This from Mike Summa:
Hello,This is Alsip’s 1965? ALF pumper. Unknown specs. What I do like about it is the light on the roof. Didn’t Chicago have lights like this? What was the name of this light unit? Enjoy, and comment if you’d like.–Mike Summa

There’s just something about those ALF’s.
This handsome example is no exception. The only thing lacking is the traditional Q siren unless it was rehabbed at some point.

Blue Island had 4 ALF engines, along with the ladder. Dixmoor and South Chicago Heights both had a pair of engines. South Holland had 4 engines and a 90′ Aero Chief. Lansing had 2 engines, but both were gone by the time I started. Thornton had an engine on a Ford chassis, which was there wheh I started in 1972.

I remember their other similar ALF engine 2023. These rigs were very popular at one time in the southern suburbs as Cal Park, Blue Island, Alsip, Palos Heights, Orland, Lemont and Joliet had several each.

I believe this rig originally had a red beacon light and the aurora borealis was added later. The CFD mounted the aurora borealis a little further back on the cab. My guess is they placed it where the beacon light used to be.

That’s one of two ALF engines that Alsip had. In the background, looks like their former Sutphen aerial tower 2004.

The bases came painted silver/gray as shown, black, which were predominant on the cadillac ambos, but on the chief’s buggys the base was chrome.
