Here are several shots from a 3-11 Alarm fire and EMS Plan 1 at 4344 N Winchester that occurred on 12/6/01. Featured are older apparatus, many of which were new at the time and are now gone or in reserve status. One shot features all three LTI tower ladders in near mint condition. Gary Fire Department history (more)

more from Wayne Stuart:

Gentlemen just ask and you may receive,  I just so happen to have a couple of photos of the Snorkel at work. Photos of it working were pretty rare back in those days. It originally ran as the downtown Truck Company out of Station 1. The first fire was at 10th & Broadway in the late 60’s, not sure where the second fire took place, may have been on Washington St. in the 500 block in the same era.The third photo was it’s last resting place, again not sure of the location.

Historic 5-11 Alarm plane crash in Chicago, 11-24-59

This from Eric Haak:

The following images are from the morning of November 24, 1959. TWA flight 595 experienced trouble on take off and attempted to return to Midway Airport. According to the official crash report, the pilot’s actions caused the Super Constellation to “gain an excessive rate of sink” on approach and it slammed into residences around 64th and Knox just after 5:30am (CFD records I have seen have the still time as 0524). The Chicago Fire Department’s response to this incident would eventually be raised to a 5-11. All 3 occupants of the cargo plane and 8 on the ground were killed. Firefighters working the fireground include members wearing helmets from Engines 127, 88, 97, 53, Squads 12 and 3 as well as Trucks 42 and 16. Also, Commissioner Quinn is shown standing amongst the rubble with his driver and a Chief Fire Marshall.

5-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-26-72

This from Eric Haak:

Just after 6:00pm Saturday evening, February 26, 1972. The address was 2825 N. Central Avenue with a fire in the 2-story Polk Brothers carpet store. It would be elevated to a 5-11 before the work was done. Tremendous smoke conditions as you would expect with that fire load. I thought the CTA bus image was interesting as customer’s faces can be seen peering out the windows. No way they would allow passengers to stay on the bus today.

The final image was an addition to last week’s post as I found this one after I submitted the others. Since there was discussion on the buggies in the last post, I figured I would send this in as it shows a different view of both the 1956 Chevrolet and the 1961 Ford. Enjoy!
