed our main distribution center April 21st. We continue to cooperate with federal authorities as they search for more details around a cause and potential motive. In the meantime, we remain focused on rebuilding our warehouse and delivery infrastructure and supporting those employees displaced by the fire.”
Cruz is in the custody of U.S. Marshals and is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. If convicted on federal arson charges, he faces up to 20 years in prison. He could also face state charges.
Cruz is due in federal court on May 4.
thanks Dan

Excerpts from NBCChicago.com:
A four-alarm fire broke out around 5 p.m. Thursday at The RoomPlace furniture warehouse, a 700,000-square-foot building in suburban Woodridge, according to the Lemont Fire Department … causing as much as $60 million in damages and the Illinois State Fire Marshall has been called to the scene and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is investigating the blaze.
The flames created a scene so hot investigators couldn’t go near the building Friday. Nearly 20 hours after the blaze, flames remained persistent in parts of the building.
“Fire fighters from about 35 departments from the surrounding areas responded to help contain the fire,” Fire Chief George Rimbo said. “At one point, we had five aerial streams going to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings.”
The Illinois American Water Company issued a boil order for Woodridge residents who live south of I-55, according to the Village of Woodridge.
