Downers Grove firefighters receive surprise

https://amp.twimg.com/v/e4402370-bea1-4b6c-8ea2-9d18a806bf7f

Excerpts from NBCChicago.com:

What would you do if your favorite Chicago Blackhawks player showed up at your doorstep with dinner?

For the guys at the Downers Grove firehouse, they did what they do best and kept their cool despite being massive Blackhawks fans.

The team has made it a trend to surprise their biggest fans in unexpected ways, and in their latest video from the “What’s Your Goal” series they answer the call of Courtney O’Leary – whose goal was to have a Blackhawks player deliver dinner to her husband and his fellow firefighters.

“He is a wonderful husband and an amazing dad and he loves his job as a firefighter/paramedic and he absolutely loves the Blackhawks,” Courtney said of her husband Patrick O’Leary. “It’s my hope that he can be surprised in a really awesome way because no one on this planet deserves it more than he does.”

New contract for Downers Grove

The Chicago Tribune has an article about a new contract for firefighters in Downers Grove:

Downers Grove’s firefighters are set to receive salary bumps in each of the next three years, according to the terms of a new contract.

Village council members voted 5-1 on Aug. 5 to approve the agreement, which stipulates base salary raises of 3 percent this year, 2 percent in 2015, and 1 percent in 2016.

The firefighters’ union ratified the contract on July 24 by an overwhelming majority, according to union President Rob Pekelder. The union represents 70 full-time firefighters, paramedics, engineers, lieutenants, captains and the director of emergency medical services.

The percentage increases apply across the same experience levels. For example, a starting firefighter/paramedic will receive a salary of $65,701, a 3 percent increase from last year’s pay of $63,787. That rate will increase to $67,685 in 2016, according to contract documents. But actual percentage increases for employees will be significantly higher as they progress through steps in accordance with their years of service. There are seven steps, for those hired after May 1, 2011. So a firefighter/paramedic with two years of experience, for example, will be paid $73,439 this year and $79,196 in 2015, a 7.8 percent raise. A firefighter now with four years experience with the village, for example, will earn $81,717 this year, up from $79,337. A firefighter/paramedic with four years of service will earn $86,621 up from $84,098.

All union members who reach the end of the set salary ranges will be eligible for one-time bonuses between $750 and $1,500 during the life of the contract, depending on their level of experience. Union members are prohibited from endorsing or participating in any type of strike, the contract states.

Commissioner Bob Barnett, who voted no … refused to endorse this contract, mirroring his opposition to other collective bargaining agreements for police officers, emergency dispatchers and public works employees over the past two years. “Once again, we’ve put into our contract conditions that commit our residents to pay for pay increases with no recourse if the economy tanks,” Barnett said. “Basically our only way out of this would be to fire people.”

The contract is backdated to May, so the 3 percent raise union members would have received over the past three months will provided in lump sums in an upcoming paycheck, Baker said. Subsequent raises will go into effect in May of each year.

Downers Grove adds bike medics

The Daily Herald has an article about new bike medics in Downers Grove

Seventeen years after first using bicycles to reach areas where ambulances can’t go, the Downers Grove Fire Department is bolstering its Emergency Medical Services Bike Medic program.

More parades, races and festivals are using the bike medic team, which provides support for heavily attended events that require a highly mobile emergency response. So the department recently added five people, bringing the total number of team members to about a dozen.

Earlier this month, … the new members [participated in] an International Police Mountain Bike Association EMS cyclist class. The 32-hour course covered topics such as bike repair, emergency stopping and slow-speed maneuvering.

When Downers Grove started its program in 1997, it was one of the first departments in Illinois to deploy a team of two paramedics on bicycles. The bicycles, which carry about 30 pounds of equipment and medications, allow the paramedics to get through large crowds quickly and administer care, officials said.

All of Downers Grove’s bike medics are certified paramedics. They provide basic first aid up to advanced life support before an ambulance arrives. The department owns four bikes, which are equipped with advanced life support equipment. Two are used for primary response and two are kept in reserve.

For years, Downers Grove’s bike medic teams were regularly used at festivals, parades and 5K runs. One reason for the program’s longevity is it allows firefighters to interact with the public.

Westmont FD dispatch moves to Downers Grove

Chris Ranck forwarded this dialog from Carma Chicago:

On Aug 7, 2013, at 2:46 PM, “ed245026” wrote:
I noticed that Westmont FD today has been on Downers Grove fire channel of 155.7075 and not dispatching on 153.635, can anybody confirm?

Yes, it went effective yesterday at noon. Since Westmont Police & Fire are dispatched by the Downers Grove Village Operations Center (VOC), they transitioned to the DGFD Fire repeater system.

The old 153.635 repeater system that Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Tri-State (“all belted”), and Willow Springs FD’s will only be used as a back-up for Westmont & DG FD’s.

Area updates from CARMA Chicago

From Chris Ranck:

Received credible information that Downers Grove Fire Department is going to Starcomm TG FDSCENT1 as of 5-15-13 at 7am for portables only.
Rig radios still are VHF. Also Westmont Fire will be using it too soon. on the same talkgroup.

(Dave Weaver) posted many behind the scenes photos and videos from the Chicago Fire set including closeups of the Motorola gear on the “Watch Tower” which is the name for the firehouse desk with the computer terminal and portables. NBC actually had a complete replica of CFD Engine 18’s house recreated in a large film studio complex near Mt. Sinai Hospital on the old Ryerson Steel property. There is an antique radio on the bookshelf in Fire Chief Boden’s office which is actually a Simpson marine radio.
