Chicago FD Still Alarm 3-23-13

This from Steve Redick:

4046 Van Buren – Saturday..I took this one in because it was advertised as a fire in a building with a red ‘X’ … this was the first example I was able to see with the new safety marking system. It’s either a red square, a square with 1 slash, or a square with an X like this one, in the order of potential danger. Interior ops have to be assesed and approved before anyone can work inside. I believe this will be a very common site on the fireground. Also got a fair shot of one of the new buggies.

Chicago Fire Department History

This is the first of what we hope are several posts from Andrew McCullough:

These were taken by my father John McCullough in the 60s.  He was a Chicago fireman for many years. He passed away a few years ago, and I’ve started scanning some of his old slides.  All of these were taken by John McCullough or someone else in the house that he handed the camera to.  This group is from 1969 and early 70s.

Best,
Andrew

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 12-14-11

The Chicago Tribune reported the following about a 2-11 Alarm fire this morning:

Nearly 100 Chicago firefighters this morning battled an extra-alarm blaze on the city’s West Side that jumped from a Chinese restaurant to two storefronts with second-floor apartments, officials said.

No injuries were reported in the 2-11 alarm fire that appeared to have started in the one-story restaurant  near the intersection of Cicero Avenue and Harrison Street in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The blaze, fueled by tar on the roof of the restaurant, then traveled to two buildings on either side, said Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado.

The fire broke out about 3 a.m. and spread quickly despite a steady rainfall. It was finally brought under control about 5:45 a.m. Fire officials said the fire was fueled by tar on the roof of the restaurant. As many as 99 firefighters were on the scene.

The complete article can be found HERE.

Gordon J.Nord, Jr. was on the scene and submitted several images from the fire.

Chicago Still & Box 2-19-11

The Chicago Fire Department was called for a fire Saturday in an industrial building at 2823 W. Fulton Street. A power surge was possibly responsible for a the building filling with smoke. Companies were prevented from entering the area of concern until ComEd crews could cut power to the building.

The Chicago Tribune has a brief article HERE. Tim Olk submitted a few images from the scene.

Lincolnwood 2-11 Alarm house fire 2-14-11

Lincolnwood Fire Department house fire St Louis 2-14-11

A basement fire at 6531 St. Louis in Lincolnwood burned for several hours on Monday causing major damage to this modern home. Larry Shapiro photo

The Lincolnwood Fire Department responded to smoke in the basement at 6531 St. Louis this afternoon and discovered a basement fire in a large two-story brick home. They were unable to extinguish the fire and upgraded the incident to a MABAS Box Alarm and then again to a 2nd Alarm bringing companies from Skokie, Evanston, Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, Wilmette, Glenview, Northbrook, Highwood, DesPlaines, plus Chicago Squad 2 and Chicago Engine 79.

Lincolnwood Fire Department house fire St Louis 2-14-11

Firefighters used the window wells and then breached the brick walls for access to the basement so they could direct water onto the fire. Larry Shapiro photo

The basement reportedly had a 9-foot ceiling and proved difficult to access. After companies went defensive, they initially accessed the basement with hand lines through the window wells. Later they breached the brick exterior in several places for better access to the basement with the ability to direct the lines with accuracy although the number of partitioned spaces made access that much more difficult. As the first floor gave way in several locations, this allowed additional access to the basement. As the basement filled with water, the fire continued to burn among the floor joists. This made hitting the varioius fires extremely difficult.

Glenview Engine 6 dropped over 600' of 5-inch hose and tagged a hydrant at the south end of the block. Larry Shapiro photo

Thick smoke permeated through the entire house and an elevated master stream from Skokie Truck 16 was deployed for a short time into the second floor. Lincolnwood’s soon to be replaced Pierce aerial was also deployed at this fire which may prove to be its’ last.

Chicago Squad 2 and the 10th Battalion were due on the box and Engine 79 came in on the 2nd alarm. Although command began releasing companies around 7PM, several mutual aid companies remained working at the scene until after 10PM.

One firefighter was injured at the scene and transported to the hospital, his condition was unknown when this post was written.

Chicago 2-11 on Milwaukee Ave 2-9-11

Chicago firefighters responded to a fire at Andy’s Deli at 5442 N. Milwaukee Avenue Wednesday evening. First arriving companies found fire in the commercial occupancy and initially had trouble securing a water supply due to several frozen hydrants in the area. The fire attack went defensive partially due to concerns about the integrity of the roof and a 2-11 Alarm was requested. Two tower ladders and Squad 2’s Snorkel applied water from their buckets and Truck 55 had their main in the air with a master stream in place. A special call was made for the Mobile Ventilation Unit (9-2-3) from Engine 106’s quarters and it was put to work in Sector 1 to push the fire to the rear and through the roof to allow companies to get at it since much of the roof had remained intact.

Steve Redick took in the fire as did Larry Shapiro. A gallery of images by Larry Shapiro can be seen HERE.

A gallery link to images by Steve Redick is HERE.

Here are a few images from the scene.

The Chicago Tribune has a brief article HERE.

Since the fire was in the center of the building and the roof was largely intact, the MVU 9-2-3 was setup in front of the building to fan the fire so that firefighters could attack it without entering the premises. Larry Shapiro photo

Engine 83 brought Light Wagon 9-1-3 to the scene, as one is due at each 2-11 alarm fire in the city. Towards the end of the event, it was brought to Sector 1 and put to work offering firefighters greater visibility to direct handlines deep into the building from the sidewalk. Larry Shapiro photo

Chicago Fire Department 2-11 Andy's Deli 2-9-11

As companies began to break down their lines, most encountered hose with water that had frozen. They had to wrestle with the rigid hose to get it onto the engines and in some cases along the aerial bed of ladders for the trip back to quarters. There, companies repacked with new hose and dealt with the frozen hose in whatever manner they could. Larry Shapiro photo
