Gary Fire Department history

This from Wayne Stuart for #TBT:

The Gary Fire Department operated two of these 1970 American LaFrance 900 series ladders. They had 100′ ladders and  200 gallon booster tanks. This one carried ALF serial # 2-1-2323 and was assigned to Truck Co. 2. These photos are pre and post rehab in 1982. It was rather unique because the cab roof was cut out to lower the overall height of the rig to accommodate the low door height of the apparatus bay. It was one of the few Gary apparatus that remained in it’s original assignment for the majority of its career.

The Gary Fire Department operated this 1977 Mack CF685 model, Serial #CFA1852. It had a Thibault 100′ ladder and a 300 Gallon booster tank. It was originally built for Washington Township FD in Marion County Indiana, however the deal fell thru and the GFD purchased it. It was assigned to Truck Co.1, and later on to Truck Co.4. It served many years until the top fly of the ladder failed at an extra alarm fire. The FD shops removed the damaged top fly section and it ran for a few more years as a 75′ ladder.

more from Wayne Stuart:

Gentlemen just ask and you may receive,  I just so happen to have a couple of photos of the Snorkel at work. Photos of it working were pretty rare back in those days. It originally ran as the downtown Truck Company out of Station 1. The first fire was at 10th & Broadway in the late 60’s, not sure where the second fire took place, may have been on Washington St. in the 500 block in the same era.The third photo was it’s last resting place, again not sure of the location.
