Cary FPD orders new squad

Cary Fire has placed an order for a new squad.  The new squad will be a SVI body on a Sutphen Ambassador chassis.  Included are preliminary drawings for the new squad.  The drawings state the chassis is a Sutphen Monarch but that was changed to the Ambassador chassis.  If all goes well the new squad should be here in late summer or early fall 2014.  The new unit will replace our current Squad 255 which is a 1991 Alexis Body on a L8000 Ford chassis.  As I get updates I will send them to you.

2nd Alarm Fire plus Haz Mat Box Alarm in Cary 3-6-13

An explosion occurred in Cary at 640 Industrial Drive Wednesday.

This is from the Chicago Tribune:

Three people were injured this afternoon after several explosions at a paint manufacturing warehouse in northwest suburban Cary, officials said.

Cary police and firefighters were called to the Fox Valley Services, 640 Industrial Drive, at about 1:15 p.m. after a report of an explosion, said Cary Police Chief Steven Casstevens. The fire was struck out at about 5 p.m., he said.

When emergency crews arrived a second explosion occurred in the 2-story warehouse building, said Casstevens. The combination of the two explosions caused the front of the brick structure to be blown off, he said. The explosions also caused a small hole at the rear of the building, he said.

Three workers at the facility were taken to area hospitals for treatment, Casstevens said. Their conditions were not immediately available but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.

A hazerdous materials response was called the building as a was a unit that dispenses foam to put out the fire at the paint manufacturing facility, he said.

Jim Hursh said sometime around 1 p.m. he heard an explosion come from Fox Valley Services, 640 Industrial Drive, located about a block from his own business, Whitey’s Crane Rentals.

“We walked up to the door (and) holy crap there was … major smoke coming out of the building,” Hursh said.

He then heard a second explosion. Within moments, Hursh saw several fire trucks and ambulances arrive and at least one man who appeared to have been burned on his face.

Veath said two of the three employees injured in the fire were transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, and one was flown by helicopter from Good Shepherd to a burn center. There were no injuries to firefighters, he noted.

More from Scott Peterson:

Several pics of the Cary 2nd alarm & Hazmat Box about 15 mins after FD first arrived on scene. Unfortunately I had to leave and I guess things got real interesting after that point.  This front wall is at one end of the bldg, and looking at Google Maps, looks like almost a seperate bldg attached to the main one. This front wall about 1/2 of the height was blown out the entire length. There was also explosion damage in the rear which had the CN&W RR tracks and Rt 14 (NW Hwy) in back of. In front are Flammable tanks that co’s where greatly concerned about having an incident with them. They had 2-3 large handlines led out as well as their tower ladder flowing. As I was leaving the Algonquin Tower ladder was moved up and used. Channel’s 5 & 7 have some good aerial video. Pics where quick as the entire area was being evacuated for about 2 blocks due to the hazards.

New tender for Cary FPD

This from Michael Douglass, Lieutenant / Public Education & Information Officer , Cary Fire Protection District

I have some photos of our new tender to update the Chicago Area Fire website.  The tender is numbered 270 and runs out of our station #2.  Tender 270 has a Kenworth model T370 chassis with a 3,000-gallon water tank and a 500-gallon-per-minute pump.  One of the other features the new tender has is a rear camera for the driver to be able to watch what’s directly behind it. There one 3,000-gallon port-a-tank which allows us to dump all of the tank water so the tender can leave right away to re-fill. In the past, we had two 2,100-gallon tanks that had to be set up individually and then connected before the entire tank load could be dumped. We have a different configuration for supply hose and the pump panel is located behind a roll-up door in the body. As a result of these changes, less space was needed making the new tender approximately four feet shorter than the old one.  The new tender arrived in mid August and was put into service on August 30th.

Barrington house fire 3-28-12

Barrington house fire 3-28-12 at 23170 Church Road

A fire that began in the garage extended into the house at 23170 N. Church in Barrington. Larry Shapiro photo

The Barrington Fire Department received a call from residents reporting fire in the garage of their home at 23170 N. Church around 9:30PM on Wednesday. When the first unit which was Barrington Engine 363 arrived on the scene, they found a well-involved garage fire attached to the house.

They were followed almost immediately by Lake Zurich Engine 2 who made a u-turn in the dead-end cul-de-sac and laid 400′ of 5-inch supply line to the corner. One of Barrington’s tankers dropped their portable tank and the water supply was established as companies went to work advancing two lines through separate doors of the house. The building was constructed on a hill with one-story in the front and two-stories on the side.

Barrington requested a MABAS Box Alarm later which brought tankers from Wauconda, Fox River Grove, and East Dundee to supplement the two Barrington tankers and Long Grove Tanker 55. Palatine responded with Truck 85 and engines came from Hoffman Estates, Palatine Rural, and Carpentersville. Rolling Meadows filled in for a company that was not able to respond with an ambulance, and Cary Squad 255 was on-scene implementing a light tower for scene lighting. Chief officers came from Long Grove, Wauconda, and Carpentersville.
