The North Maine Fire Protection District received a section of steel from the World Trade Center wreckage and unveiled it on Sunday at a memorial service commemorating the 10th anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks to date on US soil. The Village of Buffalo Grove, the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band, and the Buffalo Grove Arts Commission had a public concert to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the devastating attacks that occurred on 9/11/01 in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. They invited several guest speakers and asked the Buffalo Grove Fire and Police Department Honor Guard to take part in the event. In between songs played by the band, there was mention of the attacks by Congressman Robert Dold and a US Army General who began his remarks saying that the events of 9/11 were a tragic accident.
Fortunately, the honor guard was present along with a bagpiper to remind those in attendance of the sacrifice and significance of the first responders and those that were killed. The fire department also incorporated a bell ringing ceremony which included Amazing Grace played by a member of the Chicago Highlanders Pipe Band and Drum Band.

The Park Ridge Fire and Police Departments had a memorial ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on Sunday, September 11, 2011. The event took place at Maine West High School on the corner of Dempster and Potter. There were several speakers on the agenda as well as the arrival of an artifact from the World Trade Center that was given to the city. The Chicago Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band along with the police and fire department honor guard escorted the steel beam into the ceremony. The artifact was in the bed of Park Ridge Engine 35 covered with an American flag and was treated in a manner to honor those who were killed that day. John Tobin, a firefighter in Elgin, was one of many local area firefighters who went to New York after the 9/11 attacks to dig through the rubble searching for the remains of those who perished. Some time ago, after he found an FDNY ladder in a junkyard in Wisconsin, he decided to create a keepsake for the Queens company (Ladder 125) that had used that rig. The Daily Herald has a story HERE about the project with several photos.
When Elgin firefighter John Tobin noticed an old New York Fire Department firetruck sitting in a junkyard in New London, Wis., he knew he could transform it into something special.
For the past few months — with help from friends, local companies and fellow firefighters — Tobin has restored the front section (known as the “nose”) of the firetruck.
He had it professionally repainted, got its lights and siren to work again, and made it into a special keepsake for the New York Fire Department firehouse in Queens where it had been used.
New York firefighter Louis Nicolisi, who works in the Queens firehouse where Tobin’s project is headed, said they plan to use it as a display piece in the TV room, next to other historic items they’ve collected over the years.
“The guys are excited that some of our history is coming back,” Nicolisi said. “It’s fabulous what John’s done. He’s definitely a man with a big heart. As we get farther and farther away from 9/11, it’s a touching thing to see that another brother, halfway across the country, thinks about us enough to remember everyone who lost their lives on 9/11.”
A reader sent this link to an article about FDNY Rescue 4 making an appearance Tuesday at the Northwestern University football practice field.
The article is from ESPN Chicago:
The rig had been boarded by eight New York City firefighters from the FDNY Rescue 4 unit on Sept. 11, 2001, and all eight died that day while trying to save people at the World Trade Center. The truck withstood damages and was the only operating rescue rig during the days following 9/11.
On Tuesday, the truck rolled up onto Northwestern’s practice field as a kickoff point for the Remembrance Rescue Project. Headed by Skokie firefighter Chris Gantz and other Chicago-area firefighters, the Remembrance Rescue Project is a non-profit organization that uses the historic rig as an educational tool to teach children about 9/11 and raises money for children of fallen firefighters.
The truck will also be present at Northwestern’s home opener against Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
Karl Klotz visited Denny G’s Automotive Repair in Des Plaines and took several shots showing the current state of X-FDNY Rescue 4. Evidently, they are working around the clock to meet deadlines to show the rig next week on 9/11/11. Previous posts about this rig can be found HERE, HERE, and HERE which includes a photo showing what the rescue looked like a week ago.
