North Riverside considers privatizing FD (more)

CBS Chicago has an article on the move by North Riverside officials to privatize the fire department:

An attorney for a suburban firefighters union said they will continue their fight against an attempt by the village of North Riverside to privatize its fire department.

… North Riverside officials have asked a Cook County judge to allow accelerated filings and make a summary judgment in their lawsuit to privatize the village’s firefighting operationsThe village has said its contract with its firefighters has expired, and they want to speed up their privatization effort to save $750,000 on pension payments next year.

However, J. Dale Berry, the attorney for North Riverside Firefighters Union Local 2714, said the court has given the union the customary 30 days to respond to the village’s lawsuit. The union wants to resolve the dispute through arbitration, and has accused the village of bargaining in bad faith. Berry said the contract allowed for arbitration after the contract expired.

“Essentially what the city is trying to do here – it’s very, actually very radical, unprecedented type of claim – they’re essentially trying to terminate a contract that isn’t terminated by its own terms, and they’re trying to bypass the dispute resolution process,” he said.

The village has denied bad-faith bargaining, and argued it cannot afford to pay the pensions of the unionized firefighters, and has offered them jobs with the private company that would run firefighting operations.

Police and fire in Lincolnshire host charity cook-off

The Daily Herald has an article about a charity cook-off in Lincolnshire.

Lincolnshire’s police officers and firefighters will trade their guns and hoses for spatulas and tongs this weekend to help a Lake County girl fighting cancer.

Crews from the Lincolnshire Police Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District will host a charity cook-off on Sept. 27 at village hall, 1 Olde Half Day Road. The barbecue showdown is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu will consist of ribs, pulled pork and beef brisket.

“Firemen are often known to be good cooks,” said Lincolnshire Police Officer Brian Balinski, one of the event’s organizers. “The Lincolnshire Police Department has a few officers who are passionate about cooking as well. We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to put our skills to the test.”

Fire Chief Fred Krueger is confident his department will prevail. “We’re known as great cooks and they’re known as great eaters,” Krueger said. “They’re really outmatched.”

The beneficiary is 6-year-old Ava Lee, who was diagnosed with a rare type of leukemia this past February. Ava, whose family lives near Lincolnshire, needs a bone-marrow transplant so her body can produce healthy blood cells. But doctors haven’t yet found a donor whose marrow matches hers.

“Our No. 1 goal is to find a bone marrow donor match for Ava,” Balinski said. “We’ve been trying to put on a blood drive together for the last couple of years, and Ava’s story has given us the perfect chance to go above and beyond the initial blood drive we hoped (to) plan.”

Getting tested to be a marrow donor requires a simple interior cheek swab. But it’s an expensive process, and that can scare off potential donors, Balinski said. So, to raise the money needed for anyone to get tested and register with the National Marrow Donor Program’s Be The Match effort at the event, the cooks will sell samples of their culinary creations.

None of Ava’s family members match her, though, so a stranger’s marrow is needed.

A first-grader at Pritchett Elementary School in Buffalo Grove, Ava’s illness was discovered after going to the doctor because of a persistent skin infection, said her mother, Esther Lee. Ava has been receiving chemotherapy treatments for seven months. Because a bone-marrow match has not yet been found, the next step would be an umbilical-cord blood transplant.

“We’re hoping to have 40 blood donors from this event,” Balinski said. “Hopefully this event will tug on the hearts of those who attend.”

Esther Lee said she and her husband, Michael, are “honored and humbled” by the community’s support.

A historical review …

From Steve Redick:

I cranked up the wayback machine for a long overdue session….Here’s a shot I believe I may have gotten from Chuck Madderom. A very rare image of the famous Snorkel Squad 3 operating with a Snorkel. I have no info on this location or date, but I LOVE this shot. This is the same rig, the original Snorkel, that was restored by ALF back in the 90’s. As many of you already know my dad was the captain of this company, and I did ride on one of the foam pressures a coupla times when I lived on Erie Street. That house is now gone too.

Here’s a good old fire fan photo. A still alarm 59th & Lafayette or Lasalle maybe even Perry … not sure now … mid 70’s … fire venting out the side and a truckman holding the door shut after forcing it while the engine leads out. My dad is visible in the white helmet on the right side of the photo. I rode in the 12th battalion buggy to this job. Typical fire in the old 12th battalion in those days.

Don’t remember the date for this next one, but I was coming home from some tavern and took this in. Probably about 0300 or so, I’m thinking the late 80s. This was a pretty well known restaurant if I remember right..can anyone add more info?

Let’s look at one more. Detroit lost 3 members in a major warehouse fire back in March 1987. This cartoon appeared in the paper the next day. I thought so much of it I bought a lithograph of it from the paper. This has always been a touching image for me.
